Man, 2 entire days later. It worked on the first try. Glad to say I probably won’t ever attempt this again. I doubted myself a lot through the process but made it through. Thank you.

Haha, I just disassembled my MacBook to realize I will need a Dremel to remove the keyboard. I ordered now one and wait for its arrival. I'm replacing the battery too. But damn this is the hardest notebook repair I ever attempted. Thanks a million for this video! Without it, I would be totally lost. EDIT: The Macbook works again! :D

I could not believe the keyboard was held on with RIVETS. Something about taking a dremel to a $2k laptop doesn't seem right.

It's alright! When you have nothing to lose then you try anything lol - I mean especially if you have no warranty and your keyboard is screwed up and no money to repair it then you attack it with a dremel (sometimes, It's the only option lol )

Don’t dremel! If you force the keyboard out, the rivets just pop out, revealing screw holes. I use a sharpened flat screwdriver to pop out any rivets still in the chassis Then using screws you can fix in the new keyboard. Screw packs for apple unibody keyboards are on eBay for a few pounds and fit perfectly. It’s the same for retina models too.

Thanks a lot! This is great! Are you just glueing in the holes of the rivets? Does that restore the original feeling of stability across the keyboard? What glue are you using?

Yea, it’s hold really well. Just be careful - not to much glue. Actually also the mainboard is holding the whole keyboard construction. Use any strong “5 second glue”. Good luck! :)

This could be nightmare if the new keyboard is defective or one key not working , there Noway you can test the new keyboard without fully installing it unlike the previous Macbooks 2008-2015 that I cloud inspect them very well before even take the board out ,but not on the 2016 or newer that you must disassemble it first then fully install keyboard to test it , really frustration . For years I bought hundreds of keyboards and some they were defective or damaged through shipment .

@LogicWheels
@LogicWheels 6 жыл бұрын
Possibly you teared the data flex from the battery. If the SDA and / or SDC lines are interrupted, the battery cannot talk to the SMC and the Charge controller anymore. Inspect the battery closely. If you are lucky you just killed the removeable flex from the battery's pcb to the mainboard, but changes are more probable that you killed the data flex on the battery pack itself.

Why not just tear out the keyboard like previous models and you can reuse the rivet holes?
@fixstudioTV
@fixstudioTV 6 жыл бұрын
Nope. The casing is too thin.
@LogicWheels
@LogicWheels 6 жыл бұрын
Not true imho, the casing is not too thin. The rivet holes are thinner then the 'old' rivet holes in the air and retina's though. My process is to tear out te keyboard (will come out in a lot of pieces), remove the rivet leftovers (designed a tool for that myself) and then use a 0.9mm drillbit to widen the holes. These holes are then perfectly suitable to receive the old fashioned keyboard screws to reattach the keyboard. No glue required whatsoever and a firmly attached keyboard as a result. Moreover, this way it is a repair that can be repeated whenever neccessary. It's a painstaking job, not cheap, but still much cheaper then sending it to Apple and have the whole topcase including battery replaced. Done about a dozen now, not a job that I enjoy, prefer to repair logicboards instead. but hey, it comes with the job ;-)

Have you got any videos? Can you please explain this sentence further: "remove the rivet leftovers (designed a tool for that myself) and then use a 0.9mm drillbit to widen the holes" What tool did you design? How are the holes then suitable to use with the screws?
@SuperfixrN
@SuperfixrN 4 жыл бұрын
@@SilentG20 You have to for example take a little bigger flat screwdriver and bend it and almost cut it like a crowbar but you have to make where it meet pointy like a v cut in a 45 degree angle and it will act like a hook. If you have the corners sharp enough. Remove the keyboard, i prefer do use a dremel tool to take the rivets because you will easily deform the alu casing. When old keyboard is removed the pointy things is the only thing left after the rivets hat are removed. Use the modified screwdriver to wiggle it on the sides, not to hard and they should fall off. Don´t use it like a crowbar like you do on nails,wiggle it to the sides right and left.

@@LogicWheels What screws fit in the 0.9 mm?
@hcrgeek1
@hcrgeek1 3 жыл бұрын
FYI. If you use a pair of snippers very gently, you can remove the tiny posts and there are screw holes underneath them. This is why these keyboards usually come with a packet of additional screws.

Why did he use the same old black cover of the replaced keyboard? What kind of liquid did he use on the rivet part, then later on he put a Hard Drive. Here in PH the replacement of Keyboard will cost 20,000php.

Because the new keyboard doesn't come with the sticky cover! it also looks like he used a regular super glue and the weight is to straighten the keyboard flat while the glue dries!

Or buy a Pro computer worthy of that name. This stuff is disposable rubbish. Even Dell will come to your home or office and fix your computer, the reason Apple don't as they know their customers are fanatics and they also know their computers can't be easily and quickly fixed on-site.

Has anyone else had the touch bar stop working?
@deanjlowe
@deanjlowe 6 ай бұрын
My touch bar worked before the keyboard replacement and stopped working after. After some debug, I found that under the corner of the motherboard that has the touch bar connector (near the hinge closest to the keyboard's "1" button) there is a short "elbow" ribbon cable with a small component (with a metal top) on the end that is meant to be flush with the back of the keyboard. This component was not sitting as low as it did before the keyboard replacement, so when the motherboard was screwed down, the metal top of the component made contact with something on the motherboard, stopping the touch bar from lighting up due to a short circuit. I fixed it by putting a small piece of tape (I used Kapton tape) over the component as well as on the motherboard in that area (you can see several gold test points there on the motherboard along with a couple of very small components)
