The Macho Set from supermagnete is a unique set. So I'm not surprised you wanted to see a video about it :)
Available here, but only for European shipping: sumag.net/mag-sets-x01
Is a similar set available for US shipping? Please let me know and I'll add a link here (and probably buy the set and make a video about it...).
So far I've only been told about this little set: www.supermagnetman.net/product...
Not a competitor for the Macho Set, but the small magnets could make a good starter set.

At work we have tons of these small disk magnets with a tiny hole as they are meant for holding cabinet doors closed. When I am bored I tend to lay them down in a grid, quite tricky as one wrong move and whoos they all bunch up and crack, can pinch your skin, but they lack any sort of real strength so it is just annoying. Of course you can do fun things with them, work tables are of metal and covers with carboard to avoid scratching stuff you build on them. laying a grind down in one of the corners makes it ideal to keep the screws from dropping away or to annoy people when their tools get stuck :P

Abdulaziz aljuied Most sellers have such selection for sale with the magnets just stacked on each other - but I so much prefer the shown sets with the magnets packed separately in a box (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n85dpcpnu9uudJc.html). Much more convenient and less risk to destroy the magnets when trying to get the magnet you need.

An interesting experiment that you can do with ring magnets is put them on a non magnetic shaft (eg carbon fibre or wood) in alternating polarity, and push them together so the gaps between them is minimal. This causes an interesting bunching of the magnetic field, greatly increasing the effect of dropping the assembly through an aluminium or copper tube. I think the effect is due to the field bunching to make the field lines more perpendicular to the tube wall. Could be an interested video experiment?

Regarding ring magnets, here's what I like to do with them. I have some plastic cylinders that fit snuggly in the hold of the ring magnets. Then I can put a cylindrical magnet inside the plastic cylinder. This allows it to safely pass through the ring magnet. Depending on the orientation, you can shoot the cylinder magnet using the ring magnet as the barrel of a gun. It goes only far enough that the magnetic fields interfere again and stop the cylinder magnet. I've not built a contraption yet, but this could be used to launch a projectile.
@brainiac75
@brainiac75 8 жыл бұрын
+Victor Engel Nice idea. Thanks for sharing. Ring magnets are special and can therefore be used for specialized tasks. It may not be able to shoot a projectile, but I surely can see some odd behavior from the cylinder magnet when caught in the plastic clyinder trying to go through the ring magnet :)

What size magnet do you recommend for glueing to the back of dial indicators used for measuring cross slide travel on lathes? The lathe parts they are applied to are made of cast iron.
@brainiac75
@brainiac75 7 жыл бұрын
That's very difficult to answer with little to no information. Especially since vibrations should be expected and can make magnets slide. You'll have to experiment. Maybe start with a magnet with twice the pull force needed for holding the actual weight of the dial indicators.

There were 2 variants one the proper industrial use in Wind turbine & 2nd version was one that the company made exactly for Hobby collectors - it worked from something 15 Degrees to 150 Degrees centigrade or so - less powerful version but similar levels of magnetic flux. I watched it years ago, I have a vague memory and would like to revisit the video.

It could of helped with lifting force that you had metal on both sides of the magnets; like pull force case 2 if you have a 3/4" x 3/4" x 1/16" grade n42 magnet in case 1 which is the magnet stuck to one piece of metal then you only have 5.37 pounds of pull force. but if you have a piece of metal on each side then you have a large 41.32 pounds of pull force that's 7.6 times more force for a thin little magnet. i have a 3/4 cube magnet its very nice. :) You could drop the ring magnets over a copper or aluminum rod for eddy currents.

I want to buy a 1 inch wide and 1/2 an inch thick neodymium magnet (I'm from the us) is that a good beginner magnet?

It's a disk magnet grade N52

It's on the limit of what I would recommend for a young beginner, because it will pinch you hard! Consider starting a little smaller (you're only 9 according to your channel). But if you are prepared by watching my safety videos, only buy one of them to begin with and keep it away from thick metal objects, it's okay and a very impressive beginner magnet :)

Asmos159 That's actually a good idea. My copper tube has too small a diameter to do anything awesome with these magnets. But I guess with a copper tube close to the inner diameter of the ring magnets it would make a nice eddy currents experiment 'inverse' to the typical magnet inside the copper tube.

brainiac75 That would make a cool video to see you producing eddy current with that ring magnet Brainiac75
