McKellen's delivery is such a perfect match for Tolkien's Gandalf. Certain lines from the books could sound *so dumb* if handled by a lesser actor, but Ian McKellen had such an immense capacity to inflect such nuanced emotion and thought into each line it brings it past fantasy camp and makes you really believe you're hearing a mythic hero

It is still on the top rankings of book sold even 60+years after it's release. I highly doubt we will say the same about current fantasy epics in 60 years. LOTR is a masterpiece on the heights with Bethoven or the Mona Lisa.

That's true, but Mt. doom and mordor would have been far to full of orcs for Frodo and Sam to get through undetected. That's why after the battle of the Palenor fields, Aragorn assembles all of what is left of the armies of men and confronts Sauron in the Palantiri stone that was in Denethor's possession. In the stone he bluffs that he (Aragorn) has the ring and that with it he's coming to Mordor for victory. In reality of course Frodo still had the ring and because his mission was still totally unknown Sauron believed him and drained all of Mordor of orcs to confront Aragorn. Aragorn and all who followed him new they were grossly outnumbered 20 to 1 but it was known that this last distraction was the only opportunity for Frodo to make it safely. This is suggested in the movies but I think it's one of the major drawbacks that Peter Jackson didn't make this more clear for the audience. One thing which is painfully done wrong is there is a scene in the extended edition of ROTK where they show the moment Aragorn confronts Sauron, and instead of besting Sauron's will, Aragorn falls to the ground and drops the Palantir. . . which is just so wrong. I don't understand why they did that, but otherwise the movies are tremendous.

This is true but there’s something else everyone always forgets. Mt. Doom is guarded. There are thousands of orcs stationed right in front of it. Literally the only reason Frodo and Sam got through is because Sauron sent them all to the Black Gate to destroy Aragorn’s army. Between this and the fact that he can’t imagine someone destroying the ring, he just didn’t see the need for placing guards directly in front of the door

I can't get enough of this world . Im soaking it in like a dry sponge. I love the Story of the fall of Numenor and the parallels to Beren and Luthien, it makes Aragons Story so much more interesting and to know Gandalf is a Maiar and what might he holds. My favourite character is Feanor and his story. He is such a crazy and badass character and moved so much in the world. Really amazing stories and it makes the timespan and climax of LOTR look so small. Sorry for fanboying so much I just can't hold myself when it comes to that topic.

I grabbed the Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales of Numenor and Middle Earth, The Children of Hurin, Beren and Luthien, the Fall of Gondolin, the Book of Lost Tales, the Shaping of Middle Earth. Tolkien has so many more books/writings it’s endless fantasy I love it

Mmm… though indeed very good, I’d say as someone who read the book 100 or more times, that Sean Connery is agreed upon as optimal for Gandalf, Liam neeson perfect for Aragorn (though Daniel day Lewis also could have been marvellous) and triple H for boromir and for me they are the perfect cast and it sure bugs me. And I don’t like wood’s Frodo at all.

That's in fact the Fate of the Ring theme, which foreshadows the Destruction of the Ring theme that plays when Sauron is destroyed in the end.

Which is sad considering the whole plot hole of the one ring at that time, surely if sauron was in possession of it at the time, Eru would have destroyed it then. Nevertheless one of my favourite stories.

@@wintax Curious why you think that's a plot hole. If Eru wanted to intervene directly and destroy the One Ring he could have done so at any time, at least most probably. Sauron did have it in his possession and used it with great affect to overthrow and corrupt minds.

However you're not the first to think of it and so Tolkien directly addressed it in Letter 211: "I do not think one need boggle at this spirit carrying off the One Ring, upon which his power of dominating minds now largely depended." Sauron was able to carry the ring from Numeor, after it was cast into the sea and the world reshaped, by his spirit, at the same time that he himself escaped to Middle-Earth.
