I used to keep a stack of blank paper with a few sheets of actual paperwork on top right on my desk where everyone could see. I also put my direct line on my cell phone's speed dial so that I could call it if I saw my boss coming and pick it up to look busy. It takes great thinking and work to keep from working.

Some ways to kill time - Always "deliver" something to another department. - Work it out with a colleague that when your boss asks "where is this" you just say your colleague was going to do it, and then the colleague says the same thing back. - To get a longer lunch break, excuse -> traffic - To gain sympathy points, use the same techniques as getting back to at your ex. Put pictures of you and a girl (can be friend) around your area for a while and talk about her and one day, remove them all

To leave early, say you have to talk to someone at work, go talk with him or her and leave after that. If someone looks for you, they'll say you went to talk to someone, if they ask that person they will confirm it.

Here's how I look crazy busy :- Pile on extra books, files and sheets of paper on your table to make yourself look crazy busy. Always be carrying something in both your hands when you're moving around, be it a file, a book, your coffee mug, the newspaper. When someone tries to talk to you or even call you, make it look like you can only talk to that person for a minute. Fidget. Gaze back and forth at something. Look at your watch. Look at your phone. And exit ASAP.

I use the light on at the desk. You have to make sure you don't always leave it on, but when you need to step out, leave it on. Also two monitors works well. Lastly use a phone headset, and one plugged into your computer. People don't pay close enough attention to see if you are listening to music or talking on the phone.

I have a big office where I work by myself, but bosses can walk by and people can walk in. I usually just clean a lot when things are calm, and see what stuff I can keep and which stuff is scrap material. And walking fast down the hallways, hehehe.

Walk around if you work in retail, also stand next to customer if they're shopping with else so it look's like you're interacting with them!

If you do a screen shot of computer 'work' such as company email, spreadsheets, data entry, etc. and use it as your desktop wallpaper your lock screen will look like you just left for a minute or you can close your web browser and look like you are 'working' when someone walks in. Also keep your desk a little cluttered.

well I just started working so I like going to work

if i have a special task to do, i make sure to get it done very fast, then (when im already finished) i go to my boss and ask him some serious questions about it, making sure, he thinks that im working on it and giving a 110 % - then i go back to my desk, surf half an hour to an hour on the internet and hand the finished task in afterwards :p

I usually set my computer to auto on and auto off. It auto on earlier in the morning so I can come in late and auto offs later when I leave earlier. Note, make sure you don't have too many things to carry in with when you come in so everyone will just think you're "back from the toilet" in the morning and "going to the toilet" when you leave.

I often have this problem at a factory. Sadly walking 5 mph with 1 box looks more busy than 3 mph with 2

Also, not being currently employed makes it *much* harder to get a job, especially in this economy where you have to compete with many more applicants. A lot of the time, the people who make hiring decisions will just toss any applications that don't have a "current employment" listed without even conducting an interview.
