We recently saw how exporting 4K video was when editing in Premiere Pro on the 2020 M1 Mac mini. In this video let's check out how the video editing flow plays back the video preview and how scrubbing the timeline looks.
(Also, I'm working on my autofocus...)
I didn't sample the FULL resolution preview in playback but it played just fine.

@@Heartbeatzofficial exactly! I got the 13” 16gb M1 and so far Ive edited a whole wedding highlights of 7mins with 5 layers of both audio and video, and it performed pretty well. No lag on scrubbing even at full resolution. It will start to slow down once I applied 3 layers of Adjustment layer for color grading and noise reduction

Great review. I just purchased the mini m1 to edit some 4k premiere that was KILLING my imac. The mini seemed to perform well with renders and processing, but it did NOT play the 4k in my timeline, which was layered with 1080 on greenscreen. The BIGGEST concern was that there were FX that did not translate in the BETA version, nor the Rosetta version. I would not recommend anyone that is working in a graphic heavy project, where templates are used. The pro was it played ALL the Canon R5 videos, that no other computer would!

Currently, the Mac Mini M1 only comes with up to 16GB. Would you recommend that over the 3.2GHz i7 with 16B or even 64GB? I also wonder why the M1 16GB is cheaper than the 3.2GHz i7 with 16GB... Thanks for the video and your suggestion.

uestion : I was editing off of my hdd external storage on my m1 mac mini I got last tuesday. Editing and scrubbing was amazing... When it came to exporting it took forever and some of the quality was horrendous... Was this because I was editing off of an hdd drive? Does exporting off of an hdd drive rather than the internal drive make a difference? Just want to know if Im doing something wrong or return the m1 mac mini? I picked up the san Disk extreme ssd drive yesterday... Will this make a difference?

Hi Roger ! thanks for this video ! always awesome ! I do my editing works on Premiere Pro and I've to replace my hold Macbook... I'm hesitating between the M1 or the Macbook Pro 16'' Intel chips... this is great thanks, I just bought a mac mini m1, 16gb and 1tb drive. My current computer is a mid 2012 MacBook pro. I also bought a Toshiba T7 1tb external ssd for additional storage. I have been making YT content for the last 6 months using iMovie. Big question now is to upgrade to Adobe Premier Pro or Final Cut. I think I will go with Final Cut because it is so optimised for the new hardware. Thanks again, Ben

Having a nightmare myself with M1 and Pr. Intel version takes 5hrs to render 45min video. AE Beta won't link to Character Animator Beta- which corrupts my file in Pr Beta. Disaster!!

I'm currently (trying to) edit on my 2015 maxed out MacBook Pro. Obviously, having a lot of problems with 4K even Lightroom has been very slow browsing through photos lately. I'm planning to buy the M1X MBP whenever it comes out however. KZfaq has got me interested in the M1 Mac mini. However, I'm curious if the 16 GB - 512GB would be good enough for editing 4K footage. And if 512 GB / 1TB would make any difference at all.

Hi can I know if there are any major differences between 16GB ram & 8GB ram except rendering time? Can I work smoothly on 8GB version? using quarter resolution. Most of the time I use adobe photoshop/ illustrator (Most of the time I use those same time), InDesign, premier pro. Also, Hope to learn XD, figma. Is that enough 8 GB version for me?

Wear and tear on internal hard drive??? Do you have any tests that prove this? In general the recommendationsa are to leave the OS drive as is, one drive for all footage/assets and one drive for cache. But that's not because of wear and tear just because of I/O access and speeding things up.

hi there...has Premiere pro finally been optimized for the M1? I just prefer Premiere over FCP X. I want to save some cash and get a used M1 mac mini with 16GB ram to edit 4k 30 and some 4k60 and 1080p in XAVC--S at max 200 or less Mbps coming from a Sony FX30. My projects range from 5min to 90 min. If I had cash I would get a Mac Studio base I think...but if this M1 mac mini is able to edit good enough that would do. I don't want to transcode or use proxies. I can use lower playback resolution...I know you must have upgraded by now...just looking for your opinion. I don't want to waste my money! Thanks

Late to the party but hey man! This is exactly what i wanted to see. I was literally about to pull the trigger on a new 8core imac until a few days ago, now i’m feeling more this mac mini. But do i wait?! 😂 if this is from a mini, imagine an imac with a little m1 chip for that extra umph! Haha. Got a sub from me!

I have been a Windows user for my Pc all my life and for everything else I’ve used Apple and for be personally my laptop sucks and I don’t really like Windows anymore after leaving Windows 7 to 10 and then to 11 and I’ve been looking for a new Pc and honestly fully going into the Apple ecosystem and honestly I think I might cave and if you want my specs for my laptop it’s a 16gb i3-8145 with 1tb hdd do you think I should switch and should I get the 8gb or 16gb because I know the ram is not the same as on the intel’s and I’m a KZfaqr looking for a great gaming and editing so what do you think and thank you for this video!

Great video in terms of contents sans the technical issues. New subscriber here! With regard to the artifacting, do you use Quicktime for the screen capture? I encountered the same issue when I use the .mov file I got from Quicktime. I converted the files to .mp4 via HandBreak and then the artifacts/glitching disappeared.

Thanks for doing this literally a week after we asked for it :) amazing. Just wanted to know how 10 bit 422 h264 footage performed in premiere. No one seems to have tested it. I use A7SIII and my 16 inch needs proxies. Wanted to know if it’ll work in Rosetta 2.

Great videos! Thank you! I've experienced artifacting on my QuickTime screen captures as well. So frustrating! it seems to be a Premiere on Mac issue. Cuz the same screen captures from my Mac would play and render fine on my PC with premiere. I know this probably isn't the easiest/best way to fix it, but I found that if you upload the screen capture to KZfaq or Vimeo and then download the converted file, it will play and render perfectly in Premiere on Mac.

If you're not moving closer and farther away to the camera turn off auto focus. Set it and leave it. Otherwise great video.Also, are you using the HomePod Mini for the audio and if so is there any latency? Been thinking of using one for my set up.

Hey, got to your video because I had my M1 mini search running in the background when I was working. Then I heard you talking about editing from external. This is like an un-spoken-about workflow but I do the same. I run FCPX sessions from USB-C SanDisk Extremes - then I can move them between my Intel Mac Mini and my 2016 MBP. Mad convenient. Please allow this to run so you can include FCPX timeline stuff and maybe different drives like the T5 or new LaCie Pro's. Good luck with everything and thanks again

Your link shows it at $299 for 2TB, not "about $500" 😁, this means best option is to just buy that 2TB external for about the same price as upgrading the M1 Macs from 256GB to 512GB. Right? And you're saying that performance is even better using this external SSD? Can you do a write/read speed test to show? What does it say for write speed and read speed to/from this external SSD? Vs what it says on internal SSD? I wonder about 4K60 and beyond (up to 8K) video editing in Final Cut Pro and Davinci Resolve (both which are M1 optimized) using this external SSD and how that performance might compare with internal SSD. This is a big deal iif this external SSD performs better and gives 10x more extra storage that upgrading internal with Apple 😀

Thanks for the quick turnaround review on the timeline scrubbing! This is probably the most useful vid on KZfaq right now for Mac Premiere Pro workflow on the M1. Would also be curious to see if performance differences between the 8gig and 16gig M1 warrant a RAM upgrade

Exporting is 40% faster on the 16G plus you future proofing your purchase by adding the extra RAM. Yes the 8G can do so much due to the SoC of the M1 but 16G will push the Mac in the future run smoother in more demanding tasks/future apps.

Hey great video bro I did a full pr ae fcp and davinci test got similar results. But one thing I think you need to clarify is that the extreme pro although it’s rated 2000mbs it doesn’t run on any Mac including m1 because they are not thunderbolt supported. Only usb3.2 2x2 which sucks. I tested mine on Blackmagic speed test and only got 700mbs on my m1. Great video though keep it up.

What camera is this from? A canon or Sony? I'm trying to do some deep dive research into Sony footage.. Everyone is reviewing with Canon, for which there are hardware accelerators. But I can't get a straight answer anywhere about hardware accelerators for sony (XAVC). Much love

Just received my Mac mini m1 with 16gb unified memory, and started on an edit i've been waiting to do. I'm very sad to say that my computer just simply won't preform as this video shows. I've tried everything I know to boost the performance, but nothing seems to work. A 4K timeline with little to no effects is almost unusable. Roger, any advice?

@@AIP404 I’m afraid not friend. I came from a 2019 MacBook Pro base model, so there is definitely an improvement, but not as I’d hoped. I’m going to speak to Adobe and Apple both to find out if there’s something I could be missing. But, as of right now, timeline scrubbing is laggy, file rendering is very laggy, and simple tasks like transform and mask are basically unusable, taking minutes to render one small movement I made to .025 seconds of my timeline (around 11 frames). I want this computer to be amazing, because it’s my only cost efficient Mac option right now, but I can’t seem to find out why mine is much slower than those shown on KZfaq. Also keep in mind my editing is very elementary compared to most. I’m editing around 1 minute of footage at the moment, with no AE, no plugins, and very simple transitions, etc.. My 4k and 1080 files come from a GH5s and a G9.

Wonderful video. I'm considering selling my 21.5 inch iMac and getting the new M1 Mac Mini. My only concern was the Premiere Pro performance, but your video was really helpful and informative.
