Imagine being a beacon man, on top of a freezing mountain, staring at a big fire. The day they got to burn that pile of wood was probably the best day of their lives.

Until they realise the nearest dry piece of timber was 12 hours away down the legs of a gigantic mountain. Uno reverse card.

a bit late, they prob have another smaller fireplace near that area. just look at guard having a firewood burning near it

I don't see why they wouldn't have a small fire going for the men stationed there, for cooking, drying wood, keeping warm, etc;

The placing of the beacons was ridiculous, I'm sure a more practical placement would've been possible. But...it's still one of my favourite moments of the movie.

That was very brave for a Hobbit to climb up that high, too, since Hobbits are typically afraid of heights. Really, though, that was a long and dangerous climb even for someone not afraid of heights. I saw this movie in the theater and it was MAGNIFICENT!

BJMcB92 mainly the southern alps and fiordland to be fair, which is where this is filmed. Places in the North island like the volcanic plateau and I think east cape a pretty untouched too, but so much of NZ has been turned into farmland. We lost 90% of our forests and 98% of our wetlands :(

NOTE: For even MORE awesomeness, pay attention to the fact that in the middle of the beacon lighting sequence it is NIGHT!! Peter Jackson and crew paid ATTENTION to the detail of TIME and how long such a chain of bonfires would actually take to cross the distance from Gondar to Rohan!! The entire sequence starts during one day, goes on through the night and into the following day!

Seems a bit unrealistic. In the book, there are only 7 beacons, which would be quite sufficient to cover the 150 miles between Rohan and Gondor if placed at sufficiently high positions. That would certainly not take a whole night to relay. Even giving each segment a whole minute, and a much shorter distance between beacons, a night's transmission would still add up to a ridiculously huge total distance. EDIT: Even so, I guess the Rule of Cool overrules.

In my opinion, it goes like this: Someone lit the beacon of light in Minas Tirith, someone close from 2nd beacon see this from his house/town and proceed to send men to climb the mountain and lit the beacon, repeat until the beacon closest to Rohan. The movie is just shortened the process so it wouldn't have more time than what it already was. Edit: spelling

This was possibly the dumbest scene in the whole trilogy. Gandalf was the wielder Of Narya, the ring of fire, and therefore did not need to risk Pippin's life to set a fire that any minor wizard could handle easily. Even PJ and his chicks should know that. DUH!!!

@@marrob6995 Yes. Denethor was one of the few portrayals from book to movie that really bothered me. In the film he's a crazy Scrooge. In the book he's a diminished (but once great) old man who has been driven mad by Sauron. But they simplified his part (probably for time and expediency). I understand why they wrote him as such, but I wish they had not. He was a far more tragic despairing character. Is what it is. I love the films. I love the books. They are different experiences (as is always the case through the two mediums).

This scene was to me a beautiful story of honor and devotion to duty. Each person in their isolated station was faithfully watching for the signal. Every day, every minute, for years and years. All of the flames were lit within seconds of the previous one, showing the honorable devotion to a promise made long before.

The distance conveyed by this is just amazing. And the whole scene is just showing hundreds of people working together for this one very thing. It really shows that the old friendship between Rohan and Gondor is still there. All these people ready for this one moment, always staring, guarding, and watching in case Gondor calls for aid.

This was possibly the dumbest scene in the whole trilogy. Gandalf was the wielder Of Narya, the ring of fire, and therefore did not need to risk Pippin's life to set a fire that any minor wizard could handle easily. Even PJ and his chicks should know that. DUH!!!

Just imagine being on beacon duty at the peaks of those mountains for all that time, staring out into the open endlessly waiting for a fellow beacon to be lit. That has to suck ass, especially considering how far away they are from comfortable civilization and the freezing cold altitude of those mountains....God I over analyze everything

They didn't necessarily live up there, they could've lived in a lower place from which they could've still seen the other beacons, so in case they'd have to lit their beacon, they would've had just to make a climb. Those beacons were not lit in a day.

Cripes, I love this scene - the building music adding to the scene, as the camera continues to pan out to take in each flame. I have so many favourite scenes in this trilogy. This is one of them. It's a definite 'YES!!!' Heroic moment! 'Gondor calls for aid!' Pause..... 'And Rohan will answer'.

Unfortunately I was born in 2007 so the first time I watched lotr was from my uncle's blue ray in 2020. Well this year the trilogy came back in theaters in April as a 20th anniversary for return of the king. Was worth it 1.000%

They don't live on top of the mountains but in a village nearby. And when someone there sees that one of the other beacons has been lit, they send men to climb the mountain to lit "their" beacon. That is why it takes so much time; it starts in the day, continues at night and reaches Edoras the next beginning of the next day.

This was possibly the dumbest scene in the whole trilogy. Gandalf was the wielder Of Narya, the ring of fire, and therefore did not need to risk Pippin's life to set a fire that any minor wizard could handle easily. Even PJ and his chicks should know that. DUH!!!

I can’t describe what it was like to watch this in theaters. This, as well as the charge of the Rohirrim, was the most surreal cinematic experience of my early adulthood. The later matrix movies came out at around the same time and came very close. Back then, this quality of cinema and graphics was simply new and uncommon. Add to that the fact that few movie series had as solid and cohesive writing as this adaptation. I don’t think I have experienced anything like it since. The contrasts in mood of this movie, from the darkest pits of despair to the heights of hope, especially since I was invested across multiple movies and had read the books. I don’t know that anything will ever make me feel this way again.

There's another problem. Some fires are ignited during the night, this implies that the message was delivered in more than a day. We also see that each fire is ignited few seconds after the previous one (*), this implies that there were hundreds of fires, the movie showed only a little number of them and its chain would have been thousands of miles long. (*) Another problem, how could men ignite fires so fast, considering that some of them are exposed to bad wheater, pretty damn hard to reach and there is no near shelter?

In the theater (2003) watching this scene... is one such moment that one could say “I was there”. Gandalf: Hope is kindled! While traveling across the mountain tops of Middle Earth as the beacons are being 🔥 lit and an epic background musical score performing caused the crowd in the theater to stand and cheer. Very few movies are capable of captivating an audience like that.

Gondor already had the beacon's lit though, it wasn't just a call for Rohan. It was a call for all Gondorian's to answer the call to come to Minas Tirith. Which they did, but they were still too few. Like 2 thousand in total. Denethor actually sent a rider to Rohan. Unfortunately he was killed before they knew that Rohan was coming. So the arrival of Rohan was still a big shock.

I love this whole sequence. Everything about it is so beautiful. The scenery, the music and the message that both hope and help might now by a slim chance be on their way. But at the same time both the music and the visuals manage to maintain the idea that this isn't something joyous or uplifting happening. It's still basically an act of desperation. But it's tying into that theme of holding on to that "fool's hope" that people will act as you need them to and you might just have a shot at victory

That music! The strings convey height and movement and the horns complement the grandeur landscape and reinforce how epic the moment is. Howard Shore knocked this sequence out of the park.

It's funny cause in the original lore the beacons had already been lit by the time Gandalf and Pippin arrived at Minas Tirith and they did not stretch all the way to Rohan. The beacons were used to summon all Gondorians in the provinces of Gondor such as Dol Amroth and Lossarnach to the White City. Rohan was summoned differently by a messenger carrying a red arrow.

In the book, it is Denethor who gives the command for the beacons to be lit and Gandalf and Pippin see some of them burning as they are riding to Minas Tirith. Denethor also sends a messenger to Edoras after that. The change made by Peter Jackson though about a depressed Denethor not caring and the beacons being lit by Pippin and Gandalf instead, works beautifully for the film. It gives this moment immense weight. And Howard Shore’s music just elevates this sequence to the upper echelons of cinematic epicness.

I’ve just returned from a 7 day ski holiday to Queenstown, NZ. The snow capped mountain peaks are among the most majestic things I’ve ever seen. You could really imagine Wizards, Balrogs and Bonfires existing there. So much of the genius of these films are the exquisite location choices. (note- QT is on the South Island, filming for LOTR took place on the North island. But visuals very comparable).

Fun fact: In 1854, during the Crimean war, an English fleet was spotted outside of Vinga, Sweden. The beacon watchers thought it was an invasion and lit the beacon, and it took 24 hours until Stockholm was reached by the chain of fires. That was the last time signal beacons was used in Sweden. But during WW1, some archipelago islands south of Stockholm also had beacons prepared to light up, since those islands lacked a telephone system.

I would absolutely love this job! You and your buddy just camping on a mountain. Drinking a few brews and making some good camp fire food. Talk and sharpen your weapons. Practice sword fighting and strength training. Just have one job of lighting the beacon. Man that would be fun.
