The saddest part was the fact that Vhagar killed her former rider's wife and true love's dragon: Meleys. And that Daemon killed his father and late wife's dragon

My theory is that they do form bonds with each other, but their strongest bond is with their rider, to the point where their rider’s will can override their own after a certain point.

They can form bonds with eachother as shown with Vermithor and Silverwing. Jahaerys and Alisanne were in love, and their dragons also became extremely close and stayed close after their riders deaths. After Vermithor died, Silverwing arrived at the scene riderless and tried to nudge Vermithor awake and tried to help him fly. When she realised that Vermithor wouldn't wake up, she flew off into the Reach alone and (as far as we know) never took another rider.

Don't worry an Aegon's Conquest prequel series is in the works

I doubt she was an egg layer, she was a vicious killer, not a mother. Her choices of riders are a testament to that.

@@DavidLightbringer Probably had to do with the diminishing power since the Doom. The red comet and sacrificing the Maegi and Drogo, only death can pay for life. These factors aligned to bring the 3 hatchlings alive out of stone. The Century of Blood probably has something to do with it. We know the Dornish could kill dragons, they learned it from someone, mostly like Ghiscari descendants. The Rhoynar could kill dragons. Gaemon, Aelyx, Aegon (Gaemon's son), Aerion, Baelon, Daemion, Aerys. All of these probably were riders and their sisters/wives. A century of war and 3 dragons remained. With the dance of the dragons 23 dragons get diminished to 4 in 2 years.

Btw, could also be Laena who goes through this, but personally I'd prefer Aemond because that immediately allows the Dance to be set up. That is going off of the assumption though that the first season will mostly take part shortly before the Dance just with copious flashbacks in it. If it truly takes place from before 120 to 129 though (with no flashbacks) then obviously this couldn't be the first scene with dragons and Aemond at the same time. But it being either would still be pretty cool, imo.

well there are a couple of scenes where people who are rivals land their dragons in the same area and the dragons hiss and snap at each other... they def pick up the mood of their rider

It’s a NO TRUE SCOTSMAN proposition. A dragonrider is a Targ. A ship’s captain is a Valaryon.

Well at the least, they have Targ genes from the mother of Valaena, possibly again later on (I forget)

I really liked the idea of the Velaryons being a family of dragon riders who lost control their dragons generations before the Tragaryens followed them west, with Cannibal being the last of the feral descendants of their mounts. However, I have since some to prefer the idea that Cannibal was from a brood of feral Celtigar dragons instead. A Velaryon Dragon would likely recognize the descendants of Velaena Velaryon or their dragons as kin, while a Celtigar dragon would have no blood ties to them and would always seen them as rivals. It is frankly suspicious that the Targaryens never agreed to intermarry with the Celtigars despite them being a fellow Valyrian family like the Velaryons. They tried to arrange marriage alliances, but the Targaryens always refused them. It is stated that the Velaryons were allies of the Targaryens before either family left the capital of the Freehold, but nothing is said of any friendly relations between the Targaryens and the Celtigars. The Celtigars are sworn vassals of Dragonstone before the Conquest, but I like to think their relationship was like that of the Boltons to the Starks, or the Yronwoods to the Martells, or the Freys to the Tullys. One of Aegon the Conqueror's first acts after landing was to undermine the Celtigar clams to Crackclaw Point, promising they would never need to pay taxes or fealty to a house they considered oppressive but would be sworn directly to the Targaryen king. Celtigars have tried to get Targaryens to marry their daughters, but there is no record of the two families every intermarrying. It is also worth noting that the Celtigars are the one Valyrian family that is said to possess a magical horn. It is said to summon Krakens, but I suspect it may actually be Dragonbinder or a similar sorcerous horn they used to control their dragon. Perhaps the Targaryens preferred to rely on establish a more intimate personal relationship between dragon and rider, which is harder to establish but in the long run more reliable than using blood magic to bind the beast to their will. The Celtigars may have been more typical of Valyrians, being cruel conquerors, slavers, and blood mages.

@@magister343 I think the relationship is more allong the lines of owner-capatin-crew. that is, the Targs are the bosses, the Velaryons are the captains of the boats, and the the Celtagars are of the families that reef the sails and pull the oars.
