Designing Women's Dixie Carter... as a designer, long before that series! Really e(enjoy seeing so many faces (such as Ed Harris in a previous episode) when they were young up and comers, who went on to make their mark as actors. Thank you!

@@bonniemoerdyk9809 well if you're Clark Kent rip your shirt off in the middle of metropolis and pray someone doesn't notice. But I digress. Ask stores.

A pre-"Designing Women" Dixie Carter. Carly was in 9 to 5 & Jumpin' Jack Flash.

The very next season - 1982-83 - Christina Pickles went on to great success on St. Elsewhere for 6 years. Of course she is best known as Mrs. Gellar on Friends.

In all honesty, I thought Christina Pickles was the most attractive woman on "Friends"--and I'm roughly the age of the six principles. Another "Friends" actor--Larry Hankin, who played "Mr. Heckles"--appeared in the first "Lou Grant" episode in 1977. After Ed Asner, Hankin, shown briefly as a taxi driver, spoke the first line on the series.

Big Lou Grant fan but this episode wasn't that good, in my opinion. I can't believe Charlie advised Lou to go after Jessica. Firstly, she lied to Lou about seeing someone else (lying by omission) so she's self-serving and can't be trusted. Secondly, any woman (or man) that has an affair is capable of doing it again. Third, Lou was correct when he said why did he need a neurotic woman who has a need to be dumped on by a married man for seven years. She's got some serious self-esteem issues. Yes, the show made the ending sweet but in real life this situation rarely ends well especially when someone (she) describes her private life as "complicated". That really means unhealthy. So denial and poor judgement are part of her repertoire. Finally, she complained to Lou that she was "dumped hard" by him. Sheesh. Was it really? And even if it was, can you blame him? (How can you dump me just because you found out I've been seeing a married man for seven years?" Lol.) And for her to have a epiphany and decide to suddenly dump the married guy cold after seeing him for so long....well, gimme odds. This story line had a weird approach; It's too bad they didn't simple allow Lou to meet a well-grounded person and go from there. Oh, and Lance is not a good addition to the show. But to be fair, the writing in season five is not the same quality as the other four seasons.

Maybe, in a way, they illustrate your valid points about her by the fact that we never see Jessica again after this episode.

I'm gonna have to read the Lou Grant book to see if my theory is correct that Lance was being groomed to replace Rossi had there been a 6th season

I think the "Lance" character was intended to serve a dual purpose--to show a bumbling, rookie reporter and to attract young viewers. He was a good addition, though, and he was good in this episode.
