I had never really looked at the oil pressure when giving my 996 the beans through the twisties (slightly more than 4 corners in 40 miles) so I went out tonight and watched the gauge. It does dip and sometimes significantly. I think I may have to save up for a new sump with the baffle. I don't think I need the extra oil volume since I will not be tracking the car. Good video!

I would highly recommend putting a sump guard on, particularly if you're going to track it, these are known to scrape on anything that's higher than normal roads, more so if it's been lowered!

Looking great! I just did the third rad, 996.2 injectors and fan resistors to my 99 this weekend. Did you add a spacer for the oil pick up to account for the thickness of the thin metal you used?
@FunAhead_TV_Official
@FunAhead_TV_Official 13 сағат бұрын
Awesome!! Nope, I did not. It’s very thin gauge metal, so it’s not spaced off the bottom by much. If anything, it’ll help give it a little less resistance when drawing in oil, but not high enough off the sump to risk starving it of oil. That was my thinking.

I have been enjoying your videos. One more thing you have to do to bulletproof the engine and that's to improve on the AOS. Get yourself a UAOS with track drain. It has many benefits including the ability to run an extra 1-2 quarts additional oil over what you are running with your FVD/LN deep sump. This extra oil will not only further help with oil pressure, but the UAOS track will help to eliminate intermix issues associated with the AOS failing, not to mention it can better process the oil under high G scenarios which the AOS cannot handle. It's a no brainer. Good luck on your track day.

@FunAhead_TV_Official unfortunately, you will. The oem aos is suboptimal which is why we all went to the motorsports aos. But the motorsports aos can't process oil levels above full. The UAOS track can process all of the oil in a deep sump (2 qts) plus an addition 1-2 qts on top of the additional oil in the deep sump. The M96 NEEDs lots of oil to prevent oil starvation and facilitate oil pressure. AOS and MS AOS can't handle the extra oil that the M96 needs. But the UAOS track can. You spend alot of time and money with your rebuild. No reason to put it in a position to fail if you don't have too.

So how much does this cost? Their website was rather confusing. Basically for my 3.4L M97 Cayman they list the 3.4 -> 3.8 Nikkies re-sleeve as ~$6200 including new pistons. This is with no assembly. Their website says "The price shown is for all six cylinders on the block process." Yet when I called them the guy on the phone said the price was per half case (only 3 cyl). So is it $6200 or $12400 for the whole engine to be sleeved? Obviously this is a massive difference in budget.

To all the Miata guys, This video is part of a series about bringing a neglected 944 into running shape again, and taking it to autocross events. My benchmark for how well I’m doing is my performance compared to that of other Miatas in my class… An underdog story. Or aging father vs athletic son... This entire series is a NOD to the Miata because of how good it is. I achieved my goal at one particular event by beating out every other Miata (the race I outlined in this video). I placed better than them, hence the title. It's not a claim of one car being better than the other. I mean no disrespect. Thank you for watching!

Personally, I would argue and say that this is not better than a Miata. Myself has owned a 1985.5 944 NA The only redeeming factor is that it is a transaxle car besides that it is not better. While the horsepower numbers may be greater, you’re gonna spend so much more money doing timing, belt replacements, water pump replacements, Hydraulic lifters getting stuck and not to mention this being an interference engine that can explode if your timing belt breaks. Buying a almost 40-year-old car comparing to a 20. Something-year-old car is not a good financial option at all. The cost to fix these cars are exponential unless, you were buying for a LS/k swap I would stay away.
@FunAhead_TV_Official
@FunAhead_TV_Official 11 күн бұрын
Exactly! You’re correct, and by many metrics the Miata is an overall better car. The 944 is the older, less refined underdog, and that’s the point. The Miata was the benchmark for the entire project, and I was able to place better than all other Miatas in that autocross. Did I twist words for a clickbaity title? Sure, but that’s KZfaq for ya.

Not sure the 997 prices make this make economic sense. You’ll never get your money back, since a 996 with a cherry engine rebuild still wont’t attract 997-like money. But it does make emotional sense, especially given your use case for the car.

I've found that mileage makes a huge difference in selling prices for the 997's. If you get up over say, 70k miles, it seems to really drop off quite a lot, and the prices for the low miles examples (less than 30k or so) sell at a ridiculous premium. For the money, I'd prefer a high miles car in good condition any day of the week. I'm piling up the miles on my 997 as I drive it every day. I bought the car to drive it as that is where I get the enjoyment of ownership - in the drive. I don't care if it depreciates, and I am ready if I need to rebuild the engine some day. But I am hoping that with the exceptional way I use the car and maintain the car, a rebuild will never be in my future! At least that's the plan!

Outstanding series, David! A couple of questions...did you consider going with the Ultimate AOS? Did you consider the LN spin on filter set-up? How did you arrive at the choices you made on these items? I had the same coolant drip from that small cover and slightly tightening it seems to have done the trick. But I wonder if a guy could just R&R it with some RTV? If that cover is removed do you loose a lot of coolant? You use the 75w90, but when I called Red Line, they recommend the 75w90 NS for my car. I have the Aisin 6sp, where I believe you have a ZF. Not sure what "NS" stands for (no slip?), but it must be different somehow. Really enjoying these videos!
@FunAhead_TV_Official
@FunAhead_TV_Official Ай бұрын
Thank you, Tom! Much appreciated. I hadn't really considered the Ultimate AOS.. Maybe someday, but up until this point, I haven't had any issues with the stock one on track... no oil burn in intake, excessive crankcase pressures, etc.. And as far as the LN spin on, I don't mind changing out the stock cartridge filter, so no I didn't consider that one. It's very possible some RTV could keep it at bay. I have the gasket now though, so I'll swap it out soon enough. Yes, that cover holds back a LOT of coolant, so it's going to be messy. That's good Red Line is looking out for your specific car! Mine is the Getrag G96.xx something.. I believe the normal 75W-90 is OK to run in mine. You're correct, NS is no slip, so if that's specified, then the synchros in your transmission are more sensitive to slip additives.

Hey Tom! What did Blackstone have to say about it in their write up / summary? Did they note it as a concerning thing? A lot of things could effect it outside of a major issue... age / mileage of oil, how you sampled, etc... But obviously it'd come from anything steel in your engine... lifters, cams, crank. Don't stress though! Keep a close eye on it and if it continues to show high for future reports then start digging into it further.

Yea, I don’t think KZfaq likes having links posted in comments. I actually do run a deep sump on my car, in conjunction with the M97 oil return tubes. Haven’t had any oiling issues on track with that setup.. Stock AOS seems to do fine for me, but I have definitely considered the higher performance one as a future upgrade. Do you run the AOS? Curious if you notice a clear difference.

Great job David! You need a t-shirt with this car on it. I’ll be first to reserve one.
