Lots of you have been asking my opinion on the new Lumix S1
& S1R cameras over the past few months. Well, I've got hold of one to test for the next few weeks, after which I'll be able to tell you what I think, and whether or not I'll be sticking with my G9 and Micro Four Thirds.
Also a huge thank you to Lumix for sponsoring this video. I've been using the G9 and the G85 for a long time now and the stabilisation in them is immense. Find out more here: www.panasonic.com/uk/consumer....

Always enjoy your videos James! I appreciate your honesty when you try out new gear. My Sony @6000 is getting rather worn out from use and I will need to buy a new body soon. As I have rather small hands I'll probably stick to a micro 4/3's because the size and weight are just so much easier for my frequent visits to the outdoors and the often long hours hiking to get the best shots. As always, thanks for being both entertaining and informative. Have a pleasant week!

Hi James! As usual I enjoyed your video. It's a bit off topic but the thing that struck me most watching it was the quality of the footage from your G9! Loved the colours. ☺ I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts about the S1, but I think that no matter how good it is (and I suspect that it will be very good) I won't be interested in getting one because I love the size/weight of the MFT system and the quality I can get from my G9 and G80 are certainly good enough for my needs. (Hope the out of date sun cream didn't let you down.)

Today I found a book called "James Popsys 2018" in my letterbox! Quickly opened the package and greedy start leafing. Hell, there's texts in too. So I quietly started reading the lyrics and looking at the pictures. Repeatedly I laughed out loud, my wife started to look at me suspiciously and finally said: I didn't know that a photo book could be so funny. Thank you James. You made my day!

Interesting thoughts and I too am keen to have a go with one to see how it fares for my work. I love that style tilt screen for filming outwards with the centred axis etc. But of course when filming yourself or framing with the camera backed into a wall, the flip style really shows it’s worth! Out of date sunscreen is still mostly fine to use by the way, it just means they can no longer accurately rate its factor rating. Essentially, you’ll just have to reapply way more frequently. The trouble is knowing just how frequently… Second to that, an often overlooked rating for sunscreen is UVA star rating, rather than SPF (UVB factor) ratings. Look out for that when you buy your replacement bottle!

The fully articulating screen was actually one of the many reasons I switched from Lumix (g85) to Fuji. The screen being so far off-axis from the camera made it impossible for me to frame shots properly. My brain just couldn't get used to it even after months of use, so I was never able to use the tilting screen properly. The X-T2 incidentally has the same kind of screen the S1R does, which I am very happy with.

I noticed the book has been shipped, can't wait to get it... I actually bought a Lumix g7 as a cheap 3rd camera for overhead shots & was surprised at how close the picture is to the Canon right out of the camera. My Sony a6400 actually takes some work to get it to match the other 2. As a beginner, it's nice having 4k to downscale for more options... Hope all is well, have a great weekend...

A chemist boffin asked me years ago if I thought the CEOs of drug companies wore sunscreen. His guess was that they didn’t, and that slathering an oil-based concoction of noxious chemicals on your body does more harm than good. Trick is to have slow, gradual, limited exposure (dyswidt?) over a longer term and then aloe, aloe, aloe. I love my G9, GH5, & Autel EVO.

While it's nice that reviewers give their own opinion, it's sad that almost noone ever gives a thought about how much better such a screen is for everyday shooting pictures with a camera. I LOVE that I can just flip the X-T3 screen up or sideways whenever I want to in the street or nature and that I don't have to flip it out, turn it almost 180 degrees, fumble my neck belt around the screen and completely change how I hold the camera because there is a screen in the way now. If the moment isn't gone by then, take the shot and reverse everything. Yes, I do miss the flip out screen for the 1 selfie in 5000 pictures I take, but I vastly prefer this flip up/sideways screen for the 3000 images I take with a flipped screen. This "not the end of the world" screen mechanic was one of my biggest reasons to give the X-T3 a try after 2 years of MFT/G9 (sadly all highend MFT cameras have a flip out screen). I might be wrong, but I do believe that many who are not youtubers would prefer this mechanic. Would be really sad if manufacturers get influenced too much by all the negative reviews from youtubers in designing their next camera and give it such a clumsy flip out screen IMHO.

James, after seeing the results of your micro four thirds offerings in stills and videos. Why would anyone change to full frame. I am a Fuji user and would happily buy Panasonic or Olympus if my Kit was stolen. You are a great character and an excellent photographer the kit is good if it makes you enjoy your photography and get the results you do. I used Nikon crop sensors and enjoyed them but made the mistake of moving to Nikon full frame and became very bored and also ‘knackered’ lugging it around so switched to Fuji. Happiness returned and my photography improved. Lesson?

There’s great deals on at the moment with the G9 body being only £849 after Panasonic cash back.... no way would I ever leave M4/3 system with its advantages (I need) in a system... 8-18 and 35-100 and that’s me covered for everything I’ll ever need.

Really??....you can't be serious?? I actually LoL'ed... Let's see, starting with the A7RIII, Z7, D850, these 3 themselves are cheaper (and older) and out perform (or are very competitive to) the Lumix DC-S1R...this is Panasonic's flash attempt to jump in the FF mirror-less market...except they missed the mark with their PRICE! ...and are lagging on any REAL INNOVATIVE specs..imo As a Nikon D850 owner (who doesn't shoot video), I would buy a Sony A7RIII before this...even a Z7, but I'm more than happy with my D850...Dynamic Range say's Hello ;)

@@angelvillanueva4518 lol....ummm, ok..so you want a video camera, ohhh...In that case I'll repeat what *better options* are *"on the market for your buck"* Sony A7RIII or A7III, Nikon Z7 and even cheaper the Z6, which has been the winner for FF mirrorless for video specs...because 4K 60fps is over-hyped AND is CROPED on the S1R!! that alone says it all, lol...and most consumers don't need it...let alone the cpu you will need to edit and use 4K 60fps files... Your "best on the market for your buck" theory doesn't make sense..seriously...it's the most expensive and doesn't win at anything it offers in reality. There is ZERO excitement in the camera industry with this release, nobody's mind was blown because it does nothing special and has no innovation in technology. ...and more ;)

Purely out of principle, you've got to stick with M43 really haven't you! I waited as long as I could to sell my G9, hoping to get an S1R but it just came too late, too expensive with too limited and expensive lens selection. So I joined the Sony A7RIII bandwagon (I know, sorry, but not actually sorry) I worry a little bit for Panasonic, from what I understand hardly anyone has bought an S1/S1R and if they release a cheaper S model, they'll kill M43. Stuck between a rock and a hard place...
