Hey FunAhead Friends! In this episode, we head back down to Charlotte to my good buddy Elan's machine shop to dial in my 3.4L to 3.8L converted M96. We go into all the details about all the steps along the way, including tolerancing considerations, and everything else we did to get this thing fully long blocked.

Wow, that was enlightening. I'm anticipating doing this sometime in the future, but I wasn't aware of the tolerancing and balancing. I definitely won't be able to do that at home

Yeaa, unfortunately, that kind of thing is too specialized for the home shop. Find yourself a good engine machine shop and they’ll do all that stuff.

Wow, good stuff! Must have been a blast working with such a good mechanic, makes up for the sore feet. How did you get rid of al the grid in the small channels after sandblasting? I think I would have washed and blown compressed air through it a million times just to be sure nothing got left behind 😂 Looking forward to the rest of the work and reinstall into the 911, and than hearing it for the first time! Keep it up!

It’s an absolute blast! You nailed it: not shown was the extensive amount of time running solvent through every channel, then blowing each and every channel out until perfectly dry… aaaaand repeat haha. Thanks for watching as always, Erwin!

Does anyone sell completed long block engines like you are doing other than Raby? Would there be a market for it? There are tons of small independent shops doing what you are doing all over north america but who knows what the actual quality of work is. I bet there would be a market for it. I see m96 engines for sale for almost nothing quite often in my area.

Great question. Does Raby even do it? I guess I thought it was a service to upgrade an existing engine, not selling assembled long blocks. I’m not sure 🤷 Definitely a lot of shops doing rebuilds though. I think there’d defininitely be a market for what you’re suggesting if you can get a cores for super cheap, but the issue is doing it all for the same cost or less than what LN, Hartech, or Slakker could do a rebuild for. It costs a lot to do, but with all the parts and labor cost that goes into a rebuild. Sounds crazy, but I honestly don’t understand how they only charge what they do haha. I dig these kinds of questions!

@Fun_Ahead_TV_Official You are correct that Raby only does upgrades to existing engines. I checked out Slakker and LN Engineering and, both are selling complete engines. I think there would be a market for just the long blocks. If you are a good home mechanic or independent specialty shop, why would you need a full engine with all the accessories. You can put those on or replace them with no issue. The engine assembly to the correct tolerances is the hard part. If I could have bought a "Project Beef for your rear...... engined 911" long block instead of getting an independent to do an engine out service that maybe tackled a quarter of what you are doing for two thirds of the cost, I would have jumped all over it. Provide a long block core discount subject to inspection. Warranty would be tricky but probably not impossible.

“Project Beef for your rear… engined 911” 😂😂 Yes, so true though about all of the above though.. i think there is something to that. Warranty would certainly be a challenge, but doable. To have a company that just sells fresh, ready-to-go long blocks without jumping through the hoops of having your own engine rebuilt, or buying an engine in unknown condition would be pretty awesome. Might have to do a cost analysis on this to see if it’s worth it vs buying a complete engine from Slakker / LN… Hmm.
