I did some measurements and reverse engineering on these myself. I've seriesed up 3 of these before as well. It works as long as you never leave them open-circuited. You probably killed them just from that. Just dont expect them to work for a long time, no matter what you do. All components in there are severely overloaded in many ways in normal use. The components are: 3x 1600V 8.2nF film capacitors (in series, overloaded from 4.8kV onward, across the output) 2x 8kV 100pF ceramic capacitors 3x diodes type "HV-T70A" 1x discharge resistor, roughly 735Mohms (across the output) The capacitors and diodes form a voltage multiplier fed by a small ferrite transformer without diodes in the transformer. The discharge resistor doesnt limit the voltage a lot, so it easily overcharges the output capacitors over the 4.8kV and they fail after a short time, usually short-circuit. Also, there are several variants of this which draw very different amounts of current at the same input voltage, so dont blindly apply a voltage to them. The sellers dont know what they are selling to you either. I would recommend setting a 3V limit and a 2A limit when you first power them, you can increase both a little depending on how much it draws. Probably dont go over 2.5 - 3 A and make sure they are always able to arc at the output, BTW, you shouldnt be paying much over 2$ for one.

Given the output goes thru a voltage multiplier, perfectly sensible to connect them in parallel, as the output already has diodes to prevent backflow.

Dear Mr Ludic: I think the reason you didn't have success with 3 units in series is a PHASING problem. When you energized just one unit, it made a buzzing/crackling sound at the spark gap between the wires. It seems it was not pure DC but some kind of pulsating DC. But if it is pure sine-wave AC, it is all the more a reason to have proper phasing, so the waves don't cancell each other. If an oscilliscope is available, pairs of inverters should be placed on the 2 traces to synchronize the waves. My gut feeling is that the output of these cheap Chinese inverters is some kind of noisy complex waveform. Maybe 3 filter capacitors to smooth out the DC, plus polarity checks on all 3 inverters to make sure you are connecting positive to negative in all series connections will create a NICE big arc with 3 inverters in series.

Yea ive had 2 in series for years and still works fine.. you cant power them all with a single source though.. because the voltage output from one will be shorted out internally. The way i wired it was two hooked in series with the power in going to each unit(7v +\- to one unit and +\- going to the other unit. Then you take the output leads and connect those in series how you had it.. is like how you wire a dual mot setup..

I just rewatched the video. When you seriesed them, did you determine which terminals are positive and negative? You didnt mention it. If you didnt, it wouldnt surprise me that they failed immediately. You can determine polarity with gas discharge tubes where only one end will glow, or use a resistor to load the circuit and drop the voltage, or of course with the high voltage probe.

As you mentioned, the output of the HV modules is a high frequency DC. I bet the 'three in series' did not spark because one or two were out of phase. There is an easy way to determine the "+"and "-" HV outputs: Just connect to a capacitor bank and observe the polarity in which the banks are charged--Then mark the HV module output wire(s) with the "+" or "-" label. Have you tried this yet?

Add a capacitor on the output for each module. For example a 20kV 10nF capacitor. Then try connect in series. The problem is that the pulsing is not synchronized between the modules.

Look the output has polarities and you need to connect them in series in the right order or else the voltage will be substracted OBVIOUSLY.. so please make sure to do that and then try it.. you'll get gigantic hot arcs like i did.. i not only connected them in series but I also connect many of such series connected networks in parallel to get high voltage high current which is obviously dangerous but fun, I melted half of the wire tips because of such high current, I stopped the experiment cuz the molten metals were splashing like water everywhere with each arc

You can make a series circuit from this. Say when you supply 5V to a module, the out terminals will be 15k and 0V. When you connect them together, you will short 5kV with 0V from another module. Therefore you will not get 15V*3 kV. You at most is to get 15kV if you are lucky.

In series, you need to use isolated power (batteries) for each one, you don't want to share any of the input wiring. I'm curious if the input power leads have a DC path to the output HV leads, or if both output HV wires are completely isolated from the input.

I wired 15 of these in parallel, it was quite dangerous lol. The tips of the electrodes erode a little bit with each spark, I suspect it would only take one to put you on the ground🤣. I also suspect it would only take one zap across the chest to _keep_ you on the ground...💀 It also shit the bed after a few minutes of use🤣. I have to tear it apart and see if one of them is shorted or if I fried the whole bunch lol.
