I saw this sheep who needed help, good thing his pal was there to help me catch him! After catching him we gavehim a full shear to help him to not be stricken again.
We help a lot of our sheep with our Handypiece portable sheering handpiece, it really helps us treat these sheep quickly.
This video was made possible by our channel sponsor, Handypiece LTD.

Sheep are hard work, my brother used to help one of our friends with lambing. Have you read the Henry Brewis books? My friends farm sheep in the Ingram Valley in Northumberland near the Scottish border and found the books hilarious. One of the things that struck them as particularly true was "The purpose of a sheep is to consume the maximum amount of medication before dying unexpectedly".

Blowflies will be attracted to soiled fur, wool or feathers of animals and depending on the species of blowfly they'll deposit live larvae or eggs on the animal and they begin attacking, infesting and consuming the live tissues of the animal producing open wounds, some species will only consume dead or badly infected tissues (and such a species is cultured in highly controlled and sterile conditions for medical purposes to this day) but usually it's the ones that target living tissue that can be a real problem. In animals it's called flystrike or being flystricken but the general term for an infestation of parasitic larvae is myiasis, but I wouldn't google that one if you're eating if I were you. Naturally having insects creating an open wound is bad, harms the animal and damages the fleece, prevention and catching it early are important. I don't have a smallholding (so please correct me if I'm mistaken) but I'm surrounded in mixed arable-livestock farms, from what I can tell it's pretty common practice to dock the long tails of sheep breeds that have long wooly tails when they're very young by applying tight rubber bands that cut off perfusion and the tail dies and drops off as they represent a surface that can get soiled easily.

😖 Poor sheeps ! This reminds me so much when I was grooming my Bichon Frisé, it was 100% exactly the same without the maggots : wooly curly fur dreadlocks that traps dirt and nasty things underneath, finding eczema skin lesions with pus underneath the matte and tangles , that was forming a blood crust and I had to trim off all her hair so the skin can breath and heal. Except that the dog trimmer’s combs are made of plastic so the comb breaks when you pull through the fur tangles. That’s what I needed: a metal trimmer for sheeps. And « docile like a lamb » my bichon was undergoing the trim like this sheep without rebellion 😂.

Flystrike isn't noticeable until the damage is done but you'd very very surprised and happy to realise that sheep heal very quickly and the time it takes you to think about what's for dinner, the sheep has forgotten what has just happened. Sheep feel more distress being away from their mob more than anything else.

At some times of the year sunburn can be an issue. Depending on the severity of the flystrike we can use a cover comb on the shearing Handypiece which would be more like a buzz cut than a shave. However this isn't always suitable. We do our best to give our sheep the best outcome possible.

No they lay there eggs on the sheep which hatch into lava or maggots which then eat away at the top layers of flesh causing pain and infection.
