You should also look into road hierarchy as another tool for the toolbox. It helps so much once you get high density and high population. Guides can be found from city planner plays cities skylines channel Arterial large main roads with limited connections to maximize movement, like 4-6 lane wide roads. Collector roads that are typically wide 4 lane roads, they connect between arterial roads and collect local road traffic. 2 lane local roads, maybe small 4 lane roads, what most buildings are connected to but mostly local traffic should be moving through it. They should typically only connect to collectors and not arterial.

Hey biffa I have a challenge for you! (Really hard in my opinion) Design a district in a way that once non-pubic buildings are constructed you can't demolish them (you could check them as historic one by one, but please don't it'll take ages!). You can only demolish only things built by you. This means that you need to think ahead all possible problems and solve them during design face and if one slips you can only solve them with soft changes or replacing your stuff (which probably will cause another issue later). Just a district of a considerable size like the one with canals. I think it will be fun to watch you dealing with it. Hope it does not demand too long to complete (content wise)

To avoid possibly losing a save, you can always make multiple saves of the same city (especially before doing something major like using a new mod). Also the tunnel option makes no sense. The tunnels are going the wrong way lol. They tunnel underneath just grass for a small part instead of the road to get to the other side which would make the most sense. The way it sets it up that way it makes it so that you have to walk underground underneath grass, then turn and take a straight line underground to the middle, then turn again towards the one you want to exit on and then come out again on the other side, instead of just having the tunnels go down underneath the road and come back up on the other side and maybe have the long ones meeting up in the middle from underground in the middle of the tunnel which would be in line with the road in case you wanted to go straight across 2 streets over it would be quicker, otherwise there’s just tunnels tunneling under grass for no reason lol
