You will find nothing remotely near it. This has literally made me weep since my Grandmother and I saw him sing it in 1994. Ever since in those almost 22 years I bathe in cherished memory for a few minutes rather than in the volatility that surrounds me daily. I love this version completely.

Global Currency Reset~He was amazing! NOT as a competition, just an addition for those impressed by long notes like the last one he held here: Barbra Streisand holds the last note of her version of "Let our garden grow" for 19 seconds. It was caught on 'tape' b/c the producer of that album(that never got released)was too far from Barbra and set up a camera so that he could conduct/produce/see her as he conducted the orchestra too. Check it out if you like.

Global Currency Reset lol he holds any note longer the. Any opera singer who has lived does not disrespect there abilities as opera singers just that non can beat me Pavarotti in the feeling or range and length of breath he gave to his performance it's an honor to hear it I'm sorry but others are better at different rangesin opera but with Pavarotti is no equal in his range of voice for what he sings if anyone can match it and make me feel what he has thenyoull still never be Pavarotti you shall be yourself and applauded

Hi Tony! I'm interested in religion and science, so your comment is very intriguing. After some reflection, it doesn't seem clear that evolution and genetics would necessarily disprove the existence of a god, but maybe I'm missing something. As he aged those "2:40" and "5:59" notes/moments became more and more...the word escapes me...desperate. Not in a musical or ability sense, but in the sense that I felt he wanted his last possible breath of air, the final molecule of life/song/energy/breath set free in this life and world. This performance was powerful. His final performance was complete; he left every last ounce of himself.

My brother was studying at London's Royal College of Music in the 1970's, and he and I somehow got passes to attend a recording session in a church ( I forget which ) of TURANDOT - featuring Joan Sutherland and conducted by Zubin Mehta. ( In those days Pavarotti was the thin, clean-shaven one, and Mehta was bearded and somewhat rotund. ) Most fortunately, we happened to be present on the evening when the scene including 'Nessun Dorma' was recorded. For those who haven't heard this version, get the box set! Still, in my opinion, Pavarotti's finest performance of the aria.

I think these are the best two performances of this Aria that were ever recorded. These, not his performances from decades later, were the ultimate performances of this aria.. Pavarotti was definitely the best in the world, but in later decades he could not quite match the passion, the force, the energy and stamina of this performance. Singing is partly athletic, and though world class athletes continue to refine their skill, their power eventually declines with the decades.
