Today we will be doing a triple test comparing the ls stock cam vs stage 1 and stage 3 cams in both idle quality and sound. People really love these types of things so let me know in the comments below if you would like to see other videos comparing cam shafts to the stock engine. The stock ls truck cam is pretty mild by comparison. Although the cam is much larger than any of the old school smallblocks, it is by no means, a large cam adding almost 100 thousandths of lift can make a really huge difference but how much more does duration play a roll when doing a cam swap. the cams in question are the btr stage 1 v2 truck cam, the btr stage 3 v2 truck cam and the stock truck cam. let me know which one is your favorite on the comments below! we will not be testing out the truck norris or the stage 2 cam simply because we dont have them but maybe in the future we might!

This is the last part of building your own holley carb for high power. This has been a 3 part series based around the entire premise that you can make any power that you want to make if you make the right choices when it comes to building your own holley carb. In the next video that I make about carbs I will be sharing what I ultimately decided on using for my e85 turbo build. This series of videos will show you that any regular guy can take a stock used carb and use used parts to make it perform the way it needs to perform for his build. In future videos I will show you guys how to make the nessesary changes to be able to tune a holley. everything from adjusting the idle all the way to adjusting the secondary power enrichment circuit. Tuning is based on a triangle and the better your tune is down low, the easier it will be to tune up top.

After A long while I have put the most cohesive method of setting up the idle on your holley carb. Setting the idle mixture screws and getting your engine to run clean without having to buy any special tools. In this video I manage to set up the idle in less than 15 mins and also do it quickly and easily. As of right now, the holley carb on the 318 duster is perfectly set up in both idle mixture and idle speed. The carburetor in question is a DEMON 625, an older barry grant holley copy before holley bought out DEMON. It took a little bit of work, but I've got this set up perfectly.
Tuning Holley carbs are probably the most widely used carb is all of automotive history. The Holley 4 barrel is a staple among racers and cruiser a like but too few people really understand what goes on inside their Holley carb and too many decide to ditch the old carb in favor of a new one. I am here to share 5 secrets you can employ TODAY to get that Holley nice and tuned and running better than ever in true DIY fashion. I'm put to work these 5 secretes to get my Carb ls going so these are definitely something you need to keep in mind. Tuning a holley carb is what separates the boys from the racers. Depending on how well this video does, I'll be breaking up and going into full detail of what goes on specifically in the different circuits as well so stay tuned!
How to set idle on a holley and other such questions are answered! Holley carb wont idle? Car wont idle? Holley carb runs rich? Holley carb wont start hot? All these questions AND MORE will be answered TODAY. too many people have no idea how the holley idle and transition circuit work on a holley carb. too many people belong to the set it and forget it line of thinking when it comes to out of the box carbs and not too many really know whats going on and decide to just give the carb a bad rap. Well, today we are going into an in depth tutorial and explaining on how these systems work and how you can get more out of your carburetor, maybe even pull up a few MPGs while you are at it!
Holley Carb Running Rich? Watch This! | Holley Carburetor Secrets | Holley Carb Tuning |
We are back at it again to bring you another holley tuning video! This weeks video will talk about tuning a holley carb but without any fancy tools. I'll be showing you guys how to tune a holley carburetor by only listening to the exhaust note. If you guys can master this skill. You will know what to look for when you run into issues in the future. This is somewhat of a longer video but it was super important that I bring out as much tuning info to light as I can so that way you guys can get back

Finaallllyyyy, Nightwrencher has come back to KZfaq. I'd honestly go with the turbo cam version vs the truck cam. A stage 2 turbo cam sounds meaner than the stage 3 truck and still delivers the performance you need and want. The stage 3 turbo cam is when you want to be set on kill and bend and or break rods🤣🤣
@NightWrencher
@NightWrencher 2 жыл бұрын
Well actually, you may not believe me but, more aggresive cams actually lower cylinder pressures because they bleed off air during the overlap cycle which is why you lose so much torque at the lower rpms but you gain it back up on top because the added duration gives the engine more time to fill the cylinder. A cam isnt gonna bend rods 🤣 too much ignition timing and boost will bend rods.
@infamousnova
@infamousnova 2 жыл бұрын
@@NightWrencher I believe you, that's one of the tricks to running pump gas and 11:1 compression. Want the rods to survive, risk losing! Keep timing low until peak tq. 😌 on kill is all I know

For torque I like adding 10-12 deg duration no more wether its a car....or heavy truck. Picking a cam for lope is the wrong way...its sound at idle doesnt mean much if its a dog. Regear it get more converter.

Hey like the video, I have a stage 3 btr cam , it has significant valvetrain noise really bothers me, great oil pressure, fresh engine. Have checked preload and went ahead and tried longer and shorter pushrods, neither quited it down, upgraded trunion bearings, still lots of valvtain noise, any suggestions?

LS engines arent really known for valve train noise at all. They tend to run really smooth. What valve springs and lifters are you using?

I’m building a 6.0 lq9 30 over forged pistons from summit stock rods stock crank Gonna be going in a 95 Chevy single cab. What cam should I run? I wanna add boost later in the build and be around 850-900 hp
@NightWrencher
@NightWrencher Ай бұрын
stock 6.0 makes about 320whp or about 380 at the crank. At 15 lbs of boost you'll make about 640whp or about 860 at the crank. Swap to 799/LS1/LS6 heads for more compression, You dont need a super crazy cam to get you to 400whp so pick one that sounds good to you and put about 18lbs down with the turbo. The block can take it.

Will the stage 1 cam need to be tuned? If it doesn’t will it pass a clean smog in California, rebuilding engine and thinking of putting stage 1 cam but don’t want to have to worry about doing a dirty smog. thank you in advanced
@NightWrencher

Any camshaft with require a tune and thus fail a clean smog test. The PCM with read misfires at idle and the check engine light will turn on. I do not recommend replacing your cam if you plan to clean smog your vehicle

Its should work fine as long as you install the matching springs for it. If you install it without the right springs, the valves will float

always change springs, they are usually tired and cant deal with increased ramp rates of aftermarket cams Too many chance it/cheap out, say "runs fine saved $ etc" but they dont know any better . Springs are cheap do it once, do it right

Great idea for the video but coming straight out of the manifolds instead of a cheap exhaust shop exhaust and a Flowmaster muffler like the majority of trucks on the street. Anything straight manifold especially when it gets off cold idle is gonna sound choppy lol. The stage 1 cam sounded best to me though.

@gordocarbo I have a truck norris cam in my 4.8 and I think it may be too much cam for it as well. Dyno comparisons from Richard holdener show that the truck norris is only about 9hp less than a btr stage 4. I thought it was a stage 1.5 cam when ordering
@NightWrencher
@NightWrencher 3 ай бұрын
The truck norris is a 112/22X which "should" put it somewhere between a stage 2 and stage 2.5 type of truck cam but with a 107 LSA thats gonna kill bottom end torque while adding the chop

How did you pull the cam out without pulling the heads and lifters because I know the lifters would have been sitting on the cam lobe's
@NightWrencher
@NightWrencher 5 ай бұрын
You can pull the pushrods and spin the cam, that locks the lifters into the tray. Then stick wooden dowels in the 2 holes in the block to keep the lifters up when you pull the cam.

for this video, yes, all stock. We installed springs afterward. You should always upgrade the springs. Even if the cam says no springs required, you will get valve float above 5500 rpm. If you don't care about that, you can just install them as is but you could hurt something if you stay on the high revs too long.
