On "My Car Story" we're in the Suburbs of Chicago on 9-14-16.
We're looking at a 1942 Cadillac Series 62 2 Door Coupe Fastback.
The 1942 Cadillac was manufactured in October 1941 just a few weeks before America’s entry into World War II. The war halted production in February 1942. The division turned out tanks, aircraft engines, and munitions until V-J day in 1945. On December, 31st 1941 Washington DC issued “Black Out” orders to Cadillac and the rest of the industry that no car would be delivered with stainless steel or chrome trim.
Cadillac built 16,511 cars for 1942, however only about 500 Series 62 2 Door Coupes, and this one as you can see has all the chrome.
The Cadillac Series 62, called the “Sixty Two“ boasted a new “ Fastback “ Coupe, and is easily identified by its longer rear side windows and bullet-shape fenders.
The engine is a V8 346 CI, 150 HP L-Head motor.
The car's Owners are Art & Marge Swanson. Art & Marge shares their passion for the 1940’s Cadillacs body style and they both enjoy sharing their cars at the many car shows they attend.

I remember my dad's first car after returning from the war was a black '41 Cadillac Model 62 - almost exactly like this one. I recall one of the quirks was the turn signal: Pull down for a right turn and up for left. (Maybe my dad just got the wire crossed?) At one point he had to mill the heads and got more compression. MAN! That car could really go! Mom enjoyed driving it, too. When getting gas, she enjoyed fooling with the attendant to find the gas cap. :-) When I would be kneeling in the passenger seat, her arm would always come up to keep me in the seat when she was braking. Thanks for the memories.

I restore old cars myself. I can't imagine the time it took to run down all the parts for a 76 year old car. Just the chrome parts alone would of been impossible to find. I can't thank you enough for bringing a piece of history back to life. Thank you.

Don’t heckle me, or make fun. I just discovered how beautiful 40’s Cadillacs are. My aunt had a white ‘59 which to a 4 year old was the coolest car ever. My grandfather and another aunt drove 1960’s Continentals, it was always a treat for a little boy to open and close those huge rear doors. I could sit and stare at those Lincoln’s forever because, at the time, they were the most beautiful cars on the road. Later, my grandpa had Continental Marks all through the 70’s until he retired from Ford. I remember, being the wound up grade schooler I was, when he came to pick me up for my first airplane flight, I just knew the plane was going to crash, and as we drove away, me in the backseat, that the last time I saw my house, would be through the oval window of a Lincoln, LOL. Anyway, these 40’s Cadillacs are just pure art. The lines are just beautiful. The fast back silhouette is just sexy. You just don’t see these on the road, you might see an oversized, very rounded 50’s example, but these are very memorable.

Magnificent restoration of a classic work of art. The extremely dramatic difference in styling between the 1941 Cadillac (also gorgeous) and the 1942 is quite amazing. In only one year they fast-forwarded to an ultra-modern look.

Lincoln had this streamline sedans 2 or 4 door in the line up since 1937 in the Zephyr program, I guess and GM copied that. Interestingly after Edsel death the Lincolns switch their front design to a more Cadillac type grille design in 1942 and loose much of it's charm.

I love all of the "streamliner" cars. 6:07 I have had several cars with Bosch components but this is the first time I have seen "American Bosch" . Bosch died in '42 and I am surprised that the USA even continued affiliation with Bosch through the war.

You'd be shocked at the 'affiliations' that continued unabated thru-out the 'War years'...most notably 'IBM' which shipped everything to Germany thru 'neutral Countries'...most especially the 'punch-cards' that were critical to the 'IBM' tabulating machines ( 'Smith' was the corporate-head of the 'National Tabulating Company' in the '30's and Hitler was so enthralled with the new 'wonder machines' that he personally awarded Smith the highest civilian 'Honors' in Berlin) Yeah...it 's true, every word.( **IBM's 'dirty little secret' they never mention!** )

Yes...but neither of those companies provided the means to 'classify/file/and most important, **FINDPEOPLE**...certain 'groups' of people in Germany and any other European Country within the sphere of the 'Reich'...and 'IBM' made it possible for dedicated government agencies to find virtually anyone in only hours at most, rather than weeks or months.(with the proper 'punch-card indexing system'...only minutes are required to know 'who/what/when/where/why of tens of thousands of people in a given geography) Literally thousands of these 'tabulating machines' were found in Germany/France/and Poland after the war, complete w/tens of thousands of 'blank' punch-cards in specially-sealed crates to protect the cards from humidity...(no one had a clue in any 'Intelligence' service "What are these used for? It's obvious what the electro-mechanical functions are...but why so many? And for what purpose?"**We all know the 'purpose' now, of course**

Very interesting story around this magnificent jewel Lou! - When you went inside the coupe, and you saw the details, - the yellowish patina on the steering wheel, - in particular when panning over the instruments: - I could (almost) literally sense the smell and ambience this must have given you! - Outstanding job done, with lots of love and commitment for this nice vehicle right there, - and to think [as Art, the owner stated- that this unique piece of automotive history was 'bound for the scrapyard' - just blows your mind!]. Not only did Art come across as a very likeable guy (too bad about Art's ailment!), the weather was good. and you had a splendid location in which to do the 'walk-around'! [on the "downside", I - and probably many with me - felt the seance was over much too quickly!!! 😉. . . . . . ] Thanks for sharing this gem Lou!👌💓⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

@cpl8139usa
@cpl8139usa 5 жыл бұрын
@@gregorytimmons4777 You are right. Old's was the "tryout" car for the Caddy. Anything new was in the OLD'S FIRST, TO FIND THE BUGS. When proven GM put it into the Caddy. Buick switched when the DynaFlow factory burned down. In the late '50s I think.
@dlwatib
@dlwatib 5 жыл бұрын
Sorry, Hydramatic was never built by Buick. They developed their own automatic transmission called the Dynaflow. Hydramatic or Hydra-matic (original name: Detroit Transmission) was its own division of GM. ypsiautoheritage.org/cars/hydramatic/ It was the Hydramatic factory that burned down (in 1953), not the Dynaflow factory. Some GM cars that would normally have received Hydramatic transmissions received Dynaflow transmissions that year because of the fire. Note at 8:45 that the shift pattern for these early Hydramatics was [N Dr Lo R], but they do have a parking pawl. Drivers should put the transmission in R before shutting off the engine to park the car with the transmission locked. (Shift back to N before restarting the engine.) R was next to Lo so you could easily rock the car back and forth to get the car unstuck. It can also be tricky to engage R on startup: the proper way to shift into reverse without grinding is to shift first into Lo, pause a couple seconds to allow the transmission to engage, then shift quickly into R. This will allow reverse engagement without the grinding. If you do accidentally grind, shift immediately to Lo and try again. Dynaflow was a 2 speed transmission. The original Hydramatic was a 4 speed transmission. Hydramatic was much more efficient and responsive, but the Dynaflow was smoother since it had no detectable shift points. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynaflow
