Just wanted to mention something that I forgot to in the video: I plan on covering the movie and lost episode eventually; however, that movie did not impact my overall feeling on the series, as I don't think it's integral to the story as it stands. Thus, I didn't feel that it needed to get involved in order to answer my question about how great the series is, and I feel that the TV series stands on its own. Basically, I think the movie is an extra thing right now. Maybe it will be more important if season 6 gets made. But yeah, I'll come back to it eventually--but for now I wanted to move onto something else. Anyway, thanks for watching! I hope you enjoyed it ^_^

Here is how Terra came back. It's pretty obvious if you think about it. In the season two finale, she was turned to stone after stopping Slade. In season four, Trigon turned everyone one earth except the Titans to stone. This was of course undone when Raven defeated Trigon and everyone who was turned to stone, was turned back to normal, including Terra who clearly has amnesia.

Another thing I liked about the Teen Titans initial meeting is that it takes place in front of the Pizza restaurant that they frequent throughout the series. Without being too in your face about it, shows that they all probably hold a little sentimental value in that place because that's where there journey together ultimately started.

Hilariously my conclusion was the exact opposite. This show is better than I remember. As a kid, I never saw the large plots and only caught the episodic ones, so I just saw it as a cool action show with cool characters. I never knew there was so much depth to the characters and plots until I watched this series, and now I feel like I was seriously underrating the show!

Your discussion of Starfire as a character that is not necessarily "complex" or has a complex character arc made me think of something out of game design: Complexity does not automatically equal depth. In a game, sometimes the greatest enjoyment is not from having many different mechanics, but from fully exploring one or a few. Think Portal- you literally just have one special mechanic, but it's used in many different ways. When Starfire is the focus, it's not generally about her changing who she is, it's about her and us learning more about her- how she reacts in different situations, how her relationships grow and change, and how our view of her changes.

That's something called a flat character arc. Basically, the character never changes as themselves, thus making them a flat character. Typically, this would make a character very uninteresting, since characters changing over time is like, the basis of story telling. However, the story instead focuses on the impacts the flat character has on the people and world around them, which is what makes them interesting. An example of this is Goku from the dragon ball series. Throughout the series, Goku is somewhat dimwitted, but pure of heart and merciful. As a result, not only is he able to consistently 'save the day', but he also causes many of the series' villains to change their ways and become good guys (I mean, about 70% of his allies were former antagonists by the end of the series). Another example, as you said, is Iroh. He never really changes throughout the series (except in flashbacks/before the series), however, his deep wisdom an sense of morality allows for him to help others, turning his nephew over to the side of good, and bolstering the emotional development of a few other characters, such as Toph.

I actually love the finale for this season. I love open ended endings. Teen Titans never had a continuous story or plot that needed an end it was always a bunch of adventures that the hero’s where on and arcs. Just because the shows over doesn’t mean that the adventure is over. It’s up to me to continue to imagine what kind of new adventures the hero’s go on. How does it keep going. I think this type of ending works best with super hero’s.

16:26 I can't say I fully agree with this, but I can understand the disconnect. It would've been nice to see more moments, but as a person who has been asked to care for multiple young children, you grow a bond with them without them having to be 'useful.' I've called multiple children 'my kids' very quickly and become quite protective of them since they were placed in my care. Raven gained experience from this and probably sympathized with the children who were in some ways outcasted and alone with only themselves to care for each other. At least, that is how I saw it. I honestly loved this episode and it's more, I guess, 'motherly' side of Raven. Or, at least, attempt of being a big sister. >w

This was the season that I saw the most of as a kid and i can personally say I really liked it at the time. Despite the limited development of a lot of the other heroes the idea of there being kids all over the world ready to fight for the greater good was so enamoring for me and each characters design was so strong that I still liked meeting and seeing all of them in action. It was the same reason why Kids Next Door was m favorite show as a kid I guess. Discovering that that last episode was THE last episode though... that killed me.

That segment about how character development isn’t inherently necessary and how even simple characters can stand out just by having strong characterization and/or having a strong impact on other characters who are also worth following, is beyond therapeutic. Thanks for that. After all, just establishing a character in a way that gets us to care is enough to work. It’s in doing that, and continuing to do things with the already established character makes a character even greater, regardless of if it’s about development. Also, development isn’t the same as establishment or fleshing a character out, though I’ll agree not doing enough with the latter two before the arc’s 2-per finale is a worthwhile complaint. Ultimately, this was a satisfying conclusion to this video series, especially for those like me who vicariously relived this show through your analysis series.

This season was the first time they introduced my favorite character from the comics. Jericho, the boy on the mountain who is a mute and plays the guitar. Unfortunately he got very little development. In the comics he had one of my favorite arcs, as he's Slade's son and chooses to move against him and join the Titans. It's fantastic, and his relationship with the other Titans is some of my favorite - especially Raven & Robin. I hope there is a sixth season of this show and beyond, and I'm excited for you to tackle Avatar! :)

You're a great reviewer and you deserve this new success. I do disagree on a few points in your analysis and you tend to be demanding when it comes to emotional development (this is a pre teen action show) but your opinions are nonetheless insightful. Raven became protective of the kids by virtue of taking care of them. Even when kids misbehave, you want to protect them. That episode was speaking to older siblings and baby sitters so I get that some people won't understand that dynamic. It showed Raven has a nurturing side and can extend her loyalty to strangers in need, not just her friends. As a kid, the hotspot episode was suspenseful so I tended to care about what happened (madame rouge trying to trick him combined with the fact that he could accidentally destroy the area since he was in an oil rich area are details you may have missed. It was a conflict of hotspot trying to be level headed when a mind game and a physical limit were being played against him). Overall, the episodes in this season were somewhat rushed. I wish there was more development, particularly argent, wondergirl, and kilowatt. But the extra heroes were absolutely necessary to defeat the brotherhood of evil. The Teen Titans Go comics (not the new show, there is a 55 issue story that accompanies the old show) goes into more detail on recruiting other heroes. They even introduce the 2 wondergirls and geo force, slade's daughter, and many other characters that never made it to the show. The art style is similar to the Young Justice comics of the 90s and early 2000s. In this series, Cyborg fulfills his drive for leadership because he has created a global Teen Titans training program. It is really interesting and ties up loose ends. The comics are really cheap and available on dccomics.com. Please give these issues a look when you have the time, Murakami even worked on them. Robin and star fire actually become an official couple in these comics. Cyborg's relationship to Sarasim is fleshed out much more. These comics give so much context into the series. Here is a link to the wikipedia page en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teen_Titans_Go! I hope season 6 comes and that red x is actually jason todd. Otherwise, great job on this series!!

That implies that it actually *does* get better for other creators. It often doesn't. It was extremely surprising that Lowart has his claim releases because that doesn't usually happen - it's far more likely to turn out like MarsReviews where strikes are put on the channel until it's at risk of deletion. There's no need to slag off other creators to support Lowart.

I adore the episode with Raven taking care of the kids. It's a really cute little story, and I believe that Raven always cared about the kids once they were on the mission, it was just a case of letting herself admit it. This would have been a better handled if we learned more about Raven's past tho - my theory is just pure speculation and doesn't have a lot to do with what's on screen. "Lightspeed" is a favourite of mine too, partially bc Rosenbaum's Kid Flash was just a really fun character. I didn't mind "Things Change", and I feel like I'm one of the few who is ok with it as the ending of the series (for now anyway... Season 6 anyone?) I didn't mind not knowing what the villain was in the episode, and I feel like Slade is planning something and is intent on getting under their skin first, but I like the ambiguity. And with Terra... I like the ambiguity there too. I found the ending here between Beast Boy and Terra was something that resonated with me upon rewatching, as I have a habit of holding onto people even after they're gone or changed. And sometimes there is no real closure, but I feel that the Beast Boy/Terra story got that. It doesn't matter if it was her. He needs to move on all the same. I've really enjoyed watching your series on this show. You have gone really in depth here, and pulled out layers of it I have never seen before. Good job, man.

My opinion on Teen Titans is similar to mine on Batman: The Animated Series. There are great moments and episodes. Ones that will truly live on and take their place as classics. But, I believe that both series have the same issue. I.E an extreme lack of consistency when it comes to the overall quality. There are amazing and truly brilliant episodes. But also a fair amount of mediocre, and even really bad episodes and moments. Both series aren’t exactly what they’re cracked up to be. But that doesn’t make them bad by any means. For me, this show is almost as great as I remember. It's hard for anything to meet rose-tinted expectations. Like you said, scrutinizing it brought out lows I'd never considered as a kid, but made the peaks that much more rewarding, and there were enough of those to mostly make up for the flaws. Teen Titans still may just have my favorite cast of characters in a show. It was quite "shocking" for my young mind, seeing Cyborg almost lose his humanity, or all the Titans nearly die from nano probes. Yet it balanced that out with charming lighthearted moments very well, helping me latch onto something while developing a more mature outlook on the world. Its a show that always did its best to entertain and be ambitious, even if it didn't always work out. I'm glad to have grown up with it, and I thoroughly enjoyed your take on the series even if we didn't always agree. Thanks for these!

I love what you say about the consistency of these characters. I think that's something that makes comic books and comic book based media really special. Each issue throws an established character into a novel circumstance, allowing the writer to show multiple sides to a static character and find creative uses for their static abilities (Justice League Action really runs with this). This is in contrast to most anime, in which characters grow to overcome a static obstacle.

I say "Yes". Its "uniqueness" that you mentioned certainly permeants to validity today, and it doesn't seem right to see it undermined like this. I still cannot find one single piece of media that has been able to stretch its tonal shifts between such absurdity and drama so far and so well, not even in Japanese animé. Some shows like Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, and Higurashi come close, but never reach the heights of Teen Titans' bizarre concepts. Sure, maybe there's something like the Fate franchise, but those radically different tones are kept in their own separate shows, at least as far as I'm aware. Honestly, I think it ended up being better when I recently revisited it with my little sister. I was able to see everything more consistently in the proper order for one thing, and I was much better able to appreciate the nuances of episodes like Spellbound, Haunted, and of course... Troq. Plus, it really looks like I'm much more accepting of diving head-first into the sheer insanity of the comedic episodes than you, as I never found them nearly so dull or pointless. It's shaped the way I write, and I hope that someday, I'll come out with an ongoing saga that gives this kind of gargantuan tonal and emotional range to people like what Teen Titans brought to me.

This is an old comment on Teen Titans but I thought it worth replying to. I agree the show is really good at having a large range of tone on display and that makes it a great series. It is still a very unique show in its' visual design too, even with the popularity of japan styled anime. I hope you got to write your saga with the difference in tones by the way.

You did a fantastic analysis of this series. When I was young, I didn't watch TT as much as everybody else did. But later, I was led into believing it was something super great. When I finally watched through the show myself, my feelings were mixed all the way through. I never thought it was bad, but there were things that really didn't work for me. Not only did you share some of my thoughts, but you pointed them out much deeper and better than I could have. While I did like TT, I was wary of what nostalgia caused the fans to say about it, which did give me bias against it. However, you remained unbiased throughout your whole commentary.

This series of analysis gave me more reasons to love the show, even if the ultimate conclusion you came was that it isnt as great, it shows how unique it was and an experience that dosn´t come often on cartoon tv shows. Other shows we had back in the days were Avatar the Last Airbender, and I think the one that stands out today would be steven universe. These 3 shows are very different but they all focus on a small cast of caracthers that develop through the series, in a way that tackles some intersting themes about insecurities and human behaviour, and that´s what makes us like them so much.

*I never forgot "the first episode", it meant the world to me* , because of how cartoons usually play episodes randomly on TV, I got very happy when I got to watch their "first episode" cause I thought it was, maybe they did it like that because the viewers would probably find this one randomly anyways, but this episode made me question a lot about the series, it felt out of place. *And when I thought of it, its not just out of place, it explains why the whole series was presented differently:* This episode is what it is, for us, up until this point they've made several episodes where they show the Teen Titans showing up somewhere, meeting new characters, and then the titans teach said characters something important, and move on. This episode brings up why the first episodes of the series were so blank, and as it turns out, the actual start of the series puts us in the position of these characters, where we're met with the Teen Titans and we don't know anything about them, but as the series go by we learn more and more about them, and they teach us important lessons through the journey. We never saw their origins, because we never needed it, we experienced the same as every other character in the series, and we were the first "characters" to do that. It was only on this season that they reconsidered, they knew teen titans was coming to an end, so they gave us one "finale" to at least the most asked question around the series, I remember feeling complete after watching that episode, because it felt like all I needed to know. It was never a "first" episode, it was a finale, it was made for us, the viewers and the fans to watch and complete probably the most important piece of lore to the puzzle, and this piece was made by us, watching the whole series and building up to this episode. And it shows that the beginning doesn't always have to explain upfront how characters are developed, I think the entirety of teen titans tries to show you that, the world moves without you, regardless of you being there or not, Hotspot already had his origins by the time you met him, you're meeting him with robin, you're not supposed to know everything about hotspot to understand him, just like in life you meet many people that obviously have their own pasts and experiences, and you need to be understanding that not only you weren't there, but that it was a different experience from yours. I only got to understand the whole series after finally getting to that origins episode, it made me question "why", "why up until this point every character showed up out of nowhere, but teen titans had an origin episode??" it always felt out of place, it felt like it was bad from a series stand-point to deliver their origins so late. And it was because we were never meant to see their origins, yet the creators felt like we deserved to see what we wanted to see, and I'm so thankful they did, not only I felt complete, but it was there that I realized what this whole series was trying to teach me, what Teen Titans were trying to teach me, they were teaching me about how to communicate with others, how to work together, how to understand and handle new coworkers and students, new people that just drop into your life, how to be presented with a situation and work with the people you have towards a solution. Even the name of the episode is perfect for what it represents, its just called "Go".

OK, this is my first YT comment ever. I think you deserve it: your analyses of different series are top-notch. I'm a Linguistics PhD with some Literature background, having taught in colleges in the past years, so I think I know something about this... Yours is a great job! I disagree with some things you say, but that's perfectly normal and I won't bother you with small disagreements when overall I loved your work. I just wanted to add some sidenotes that may be helpful or interesting after having rewatched the series again after years. 1) I guess you're familiar with the fact that season 5 was an afterthought. Raven's arc in season 4 was originally meant to be the series finale (there are hints of this scattered all over the series... not just in the obvious Raven-centric episodes). That's why the last episodes of season 4 are called "The End" and if you interpret the great dialogue between Raven and Robin at the end of "The End (Part 3)" knowing this, it makes even much more sense and elevates it to newer heights. Even Starfire's bad joke at the end is conveyed as if it was as a series finale. But ratings went up so high that WB wanted a fifth season. The plan went wrong and, as you mentioned, they cut down an originally longer season to the 13 episodes the other seasons had. 2) One of the most important things that IMO improves from season 2 onwards is the scores, the soundtrack quality reaching its peak in seasons 3 and 4. "Revolution" nails it bringing up Brit prog rock tunes. "Master of your fate" is a masterpiece of cartoon music, even using musical "counterpoints" for each of the Titans (listen to the bells). The sound effects in Raven's arc play a huge part in the atmosphere (please rewatch the beginning of "The End (Part 1)"... the use of fading atonal music while Raven falls to the ground during the eclipse is gorgeous). The series uses an amazing variety of rhythms and musical resources. 3) The biggest strength of the show is also its weakness... It departed from the usual adventure-type plots by using a more character-driven type of narrative, sometimes even getting into the symbolic. The challenge the creators had to face is to do that in 20' long episodes... and they succeeded in fairly most cases. "How long is forever" is something you rarely see in children's TV shows... it's almost Star Trek in its premise. Raven's arc is possibly the fan favorite because of the things you pointed out in your analysis: the actual plot of Raven's fight against her father is actually quite linear and predictable... it's the way it's told what makes it amazing. Sometimes episodes end a bit abruptly because of the time limit, but even so they managed to do a great job. 4) This is more personal: the series for me is even greater than I remembered it. It's not nostalgia: when I was young I wasn't able to catch the huge amount of cultural references, hidden plot points, symbolism, and the overall atmosphere that TT had. Little things like the fact that the junkyard where the Titans fight Mumbo Jumbo in "The Sum of His Parts" is called "Tito's Junkyard" is a gem for a mambo lover like me (I'm pretty sure they were referencing Tito Puente... "Mambo Jambo" is one of the most famous mambos in history and, while he didn't compose it, Puente played it regularly). As a child I could grasp the "fantasy" surface of the deep spiritual ideas behind Raven's arc or the tragic death of Terra, but now I understand them under a much different light. The fact that even more than 10 years later we're still revisiting an animation series that was part of our childhood is already a good sign of its quality, IMO. I could go on and on, but I think this is already too long for a YT comment. I truly loved this series you produced and I'm following your new content too (ATLA didn't have such an impact on me back then, but I guess I'll give it a try again because of you). Keep doing these great videos! We need more people passionate about stories... Telling stories is something that makes us intrinsically human. Thanks!

I watched it all again last year and I must say, it IS as great as I remembered! While the issues you point are very true, they never bothered me since the show has always been entertaining to watch at the very least. About the last episode: I feel like I'm in minority here, I LOVE THIS EPISODE! This episode dares to make the viewer upset as a method to convey its message: Things Change, whether you like it or not; The villian of the episode is not important, it was used just as a plot device to allow Beast Boy to be alone with "Terra". You KNOW they're gonna beat it, how they do it is not important to this episode; This is obviously the real Terra, she doesn't remember her past or pretends not to remember it, either way, she moved on; Beast Boy accepted that Terra won't come back; Not everything has to be resolved, some things never are, and that's just fine. I'm fine with the way the show ended, even though there's still Slade and Rex X, but mystery is kind of the point of their characters anyway.

Her dialogue definitely confirms that she is Terra and does remember. "Things were NEVER the way YOU remember" "Things Change Beast Boy. The girl you WANT me to be is just a MEMORY." An interview with the creators has official artwork of the "school girl" which flat out lists her as being Terra, and the Tie in Comic "Teen Titans Go!" (Not the show) has an issue that distinctly shows her remembering her past as it has her brother show up at her school and she recognizes him and smiles when she sees him fly away. www.titanstower.com/five-seasons-of-murakanime/ www.titanstower.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Terra_ModelSh_CNTT.jpg 1.bp.blogspot.com/-HvdFhuDYKM0/UsFgwhvdcAI/AAAAAAAAASQ/yeCy0XeOLwY/s1600/20.jpg 1.bp.blogspot.com/-ogstJBRhu4Y/UsFgxZoyGZI/AAAAAAAAASg/bcgSpvXYVSA/s1600/21.jpg Glen: I don’t think they did. Do you think people get it now? BW: I think they do. I think people understood what was building when we got to CALLING ALL TITANS and TITAN TOGETHER. I think people really liked them. Glen: But not THINGS CHANGE [laughs]. BW: I think it was a mixed bag. Some people understand why you did that story, Some people don’t want to accept that story. Glen: Why do you think that is? BW: I think people wanted a certain ending to the Terra storyline. I think people imagined, if she came back, she would be the sixth member of the team and start dating Beast Boy, The End. And that’s the typical “Hollywood Ending.” If you look at DVDs and alternate endings to movies, a lot of times the original endings were the ‘depressing’ ones. Maybe the hero doesn’t triumph, exactly. I think an audience has been pre-conditioned to want only happy endings. Glen: Sure. I think when you watch the arc, I think THINGS CHANGE explains what the whole series is about. BW: Right. It’s about growth. And change. Now, how did you guys develop THINGS CHANGE as an episode? Glen: I think it was mostly [Story Editor] Amy [Wolfram] and I. And the main point of the story isn’t whether the girl is Terra or not. Even in the credits, she’s listed as “schoolgirl” or something. Sometimes, I think explaining a story is like explaining a joke: When you talk about it too much, it isn’t even funny anymore. I almost feel like I’d be effecting what the show means to people. It’s interesting how mad people get about the Raven-Robin thing, or the Robin identity thing, or the Terra arc. Part of the point of THINGS CHANGE is that, well. things change. And not everyone is cut out to be a hero. What I like about Titans is that a lot of kids can look at Beast Boy and BE Beast Boy. There’s something about the Titans being vague, that the kids can project themselves onto the characters. I love when kids come up to me and tell me that they really like a character. I like that they really relate to these characters. I think that’s important to people. I think THINGS CHANGE is, in a way, a reaction to the fans taking it all way to seriously. Or projecting too much onto the characters. Like, thinking, “These characters HAVE to be in a relationship. These characters HAVE to like each other.” But in real life, you just don’t always get everything you want. I hope that makes sense. BW: Where did the idea for that story come from? How far back did you plan that episode? Glen: We figured it out when we were talking about what the fifth season was all about. I think we even talked about bringing “Terra” back during the Trigon storyline. But that didn’t make sense; It didn’t organically work with that. I was just too many things to try and do. And y’know, I really like the character. But sometimes that alone isn’t a good enough reason to bring a character back. So Amy and I discussed the story and we decided what it should be about. Really early on, we figured out what the story would be and what it meant. And we both really liked it. And when you start getting into a story and it becomes about, “How did she get unfrozen? Who did that? What form of science might bring her back?” When you start getting into those things, it gets away from what the story is about. At that point, it gets sort of fanboy and geeky. And you end up explaining things that don’t necessarily need to be explained. BW: The storytelling was very unique in that episode. Were there some specific influences? Glen: I really like “His and Her Circumstances.” Plus, I liked the contrast. We did this really, really, super-huge, massive action story. And then we do this really, really, tiny, small, personal story. The show was always about change and shifting gears. It was about being unpredictable. And I liked that. So that’s the reason why we wanted that storytelling in THINGS CHANGE. It’s supposed to be thoughtful. It’s supposed to be slow. It’s funny, because it seems self-explanatory to me. Here’s the thing: I like all different kinds of movies and comics. And so does the crew. That’s something unique about our crew; I think everyone came from different and unique backgrounds. And I think we took that and brought that into the show. The show was about how all these different personalities work together, and that’s what we did. We thought that was really important. So we wanted to make different kinds of shows. David [Slack]. Rob [Hoegee] and Amy [Wolfram] weren’t big comic book fans. So when I explained the show to them, I think they liked the fact that I just wanted interesting stories about interesting characters. And yeah, that’s what comics can be. And that’s what super-heroes can be. The “schoolgirl” in THINGS CHANGE BW: Are you satisfied with THINGS CHANGE as the series finale? Glen: Yeah, I am. I think it’s a nice cap to the “Terra” story. I think the thing people don’t realize about “Terra” is: she wasn’t cut out to be a super-hero. She had super-powers, but she wasn’t cut out for that. And that’s what makes her a tragic character. And I think that’s what makes that character interesting. It’s hard to explain that sort of thing to people. Like, some characters are born to die. And that doesn’t mean that we don’t like that character. That’s the lesson of that character.

I’m incredibly happy that someone has gone out their way to objectively analyze this show and critique it as someone like me who was also a fan of the series as a child or teenager. I can personally agree with so much that you’ve said but in contrast with what you’ve said, but also to agree with on some level, I do feel like the last episode was an appropriate way to end the series as we knew it. It was symbolic for us as an audience that, not only do things change, but it almost put us, the audience, in the place of Beast Boy. In the episode, he wishes that it could go back to the way it was with Terra, much like how we the audience wish that the series could return like it had been. But in the end of the episode, he is forced to let Terra go and run towards the light at the other end of the hall. Much like how we had to let this series go at the time of its cancelation and move on with our lives. Or even more broadly like how you said very well, how things change in life and as much as we wish things could go back to the way they were, we need to find the strength to move on with our lives on our own. I still go back to this episode years later and even at age 20, I still find myself brought close to tears by how much I can relate. Again, thank you so much for covering this series. It means a lot to me seeing someone else who cares about the series to analyze and critique it on a case by case basis

I disagree with you Teen Titans isn't a show that just plays in our nostalgia factors it does so much more than that, as a 24 years old now I find the themes Teen Titans brought more than ever. As a male my struggle to grow up and be a man, my insecurities of people criticizing me as immature and etc. My fears and potential inevitable fate that I will fail again and again since I failed before. My embarrassment and anguish that I was manipulated by people and was used. I love this viewer and he did a fantastic job but I respectfully disagree, season 3 for me was great because it related to me on a personal level. I realized I am already a man and its not what other people think of me that defines who I am, going on great lengths to search who I am and the person that I need and want to be when it was already here all along truly made my life fulfilling. Season 5 was also extremely relatable to me the way how Beastboy grows and reminds people that Teen Titans isn't defined by its original members it is defined by the ideals that they believe in and how they act. The themes are even deeper than people thought it was and if they can apply these themes in their lives it can help them in ways it never thought it could.

Your multi-part analysis was well thought out and you kept things compelling. I liked that you focused on the problems you had with the show and then explained how you would actually fix this. With that said, the show is as great as I remember. Some of the problems you mentioned such as the lack of build up for the finale, the rushed feeling in Cyborg's arc, and Terra's own story were things I noticed when I was a kid. I couldn't really rationalize them enough, but I still noticed them. However, in spite of being able to look at these problems as an adult, it hasn't effected my view on the cartoon that much. That final episode does however still annoy me, but more so at Cartoon Network than the creators for thinking it was a great idea to cancel this show.

And so, the end-all-be-all Teen Titans 2003 analysis is concluded. Great series, man. I agree with your final thoughts about TT2003 not being as great as we remember. It is inconsistent, with highs here and there, and plenty of food for thought with a more grown up brain. Regarding the final episode, I wanted to throw some thoughts out: Something I haven't seen anyone touch on is Robin's contacting of Beast Boy. Not only do we have to accept that things change, and that all of us will eventually move on from one experience to the other, but we have to get back to doing the things we need to be doing. Gotta get back to work, back to school, back to your family, friends, whatever that is for each of us. For Beast Boy, it's being a hero and helping his friends. He runs out into the sunlight, into brighter days ahead of him after this turning point. Props to Beast Boy's actor. His voice is almost about to break when he says "Beast Boy to Robin," but then he hardens when he says "over" because he just has to. There's no other option but to harden and try to be good as we move through life's hurtful experiences. Like losing a friend.

Anyways, I really enjoyed hearing your critiques, especially when you managed to connect some of the 'single' episodes to the arcs of each character or season. I couldn't take the Doompatrol and its nemesis seriously. They felt like a TV-show within a TV-show, and their story could've been resolved in the two parter alone if the heroes didn't let the brotherhood of evil run. And, like you, I find myself a little disappointed that the rose-tinted glasses just didn't hold up. Maybe it's the fact that we are spoiled by the idea that cartoons on kid's channels can be better than they seem, that they can have intricate writing and unforgettable characters. Maybe it's the idea that we're living in a Golden Age of TV generally, and that excellence is just the norm. Maybe we were just kids, and TT was just that cool.

I only ever saw two episodes of this growing up. One I don't remember well, and one was the Mad Mod episode where he turned everything British. I never knew the title. I just remembered my cousins watching it while babysitting me. Cut to freshman year of high school, when I found images of the Teen Titans online. I was so excited, because I only had vague positive memories of the show, and now I finally had a name to place with it. I watched it. I loved it. I know it has its flaws, but I love it more than any of the other superhero cartoons I've seen (and I've seen a lot.) That's probably in part due to living a good part of my life with this show being a mystery in the back of my mind. It was like a myth in my head, it was larger than life. But I think it's more than that. This show has some of the most fun, relateable, and complex characters out of any of the superhero cartoons I've seen. There's always a balance between comedy, emotion, theme, and action that I think a lot of other shows lack. Even if those other shows have better plot, Teen Titans always comes off as the most complete package to me. I don't have as much nosgalgia for the show, but I do have a deep respect and a lot of positive emotions towards it. Thank you for giving this show the time it deserves, and I look forword to seeing more from you in the future.

When ATLA was first airing, I think I was around 7-8. I never watched it because I didn’t think it would be a show I’d enjoy. As I moved into my teens, I caught a time when it was the only thing on TV at the moment and just watched an episode somewhere in the middle of the series. It left me wanting more so much that I watched the series in the next serial marathon that Nicktoons put out. The one with the blurbs that poppped up by the creators, talking about behind the scenes. I can say definitely, to this day, that show is 100% as great as I remember it from back then.

We as a comunity need to do something because cartoon network will not do anything if we don't make them do it. I don't really know how we could do it but the only thing I can say is: Lowart I agree with you that this was a rushed season and it could have been done better, but this season wasn't even supposed to be the end. Cartoon Network canceled the show because of merch problems, but now in 2018 WE the audience can go to thoes large corporations and say to them "finish the thing you haven't finished" just like with the reboot of samurai jack. If you read this thank you for doing this series and remind me that even if this show had flaws it was still really enjoiable, I really look forward to your next video.

Honestly man, when the first video in the series found it's way into my recommended, I was conflicted on your analysis. I really loved the idea, the question it posed. but I want sure about the way you went about it. the pacing, some of the points you made, and even your voice made me uneasy. I honestly never would of thought it would go this far. I spent this summer growing with you. From video to video I could see your progress. I could feel how much passion, time and energy you put into this series. It was the type of creative process I couldn't wait to see play out. This series has in some odd way, become an important part of my summer, and I'm so glad you mad these and I got to be apart of this. I love that you'll answer fans concerns, it makes me feel like you'll actually read my comment, and know that your doing some good for someone out there. honestly these videos are as important to me, as teen titans itself. It allowed me to want to go back and watch this series in between videos, and see it in a different light. I would like to thank you for that. You have certainly gain a fan. p.s. Cant wait for Avatar

Despite all the flaws that you found, or perceive, you ascribe to the series an emotional complexity that many couldn't or don't want to imagine in an animated series, or something done "just for kids." I was over 30 when it premiered, and I've always thought it was brilliant. Now, I think it's even more brilliant.

The question of whether Teen Titans is as great as I remember is an interesting one. To really understand this question, I have to understand what I thought was great as a child. When I was a kid, I enjoyed the contrast of the show. The darkness (compared to other kids shows) appealed to my juvenile sense of edge. I genuinely felt cool for getting to watch something that seemed more adult than was meant for me. On the other hand, the creative and humorous use of animation and dialogue appealed to my juvenile sense of comedy. My perception that these elements could reside harmoniously in one show was what really blew my mind as a kid. As a teenager in high school I re-watched the show and became very invested in the characters themselves. I delved much more into the emotional aspects of the show and from that standpoint, I thought it was an even better show than I remembered. As an adult, I feel the show has weakened in some areas but grown in others. I'm no longer as enthralled by the mystery of Slade or the terror of Trigon. The primary villains in the show have been thoroughly demystified for me. On the other hand, I have found my love for the animation, the jokes, and the cast of heroes has only grown with time. I liken it to meeting an old friend who I haven't seen in a long time. I've heard the jokes that we'll tell each other a million times over, but they've only become funnier with time. I know how they'll react to a situation, but I'm not bored of it, in fact it gives me hope to see some consistency in a life of constant change. So, in one sense I think it's both a lesser and a greater show than I remember. If we take the show into a meta-context, my opinion of it should not change but it's so hard to not judge it based on it's peers. Teen Titans remains, in my adult view, as superior to the vast majority of kids shows that exist, and superior to all of those I watched when I was a kid. However, some shows like Steven Universe have shown me that a kids show can address emotions on a far more complex level than Teen Titans. These outside connections to the show lead me to realize that my estimation of a show can change not only with how I grow through everyday life, but how other shows I've watched have changed me. Because of this, I can't say it's the same kind of great that I thought it was as a kid but, honestly, if I still did, that would paradoxically lower my estimation of the show. In conclusion, all of this means I view the show as a different kind of great than I thought of it as a kid, and that those two definitions of great are merely incompatible. Since my values changed, I honestly can't say that it is greater now or then. However, I can say that I enjoy the show as much, if not more than I did then, because despite it's faults that I see clearly now, I still love it. P.S. I'd like to thank you for this thought-provoking series. I sincerely enjoyed your analysis and look forward to watching your next major series.

Gotta say man, I love your videos. I study film at college myself, and it's refreshing to see a KZfaqr that actually understands critical thinking, as well as narrative storytelling, theme, and visual storytelling in a qualitative way. Even when I don't agree with you about things, I always understand where you're coming from, and think your point stands. I really loved your FMA comparative videos, as FMA 2003 is my favorite television show, but I'm glad you're addressing things that are more in the pop culture in a way that is easily accessible to those who DON'T usually think critically about media. I think the wholly thoughtful and unpretentious approach that you have will make it easier for the average consumer to think more deeply about why they like what they like, and lead to more meaningful discussions on narrative media in general. I know making the FMA vids must be very time consuming, but I'm really looking forward to when you get on that again. Excited to see whatever you discuss next (EDIT: It's Avatar, really pumped!!)

For me personally, I can't help but feel mixed on the series. At it's core, Teen Titans was/is a remarkable gem to sit down and watch. The character dynamics, the animation, and the very real and hard hitting ideas sprinkled in between. I also admire how ambitious the creators were because to me, it shows just how much they cared about the material they were working with. Where is falls short is of course, execution in some departments. Here's to hoping Season 6 will be made and fix some of the issues but overall, it felt like an unsatisfying end to something that I grew attached to when I was younger. Nonetheless, I can not commend you enough for your thorough breakdown of the series. Your Teen Titans analysis is probably the only episodic series on KZfaq that I've been hyped for from start to finish and it's honestly remarkable how well you did. I will definitely stick around for future series of your's and I wish you the best of luck in whatever you create!

I am a 22 year old adult, and i really hope the OG teen titans would have a reboot as it taught some of life lessons that i didn't learnt in school, something which current animated series are lacking, maybe the currents script writers are just focused on how make a pun out of everything and how stupid they can make a character to be, so it totally useless for current kids

Congrats on such a phenomenal series. You clearly put a lot of love and passion into it,and it was quite refreshing to see something of this nature on Teen Titans In regards to the Shows Overall Quality find it good but severely outclassed. Teen Titans has the blessing and curse of being part of DC Animated TV Shows which tend to have a balance of material kids can appreciate and material for the adults to dig into(much like Avatar or any beloved Cartoon).In this case,Teen Titans is competing with the DCAU and Young Justice for me,and I cant say it is better than any of those shows and I find other DC Show to be vastly better than what Teen Titans has to offer for me. Like if I compare what I find to be the pinnacle of the show in quality:Nevermore and Haunted in particular,I dont think it surpasses something like Old Wounds or For The Man Who Has Everything

I have to agree with you on that. I recall Teen Titans and Justice League/Justice League Unlimited airing at the same time. Even as a child I could see how a far better Justice League was. The best Teen Titan arcs just paled in comparison to JLU’s Cadmus arc imo.

No way, Teen Titans was vastly more popular than Justice League or JLU. Check out the Red Arrow's channel, they did a survey on what DC fans (24,000 votes) thought was the best DC animated series and it turns out that Young Justice (40%) and Teen Titans (37%) were by far the two most popular series. Justice League and JLU by comparison only earned 8% of the votes. No other DC animated series earned more than 10%. My biggest issue with Justice League/JLU was that other than Batman and maybe the Flash, I just didn't find the characters to be as likable.
@kingd3398
@kingd3398 5 жыл бұрын
@@KB-vd8wq Okay,Nice Info but I do not base my opinions on what the vast majority think is good or not. I watch the shows myself and then form my own opinion. I found the characters of the Justice League to be incredibly likable with standouts being Superman, Batman, Flash, and Wonder Woman. JL and JLU were just far better than Teen Titans for me,and was also far more consistent in terms of quality. Same thing goes for Batman the Animated Series,Superman the Animated Series,and Batman Beyond
@KB-vd8wq
@KB-vd8wq 5 жыл бұрын
I'll agree with your point about Justice League being more consistent because Teen Titans had a weird range of variability in its episodes, I love the show overall, but even I can think of several episodes that I'd never care to see more than once. That being said, I still think it's the better show overall just for the individual character arcs; five seasons each dedicated to a main character (minus Starfire) and just the amount of character development that each one got really made each of them more relatable and likable in my opinion. But it's okay, there was another survey on the same channel that asked what people thought was the best DC film to come out recently and I couldn't believe that Wonder Woman got over 50% of the votes because I really did not like that movie. I voted for Man of Steel but it only got like 11% of the votes I think, so I guess I'm in the minority on that one. So I applaud you for sticking to what you see yourself and not just going with the status quo.
