This sheep has been struck by blowflies, let's get the maggots off it and give it medication. This is a common problem on New Zealand farms that we deal with throughout the year. Let's make this sheep more comfortable by shearing off the maggots and applying a medication treatment.

@@ethnaleigh4488 No, it can happen quite quickly, especially in warm climates. All it really takes is a couple of fly bites or an open wound and flies get into the opened skin and lay eggs then BOOM, you have maggots. It's called "flystrike" and thank GOD it hasn't happened to my herd of sheep so far. As you can see, it's ugly to treat. This isn't often a case of farmer neglect. Flystrike occurs when blowflies lay eggs in warm, moist areas on a sheep and these eggs hatch into maggots, which then invade the living sheep. This can happen in spring, summer or autumn and especially when conditions are humid. Flystrike can be a significant problem for New Zealand sheep farmers. It is estimated that 2-10% of the national flock is affected by flystrike annually and the subsequent economic effects can be measured in the millions of dollars. Farmers in New Zealand spend in excess of $15 million annually on treatments. Here is a video of us giving the sheep a treatment for this. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gpifirdnr-DZgXk.html

This sheep did not have an injury. Australian Blowflies lay maggots on the backs of perfectly healthy sheep which then begin to bite, causing a wound which then attracts more flies. The Australian blowfly sometimes targets healthy, uninjured sheep, laying eggs on them. The hatched maggots bite, causing wounds which become a further target for more flies. Here is a video that shows the treatment after the maggots are removed: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kMWpeLBl17q8pH0.html

@@FarmWithMeNZ Maggots are helpful because they eat dead flesh. They do not attack or eat healthy tissue. The issue here is an injury and an infection that persisted/persists. The maggots are only doing what nature intended for them to be, garbage collectors.

Flystrike happens quickly. A sheep can get into this condition in only a few days.

@@leepearson7868 I'm no entomologist but I do know that the life cycle of a maggot is extremely short so while it may not have happened overnight, it happened extremely fast. A maggot is in the intermediary stages of it's lifecycle. Even someone like me who is a merchant marine knows that. I'm certainly not going to criticize a sheep farmer when I don't know his business. If he's out there working his herd, I'm pretty sure he knows far more about it than I do; particularly if he's posting it to show it to us.

I never ever knew this was something that could happen. If I saw this on one of mine I would do the exact same thing you are. I can't even imagine how she felt. I am notorious for being a thural like yourself. Knowing me I would be using my giant tweezers looking at every nook and cranny... very time consuming so I'm happy they have medicine.

I want to learn why the flies lay their eggs on the sheep with no apparent food source. Maggots are attracted to dead flesh not live, so why are they being laid deep in the wool. Do the maggots eat the wool or is there a dead food source that I don’t see. Thank you for any help answering these questions. Thanks for the videos.

Wait. So you only have to shave the infected area and then you pour that white stuff on it ? Is a desinfectant or something similar ?
@FarmWithMeNZ
@FarmWithMeNZ Жыл бұрын
It is a fly deterrent, shearing the area to expose the eggs and maggots to the sun and remove the protection of the wool is enough to kill existing maggots and eggs.

Just under the wool starts turning brown and discolored. The sheep is often agitated and trying to itch the area and there may be flies hovering around it.

Unfortunately flystrike happens very quickly. In only a couple of days a sheep can go from perfectly healthy to a situation like this. We do our best to treat our flystrike stricken sheep as soon as we spot them.
