It turns out you can crash a server by overloading it with too many satchel entities if the server is not optimized. Please don't be a jerk. Do this on your own server.

Honestly even without crashing, making walls that can't be destroyed and only you can go through is quute enough for griefing to occur

it's worth mentioning that in HL Deathmatch Source, the satchels don't despawn after the player leaves the server, and instead, become solid so not even the player that placed them can go through. considering the game has only a dozen servers, I found one which has been up for many years, in which almost all the spawns are filled with satchel charges, causing players to drop the crowbar and pistol they spawn with, and causing them to get stuck. that server is still up.

In the server that I play on in Sven coop there's an upgradeable ammo regen skill that applies to all. And well people place so many satchels that it becomes a nuke

Did the server really crash, or was it just not able to send you hundreds of satchels in a single packet so your connection timed out?

Good question. When I first did this the server actually went down and I couldn't re-connect to it. When I tried to recreate this scenario with my screen capture on, I could not get the server to crash. There must have been some protections in place. When I tried the third time (in the video) I believe it did crash. However I was able to reconnect. The crates in boot_camp that spawn only when the level first loads were back, after I had previously destroyed them. So I assume this server had some safeguard to reboot itself, which makes sense.

@@lymphoid This might be worth trying on your own hlds to see what happens on the server side. If it's a segfault, there's a good chance this is a security vulnerability and not a mere crash bug!

@@CFSworks 🤔 I don't have much experience with hosting. But if someone investigates this, I would absolutely be interested in hearing more. Could be something worth Valves time to fix. It would probably be an easy fix: have the max satchel counter be associated with the player rather than the weapon object instance (which is being purged everytime you drop the weapon)

I did a similar thing on a Xash3D FWGS server once. I was getting temporary lags whenever I entered the room with the satchels, but the server still seemed to run fine. At some point though it stopped responding and disappeared from the server list. I suppose it got busy sending data about all the satchels and couldn't send any other data. (yes, a reply to an old comment)

I first tought you were gonna crash the server by remote, by exploding the satchels at the time you wanted to crash the server, so the server had to create like a tousands of explosions in a instant, which would crash the server. Anyways, boot_camp is one of my favorite maps in HL1DM. Its so fun to throw 4 satchels at the charger upstairs, then go hide in truck, and wait until unsuspecting player wants to charge their suit which of course will give off a very loud sound that can be heard from the truck, and BOOM that player is now dead.

Thats one of the few benefits you get from Half Life: Source, you can fill an entire room with satchels and its still stable. Until you detonate them of course. Sort of a 50 50 chance depending on how many you spam whether it just crashes the game though. Takes a few thousand from my experience. I went into the scripts and changed ammo types for the satchel to use 9mm bullets instead and raised the cap to 250 at a time

Ah, yes, my favourite bug. I found it when I was 10. Used it to glitch gates at crossfire. You can also break the nuke button with satchels, which will allow you to infinitely spam nukes on the map.

In Opposing Force in multiplayer there's occasions where a player will surround a spawn point in satchels just to grief other players from playing the game.

Crashing servers doubles your risk of being banned. Especially single public server games like fallout 76 (Non-Private Servers), The Division, Elder Scrolls Online, GTA Online and Anthem.

not really anymore hl deathmatch or any half life mutiplayer games are dead so valve didnt mind people who are still playing hl deathmatch, et cetera
