#LeaveNoQuestionUnanswered #LOSTexplained
The twenty-first chapter in a series of LOST EXPLAINED videos that investigate the mythology and mysteries from the seminal television series LOST. These definitive explanations are based on multiple viewings of the show over the years and careful studying of the details, clues, inconsistencies and contradictions that make up the complex tapestry of what is the greatest television show from the 2000s.
Chapter Twenty-One untangles the nature of the candidates and what exactly that means. How does Jacob select his candidates? How does the lighthouse factor on? In fact, how the hell does the lighthouse even work? Are the candidates predestined? Does Jacob have a choice in whom he chooses? What was the deal with the cave of names, and why have two lists? Why were the candidates numbered? All these questions, and more, are finally answered.
This chapter is a direct follow-up to Chapter 20, which discussed the nature of "the rules". If you haven't seen it, I suggest you check it out.

I rewatched the scene where Jacob reveals why he selected the candidates. While he initially states why he selected them, he does go on to make a statement that backs up your thesis here. He tells them that he selected them because they needed the Island as much as the Island needed them. While he's not denying that he needed them the word choice is deliberate there. The Lighthouse showed Jacob who the Island needed and he chose from there, although obviously his will and the island are as one to a degree.

This is a really good explanation. I just finished a rewatch of the series and the details of how the lighthouse was used was one of the biggest mysteries to me. Having said that, I wish we could have seen Jacob using this play out would have been very entertaining. Also it’s a very powerful device and we only get one scene with it, which is disappointing. More of Jacob’s struggle to find his replacement would have made him more interesting to me.

I can't imagine any other explanation of how the lighthouse works than this one. It never made sense to me before. How else could he find suitable candidates without the Island aiding him somehow? Watch billions of random people until he found someone appropriate? Also the cog like mechanism of the lighthouse reminded me of the wheel that turns the Island and teleports people through time and space. One channels water and light (the wheel) the other uses light and possibly fire (lighthouse).

One big thing I always struggled with The Candidates idea is that they were supposed to be invaluable and protected. And yet we see countless times how members of The Others attack them both physically and mentally and kill them without regard for their so-called immunity. Jacob is supposed to be the one keeping The Others in check, and yet this feels inconsistent with their actions. Ben and The Others just seem to use and abuse The Candidates at their will without regard for this supposed higher purpose.

Jacob came to her sometime in the mid to late 1980s. But Kate had already been on the island as a time travelling adult about a decade prior in 1977. Jacob knows this. He is fulfilling The Island's tapestry of time by selecting her as a candidate. Just like everyone else, Jacob is a slave to the time loop. The only difference is, he knows it.

Hi again. Great video. Two in two days. You're spoiling us! ;) The one point I want to make that you may or may not agree with (you didn't mention it so I suspect you won't agree), is that I believe the Lighthouse, rather like the Source, is a sacred place that can only be detected by Jacob himself (or any subsequent Protector), or anyone who Jacob "allows" to see it, which is why Jack and Hurley seemed so amazed that they'd never noticed it before. It appears to be above the beach in an area between the survivors camp and the Looking Glass, so plenty of LOSTies had walked that route. It's not specifically stated, but I feel like it's implied. Thoughts?
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 3 жыл бұрын
I don't necessarily disagree with this idea. If Jacob (or any protector) could somehow keep people from coming across the cave of light then it is perfectly reasonable to assume that he could do the same with other sacred locations. But then why isn't this the case with the Temple? That was also a sacred place. I suppose we could make the argument that people only found it when they needed to. Personally, I always just accepted the fact that our Losties simply never came across the Lighthouse before. The Island was a very large place with lots of hidden nooks and crannies, and it is plausible that our Oceanic 815ers had only spent a few months in total there and had simply not explored every area. The Others were no doubt aware of its existence, just like they were with other so-called "ruins". DHARMA is less likely to have been aware of it, so therefore Sawyer's group would also not know about it. DHARMA were restricted by the truce with the natives on where they could explore and any sacred historical sites were probably off-limits. To me, it's plausible that our main characters never came across it. Although one wonders... had Sayid managed to avoid Rousseau's trap and successfully map the island in S1, just imagine what he would have found on his travels! Including the four-toed statue, the ferry dock, Hydra Island, etc.

@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 - it's definitely open to interpretation, but I feel like that episode (Lighthouse) went out of its way to imply that the Lighthouse should've been seen previously by the survivors. Firstly, the route that Jack and Hurley walked went past the cave, which suggests they're approximately in the corner of the Island where the main camp was, and also Jack expresses real surprise that none of them had previously spotted the Lighthouse - "How is it that we've never seen it before?". Those two things together convey the idea that it should have been seen, and it would've been relatively easy for the creators to stick the Lighthouse far from the Survivors camp to explain why it had stayed hidden. But it's probably not crucial to the plot - just something that makes sense to me.
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 3 жыл бұрын
@@drewc.4061 Yes, that is true. It does feel implied by the comments that Jack and Hurley make, and the geography of the location being so close to familiar territory. I don't know if I subscribe to it fully, but it's totally possible within the logic of the show.

@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 - related to the video, but a change of subject. If we accept the idea, proposed by you here, that Jacob "touched" Hurley very late in order that Hugo could "fly under the MIB's radar", does that provide the kiss of death to the theory that "Dave" on the Island was the MIB trying to kill Hugo? After all, if the MIB didn't view Hugo as a candidate, he would have simply tried to kill him directly, Eko style. And if he found that he was not allowed to kill him that way, he would've figured out Hugo's true nature as a candidate. I've never thought that Dave was the MIB anyway, but it remains quite a popular idea throughout the LOST fandom. Thoughts?
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 3 жыл бұрын
@@drewc.4061 Hmm, I don't know if it cancels that idea out entirely. It is alluded to that the Man in Black has been watching the Oceanic 815ers from the jungle, perhaps in various guises and forms. I am of the school of thought that believes MiB was Sawyer's boar, which means he could have also possibly been Kate's horse, Hurley's bird, and even Mikhail's cat. It would have been a way to observe and study candidates as well as size up who might be useful and who might be a threat, etc. Therefore, he could have observed Hurley and viewed him as an easy target. If Hurley killed himself, that would have delivered a crushing blow to the morale of the camp in a way other deaths would not have. Sure, slaughtering Hurley would be easy, but the idea that the most positive, optimistic member of these survivors commits suicide is soul crushing. That said, Dave is intentionally an ambiguous apparition. And I think you can absolutely take him simply as Hurley's guilty subconscious manifesting itself. That makes sense to me too and is certainly a cleaner explanation. The same ambiguity surrounds Emily Linus' appearances. She could well be the Man in Black (although we have to theory craft in order to explain away the logistics of that) but the most likely option is that she really is the ghost of Emily. I like to leave these appearances as open to being either/or because it enriches repeat viewings. I flip-flop between possibilities. Even Kate's horse, which I mostly believe to just be a horse, sometimes makes me question its legitimacy. These ambiguous appearances by creatures great and small can be appropriated as part of the MiB mythology, or simply seen on their own terms.

He would be able to leave the island before he became smoke monster, but Mother stops him and destroys his progress in finding a way out and destroys the village. After he kills Mother and Jacob revenges, he is pushed into the source and turned to smoke monster. After that it is essential that he remains on the island for the entire existence of the world. @LOST EXPLAINED I always felt like the reason for Jacob's interference in these particular candidates' lives at those particular moments - rather than Jacob's need, decision, or tendency to "activate" them, as you put it - was due to how far they would manage to go through their lives before he needed to set them on their paths towards the Island. I loved the irony that both Kate and James, both very similar people, had to be put on track quite early in their lives while Hugo would only need that nudge like 20 days before the oncoming end of the world. Maybe I'm taking Jacob's "I guess it just needed a little push" line to Jack or the Monster's speech to James way too literally. And yes, I call him "the Monster" - dude was badass.

I didn’t think to put two and two together that Jacob started watching the Oceanic Candidates a long time because of them jumping through time on the Island. Have you done a complete dissection of the Blast Door Map yet. The part that sort of confused me about the map is the CV “Cerberus Vent” is the tunnels underneath the Island where the Smoke Monster travel around. Did the Egyptians build all the ancient tunnel the statue and the Temple to include room beneath the Temple? I have so many questions.

That's an interesting suggestion to do a video on the Blast Door Map. I had never really considered going in-depth on that. I'll have a think about it to see if I have any fresh insights worth sharing. As for the underground tunnels, I will be touching upon this in my chapter on the Egyptians in a couple of weeks. I don't think that Kate being crossed out was just MiBs's poor judgement. Kate asks Jacob "Why did YOU cross my name of the wall?" and Jacob gives her a straight answer. It might also indicate that it was Jacob's cave as well but I think it was probably MiBs and he just copied for himself what was in the Lighthouse. I don't see why Jacob would need two outposts.
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 2 жыл бұрын
While it remains open to speculation as to whether or not the cave was Jacob or MiB's place, the list would have mirrored the Lighthouse list either way including which names were crossed off and which were not. It is the exact same list copied from the Lighthouse. Jacob's reason for crossing off Kate's name was not really about her being a mother. We know this because it did not prevent Sun and Jin from being crossed off the list, even though they had recently become parents too. Once someone is a candidate, they are a candidate until they either die or someone else accepts the position. Jacob says: "It's just a line of chalk on a wall. The job is yours if you want it, Kate." Which means Kate was still a candidate regardless of her name being crossed off. Which leads me to believe that the real reason why Jacob crossed off Kate's name was to throw off the Man in Black. Consider this. If Jacob has two lists -- the lighthouse and the cave -- then perhaps the Man in Black was *supposed* to find the cave. Jacob wanted him to keep track of the candidates in any case. When MiB saw Kate's name crossed out on the dial/wall that set him at ease about Kate's importance. He could use her to draw the other candidates in but she wasn't a threat to him anymore. However, what do we know about Kate's destiny that made her so important in the endgame? She is the one who delivers the fatal shot to the Man in Black in 'The End'. Her name being crossed off meant that MiB never saw her coming. Jacob sensed this and concealed her MVP status.

Several videos have been inspired from conversations I have had on here. @sandal_thong8631
@sandal_thong8631 Жыл бұрын
Yes, I don't like determinism for everyone too. Clearly there has to be rules, like Pierre Chang said, but could there be a couple people who have awareness outside the time loop? We saw Desmond and Eloise are outside of the normal rules of time, perhaps Jacob and MiB are too? That is, MiB conceives the idea of a time loop, and goes to a lot of trouble to make sure it happens, which Jacob allows. But then they are both caught up in it, and have to play their parts. I'm thinking of the compass not having a beginning or ending, because it just cycles through, perhaps getting a little more beat up each time, but it must have had an origin outside it? So it's possible Jacob and MiB have some awareness of "before" the latter set things in motion?

Just discovered your channel and currently rewatching the show. I love your content so much and thank you for making these!!! So with your extensive knowledge of the lore of the candidates, who do YOU think candidate 42- KWON was referencing? Sun, Jin, Ji Yeon? Before this video, I thought it was Sun. After.. I’m leaning towards Ji Yeon because of your recognition that the candidates were lonely lost individuals and Ji Yeon being an orphan raised by Sun’s parents fits that bill.
@LOSTEXPLAINED108

Well, we see Jacob touch both Sun *and* Jin, and it follows Jin telling Sun that being apart from her would be like the earth being apart from the sky. In other words, their bond is so deep that he sees them as being one. Hence, why when she dies, he dies with her. Jacob touched them both to act as a *unit*. The idea that Ji Yeon was the true candidate means that she would have been drawn back to the Island as a result (possibly coming with her mother) because all the final candidates were drawn back for the endgame, including Locke. In 'What They Died For', Kate directly asks Jacob: "Sun and Jin Kwon and Sayid Jarrah, you wrote their names on the wall?" And Jacob responds: "Yes."

1. There are clear hieroglyphs in the Lighthouse, and on many of the old structures (like the temple, summoning chamber, underground tunnels, etc). I am making a video that will explain the Egyptians in full. Should be released in a couple of weeks. I keep having debates with people about the chronology of the Egyptians (and what they built) and I felt like there is a definitive, knowable timeline presented in the show in drips and drabs, but it takes elaborate explanation. So, hopefully the video will cover this ground for you as well. 2. I had a conversation just the other day with a very smart subscriber (Drew C.) who posited the theory that the lighthouse was kept hidden from people in the same way the cave of light was kept hidden from people. The Protector was shown to have a power like this, so it is a solid theory. Here's what I said on the matter: Personally, I always just accepted the fact that our Losties simply never came across the Lighthouse before. The Island was a very large place with lots of hidden nooks and crannies, and it is plausible that our Oceanic 815ers had only spent a few months in total there and had simply not explored every area. According to screen grabs from the show (and Lostpedia), the name at 108 was "Wallace". A character and candidate that we never met. Jack and Hurley likely would not have seen anything at 108 because the mirrors only reflected active/alive candidates. Notice how the mirrors were normal when passing over dead candidate names, because the link between them and the island had been broken in death. Jacob gave Hurley the instructions to start at 108 knowing that Jack would look for his own name on the dial. Jacob didn't need to tell them exactly what to do, only give them a push towards figuring it out for themselves. And they did.

Though MiB might not have visited the lighthouse, he could have figured out there were 360 numbers, and might have noticed if 108 was missing. It looked like they got everyone who left the island to come back on Ajira 316, but Walt didn't make it, because Locke didn't want to bring the kid back; "the boy's been through a lot." Supposedly, not getting everyone upset their return, but determinism for the time loop says, what happened was meant to happen, and I'm about to stop caring again.

@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 I like the idea that it guides him to where he needs to teleport, since the outside world is a lot larger than the island, where MiB teleports around. But I don't think it's necessary for him to use it, though we can't be sure since we haven't seen him in action, like appearing outside someone's home in the mirror then returning to the island from that point.

The Island influences events and people's paths, and Jacob serves its will. Most of the time he stays out of the way, but sometimes he directly interjects and tells someone what they need to do (as with Hurley on several occasions) and other times he sets up the circumstances in which certain outcomes will be achieved (by getting The Others to build the runway on Hydra Island in 2004 so Ajira can land on it in 2007). He's like Santa's Little Helper lol.

in season 3 episode 1, who said ''let it go jack'', through that communication thing on the wall?
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 3 жыл бұрын
The most likely answer is that the voice on the intercom was the real Christian Shepherd breaking through to Jack from The Source. We know ghosts can communicate to the living through various mediums. Jack is shown to have psychic sensitivity because he is a predestined island protector. We see this demonstrated again in S4 when he literally sees the ghost of his father at the hospital. But Jack chooses to write off his feelings and visions as hallucinations and psychosis, so he self-medicates to suppress the power.

Well the island is a volcanic formation with peaks and valleys of all kinds. The beach leads into jungle and the jungle can lead to hills and valleys. I’ll admit that the geography of locations on the show is often spotty and unclear but this particular one didn’t bother me too much. I understand that certain aspects of the show don’t always cohere as a result of continuity and production issues. We have to suspend our disbelief in some cases.

Here's some info from p 219 of the official Lost Encyclopaedia entry for the Lighthouse that might or might not help you with your Egyptian video. "...In ancient times the structure (the Lighthouse) was erected as a protective measure, possibly in tandem with the Taweret statue. Egyptians considered fire a protective element that was used to ward off evil and both structures were perched in such a way as to warn off outsiders. It contains an ancient telescope. .The Lighthouse room is dominated by a horizontal wooden wheel and a large inset brazier bowl that held fire that could be reflected in the mirrors..Brazier is a word of Egyptian origin (khet) for a portable grill used to burn items in funeral rituals . Hieroglyphs often used an image of a brazier to depict fire or a flame like the Egyptian illustration of the Lake of Fire in the Underworld.

Thanks for sharing. I have actually completed the video already. Lost Encyclopaedia is a tough one for me. On the one hand, it makes some good deductions and clarifies plot details in a coherent way. On the other hand, it gets some really basic details wrong and makes suppositions that I don't agree with at all. It's a controversial book in the fandom for its errors, and I haven't lifted any information from it because I don't consider it a reliable source, especially when it theory crafts the history of things like this. I disagree with their take on this issue anyway. The Lighthouse was built by the Egyptians originally, by all appearances, to simply be a lighthouse. The brazier bowl was their version of a light to signal ships. It wasn't to warn off other ships or travellers. That's not what a lighthouse does. It was to help bring others to the island, which we know is something that Jacob wanted. The compass dial and the mirrors aren't as old as the lighthouse structure, and the dial's engineering is definitely closer to that of 19th century invention. So, my reading of the lighthouse is at odds with the Encyclopaedia's entry in these ways. The compass dial was installed at a very specific point in time. Jacob was not searching for literal replacements until after 1867 (Richard's arrival). But I shall get into that more in the video. I appreciate you sharing with me relevant sources all the same! Much appreciated :)

I never assumed the island was giving Jacob instructions using the lighthouse I always thought, well, hes Jacob. He's the god like figure, theres no other entity above him telling him what to do. If he has the power to make someone immortal, or the power to bring them to the island by touching them, I would assume he can make a magical lighthouse But if we know one of the sources of power on the island can move you to thought time and space, Jacob probably knows how to control that power (thats why he traveled to the right point in time, he used a similar power to the wheel). And if MIB can't use that power after he became the smoke, it makes sense why he can't leave. If the island is covered with a similar power like a huge glass dome (thats why theres a small time jump when u leaving the island, you going thought that thin protective dome of energy), MIB can't interact with that power, he can't go through it either. Thast why he's trapped and thats why he needs to "turn off" that power before he can leave
@LOSTEXPLAINED108

All of Jacob’s powers come from the light. The light operates independent of him. It literally moves people through time and space without the need for Jacob to do anything. The Island aka The Source is demonstrated to be its own entity and a prime mover of events throughout the series. Jacob was its emissary.

@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 Yes, his powers come from the magical light. We agree on that. Thats why he has connection to that power But everything else I always seen differently. The light itself isn't sentient, those are just pockets of pure unknown energy, most likely different kinds of energies (and different people tries to study it, Egyptians, dharma). U think the pocket of energy in Australia was also sentient? A different kind of god-like creature? or the same one? If the island could move itself on its own, it wouldn't need people to spin the wheel. I always seen "the island" in the same way as the universe when it tries to self current itself (cause whatever happens happens, if u save soemoene, he still gonna die). I always seen it as a natural rule of the universe, something to prevent paradoxes. Same when they get snapped back to their own time, it was just the universe self correcting itself. But your interpretations are also pretty interesting. Even years after the show we still can have cool conversations about it.
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 2 жыл бұрын
All of those pockets are arteries of the same light source. Think of it like a living organism with a heart (the island) and organs (the other energy points around the world) with veins of light connecting them all together. The island does move on its own, remember? The wheel is just the man made way of making it move but the island is always moving across those energy pockets in the ocean. This is confirmed in the show itself. The island is always moving location independent of the wheel. Further to this point about sentience, the island chooses who it will and who it will not heal. It heals Rose’s cancer but not Ben’s. It also brought people to its shore without protectors for a long time. Mother didn’t want anyone on the island, yet the island brought Claudia’s people to her. Same with Richard Alpert. It also communicates with people like Locke and Desmond, guiding them with flashes and visions. And it speaks to characters, giving them an intuition as to what they need to do and where they need to be. Both Jacob and the Man in Black demonstrate this ability several times. We even have characters frequently refer to The Island as its own entity. “Is that what The Island wants?” “The Island wanted me to get sick. And it wanted you to get well.” “The Island needs you.” Over and over again, people refer to the island as a separate entity to Jacob. And the writers themselves even imply this fact in their commentary for ‘Across the Sea’ in which they say: “The Island is alive.” I absolutely agree that we can have lots of cool conversations about the show years later. It’s a testament to how much detail and imagination was put into the mythology. Hence why my channel exists. Still so much to explore and discuss.
