Did this war just start by accident? Who was responsible? Why couldn't these dragonriders control their dragons? Was it like this in A Song of Ice and Fire?

I love that they made Luke's death unintentional. This incident will earn Aemond a reputation that would be feared and hated for the rest of the story, and the fact that it all stemmed from a cruel joke gone horribly wrong adds a lot of depth to his character. I 100% agree. Yes, people may be angry and feel that it takes away some of aemonds villainous Mystique, but they needn't worry, he has many more war crimes to commit that he truly won't feel bad about. Quite brilliant to use that opportunity to expand more on the nature of dragons and the bonds they have with their Riders. It perfectly Illustrated that just because you can bond with a dragon does not by any means mean that it ever needs to listen to you if it truly doesn't want to

thank you!!! as much as I like David’s interpretation of Aemon’s intentions I really prefer the version where it was all an accident…which if it was, would probably make Aemon feel terrible (because he just murdered his cousin or whatever in cold blood, leaving Luke to have a horrible and painful death). I think it’s a more humanizing moment for Aemon. like that Aemon is the kind of person who will be the worst all the time, really have it out for his younger cousin and want to bully and scare Luke… and still be human enough to feel a deep regret for the horrific murder of a young boy who’s his family AND will also cause a massive war. just because Aemon’s reaction is not emotional doesn’t mean he’s not internally having a heart attack because a family member he’s known pretty well just died in front of him

I was wondering if Aemond really did want to take his eye, or if he just wanted to cruelly tease him/scare him like how he felt he was teased/shunned as a boy. But it got out of hand, and he didn't consider the fact that Vhaghar is literally the only war dragon to exist, so she doesn't fuck around. It's going to be interesting to see how Aemond claiming it was intentional rather than admitting he lost control of Vhagar will have emotional backlash for him later, especially with B&C. I liked that despite Aemond obviously believing himself to be intelligent and mature - especially when he compares himself to his brother/nephews - Luke's death served to show that Aemond is still very much a kid in many ways, giving in to his emotions, and has a lot to learn. As you said, he's never been in combat or war, has never killed anyone, and is now saddled with the label of kinslayer for life because he let his emotions get the better of him.

I do wonder how they will show us the B&C event now going forward. Remember Misaria has her own reasons to seek personal revenge thanks to Larys burning her home. Considering she wanted the child fighting rings to be closed, if Otto did not follow through, it would provoke her to take one if their children in revenge. Daemon may not have ordered it.
@mellowenglishgal
@mellowenglishgal Жыл бұрын
@@hobbesthecat6868 That’s my thought, too. I even wondered whether Larys Strong could be involved. We only know that Daemon and Rhaenyra ordered B&C because…well, because the history says so. But there are a lot of people who would have motive or could benefit from B&C - vengeance for Mysaria, Larys Strong using the chaos to his advantage. I think Mysaria would be an interesting one - she’s proving to Otto that the nobles only have power as long as the small-folk tolerate them to have power, and no amount of dragons or guards can protect them if the small folk decide to do something about them.

I assume Baratheons didn't have a very nice image of Rheanyra all because of that unfortunate event when she was scouting for her future husband. Yes, there are multiple scenes, especially when Rhaenyra was younger, that showed she didn't care much about what the commoners thought of her, or even that much about what the lords thought of her. She just assumed they all would accept her and it didn't matter much if they didn't. Her just sending a message (attached to a prince and a dragon, but still) to the Baratheons with no offers continues to show her naivete about how no one should expect anything from her, but that they still should be loyal to her because she's the rightful heir.

I actually really liked the Viewpoint they took on this incident. Some people may be angry because they feel it will take away some of his (Aemond's) villainous Mystique. But not only did they take that opportunity to expand on the nature of the bond between Riders and their dragons, it also adds quite a bit of fierceness and personality to vagar, and showing us that dragons are nobody's pets or slaves, while also remaining true to the theme of the story, that essential weapons of mass destruction can't really be controlled. You can't tee a predator up for a kill like that and expect them not to take their shot, and I think the episode fully embodied the tragedy of what the dance of dragons is all about. @@tickledeggz I have a large breed dog that like to lunge at people while I'm walking, not out of aggression but because he's easily excitable and loves people looking for a pat. He's well-trained, went to puppy school, follows all commands immediately first time without hesitation, socialises with other people/animals regularly and knows that he's not supposed to jump, won't do so at home or when he's being pet-sitted. Every time he does, he never makes physical contact, I'll have both hands firmly holding the lead tight preventing any actual movement and because of his size and the sudden movement he'll spook people who don't know dog body language and often confuse it for aggression. There's nothing (that I've been able to find even with consultation from experts, for his breed as its a known behavioural issue they have) I can do except keep the lead taut and say "sorry, he's trying to be friendly." There are so many shitty dog owners out there (I've rescued dogs from neglectful owners in the past) but I wouldn't assume just because the dog is having a ratbag moment or has a bad habit, it's a failure on behalf of the dog's owner.

What happen years ago is irrelevant to right now. That shit was immature as hell. No one that careless and so emotionlly charged needs to be on a damn dragon. Much less one the size of Vhagar. However, it is nice to see the decent of a character like Aaemon because it's relatable. Even with everything that's coming in future seasons, I'm mostly curious as to what Aemond will do after this. Will he claim that he killed Luke on purpose, or will he break down and admit he lost control over Vhagar only to have Otto convince him to say it was on purpose? Remember that Aemond is, at most, seveteen years old. He's a teenager who can't control the biggest killing maschine in the world and now everyone will see him as a kinslayer who *finally* started the war.

The war has already been started once Aegon II was crowned in the Dragon Pit. Lucaerys and Arrax’s murder however, is the catalyst that Rhaenyra needs to push her to actually want to fight instead of trying to go diplomatic route or waiting to commission all her allies; remember, she told the Black Council that she wanted to know who her Bannerman were before she sends them to fight. I read the scene differently than most. I refuse to think that Aemond is so naive that he thinks he can just bully Lucerys and Arrax with Vhagar. For me, everything in the scene is about dragon control. Aemond clearly wants to hurt Lucerys, he thirsts for revenge. In the dragon chase, at first he feels in control, with a dragon tens of times bigger than his opponent's. He even monologues in the rain: the big baddie speech. And yet, when Arrax fires at Vhagar, she goes naturally berserk. She starts moving her neck frantically and changing direction. Picture a mechanical bull... Now, picture one in the air, and the size of Vhagar. That's the kind of fear that overcomes Aemond. He might just fall. And then, he has witnessed the kind of power she really is. With one bite, Vhagar obliterated an adult dragon, already fit for riding. And she didn't even shoot fire, not once. That is the issue here. Aemond is scared because for the first time he is seeing Vhagar for what she is: not a challenge as he thought when he was using, and tamed her since she was relatively inviting. Now, Vhagar is a thing he has to rein in, only it is impossible. She is neither a vehicle, nor a weapon to be used at will: she is a beast, a genuine monster, one which he can at most direct, but in reality is the true master of her fights.

I love this discussion! I have not read the books but I like this Aemond. I think he's reckless, aggressive, arrogant and doesn't think things through. So no, he didn't want Luke dead, then he couldn't keep tormenting him. But I makes sense to me that he wouldn't have thought about how Luke's death was the only possible outcome of that chase. I think there might be a small amount of remorse that goes beyond the realization that he's a kinslayer and that he started a war. I can't imagine him not having complex feelings about a nephew close to his age. If that nephew bullied him first as younger children. Most of those feelings are hate, of course, but probably not all of them. I did want to leave one note. While the sentiment is poetic enough that it's worth having in the story. Real horses also often turn into pressure. A whip they'll probably move away from but steady pressure they lean into. I was taught it's because if a wolf has grabbed you, pulling away will cause more damage than leaning in until the wolf lets go.
@yensid4294
@yensid4294 Жыл бұрын
That's interesting. I was told that stallions control their herds (basically a harem plus colts) by biting & physical domination like side pushing & that's what human riders emulate with spurs, leg pressure & working the reins (they don't actually whip the horses & when whips are used it never breaks the skin & often it's the sound of the CRACK that the animal responds to.)
@squeezlepop
@squeezlepop Жыл бұрын
@@yensid4294 Not exactly. Stallions are less in charge than the lead mare and they form loose hierarchies that involve some nipping and force. There are many horse training philosophies. Most common ones do emulate how horses communicate with each other to some degree. But there is a growing movement for positive reinforcement based training that is getting good results. The most common methods mix types behavior shaping, but focus heavily on making the wrong thing uncomfortable to various degrees and so the reward is the removal of that discomfort. This can be as light as pressing on their side and removing your hand as soon as they shift their weight away (even light pressure is a bit annoying). To more severe with whips or a spur. Most of us do, also, praise and actively reward as well with voice, petting, and/or treats. Whip use is complicated and can be controversial. I think most horse people use them at a level that ranges from a firm tap that doesn't really hurt but let's you place the pressure to something that does sting. Others are not so judicious and very obviously abuse their horses. But it's not really just the noise unless you're talking about snapping a lunge whip without touching the horse. I've never met someone that uses bull whips at all. Just lunge whips, crops, and dressage whips. Edited to add: leg and rein pressure is really just the cues we train horses to respond to rather than being somehow natural.

I actually disagree that Aegon would not have demonstrated better control over Sunfyre than Aemond did over Vhagar and here is why. Vhagar is an old dragon and has bonded with many riders over her lifespan. Sunfyre is a younger and has never bonded with anyone else. In addition to this, in episode 6, the dragonkeepers explicitly state that Aegon has in fact mastered complete control over Sunfyre, this was in the dragonpit scene when Jacaerys was training Vermax
