@@Tvboy777 Yes, Magus is a really old word, that essentially translates to “priest” or “magician” - and is literally the root of that word. The modern English “wise men” or “kings” as an alternate version, but it’s from the same story, the three magi visiting Jesus.

This is a little off topic but I'd love to see them try some ideas in the next seasons to help push more variety and less staples. 1. A singleton season. Each player can play each card only once for the season. No ban list because even the broken cards like mana crypt won't be as obnoxious when you can only play them once. I think it'd be real interesting to see the different players approach. Do they put the good cards together or spread them out? 2. Veto power. Each player builds their deck but then the other 3 players get to look at the decklist and remove a certain number (3 to 5?) of cards they don't want to play against (cyclonic rift? Rhystic Study? opposition agent?). They then add to their own deck the appropriate number to bring it to a full deck. Obviously they can't remove your commander. 3. Commander draft. I know this is logistically challenging but I think it'd really fun to watch. I'd even go back to watch the draft from each player's perspective. Commander draft is a LOT of fun. They could do draft from a Commander cube or if they were feeling ambitious they draft fantasy football style. I don't know if magic online supports this so they might have to use some other program or method for the draft but then still play the game as normal.

Think it should also be mentioned that Magus of the Candelbra also works great with utility lands. Second Maze of Ith activation, second card draw off lands that allow card draw, etc. Can also be used politically if needed since you can uptap another player's lands so they can board wipe or something.

in all seriousness i would love to see a season of commander clash where you do play the “salty” cards like blood moon and mindslaver. One thing y'all didn't mention about Magus of the Abyss and Magus of the Tabernacle is that they're REALLY good in a Myrkul, Lord of Bones deck. That deck breaks the symmetry of their effects since you want most of your creatures to die anyhow, and the magi work just as well when they come back as enchantments. Great choice with Myrkul to buy the time you need to set up and combo off.

I have an Esper Fliers deck in paper, and I think that Magus of the Moat is actively bad for fliers decks. Your attackers are all dinky small fliers so there's no way you're applying enough pressure to all three of your opponents. It's better to let your opponents threaten each other and you pick off the stragglers. And also one of the most powerful and popular archetypes is Dragon themed decks, which ignore your Magus and have actually threatening flying bodies.

I have magus of the balance in my Surprise Party deck with Folk Hero + Burakos as my commanders, and it’s performed pretty well since Burakos is inherently treasure ramp so I’m not really down, and the only non party creature in the deck is tergrid to flash out in response to my magus trigger, or Stick together. Obviously a lot needs to happen for that to work, but that is the ceiling for it in my deck, and the floor is I just use the treasures Burakos gives me it’s very nice as a creature to add to the party

Okay so Magus of the Library, I'm definitely not saying it's good. But Phil's point about having a 3 drop commander, I dont even think that's necessary. If you can play it on turn two, you should be able to draw a decent amount of cards. Turn 1, 7 cards in hand, draw to 8, play a land back to 7. Turn 2, draw back to 8, play a land and the Magus, down to 6. Turn 3, draw back to 7, tap magus to draw to 8, now you can do a land drop and play one other card. As long as you continue playing two cards per turn, your normal draw + magus draw will cancel them out and keep you hovering between 6 and 8 cards in hand indefinitely. If you need to play 3 cards in one turn, you'll break the streak. But in that case, cast your commander instead of a card from your hand the next turn, and then youll be back in the cycle. Or let's say you get down to only 0 or 1 lands in hand, you could skip a land drop to get back up to 6 (meaning next turn you draw to 7 and tap him for 8 getting you back in the cycle). I mean so long as you don't need the land to cast what you need. Because chances are decent that the next card you draw won't be a land, probably around 60%, so youll have that land ready for the next turn when you hit 7 cards in hand and now you can get back in that cycle. I think if you get it early and play your cards correctly with hand size in mind, you can get an extra draw for 3 or 4 turns at least. TLDR, regular draw + magus draw = 2 cards per turn so if you average casting 2 cards per turn you can keep it going, and correct if you get off track with a cantrip, casting your commander, skipping a land drop, etc. If your deck is built right thats close to an extra card for every turn of the game.

Hot Take: Magus of the Arena is a sleeper pick. In an equipment deck, it pairs with Stuffy Doll and Brash Taunter & Blazing Sunsteel or Fiendlash very well. And can benefit from Zirda (cause it will be in your equipment deck). Magus of the Tabernacle actually has a critical difference between the original whether it's upside or downside is debatable depending on the situation. But the original says destroy not sacrifice. So while you can't play indestructible creatures if your own it does actually tax your opponents indestructible creatures which is worth noting. Played both for years together in legacy and this was my only creature that could attack lol. Not practical to do that anymore though.

I think magus of the moon is fine to play. Its going to be more effective in higher power decks since people will tend to run more non-basic lands but also more interaction. In lower power decks people will have enough basics that they can answer it after magus hits the battlefield. This is obviously situational since lower power decks can run tapped duals but I don't think it will happen a lot or effect enough lands.

It really isn’t hard to draw optimally with magus of the library until it gets real late in the game, by which point drawing any other superior mana dork is just as bad. The key with it is you have to activate it before you play your land. If you can manage to have 7 at any point you can always draw a card off magus since magus draws you to 8, play a land and a spell down to 6, then draw step to 7 again on your next turn to rinse and repeat. Any incidental card draw will let you double spell, and with how good green is at drawing cards that won’t be difficult.

People forget about the suspend version Restore Balance but it is legal and only 1 mana. You just need a way to speed up the suspend counters or wait 6 turns for it to go on the stack. Also, Candelabra of Tawnos doesn't have to be tapped, which is why it's astronomically better than its Magus compared to a lot of the others.

Had a 60 card deck back in the day based on it using all of the borderposts to make sure I wouldn't have lands in play. Used any cascade spell with converted cost 3 and nothing that had a cost of less than 3 so I would always hit it and wipe all lands and creatures. Would follow up with march of the machines to use the borderposts to kill. Not as viable a strategy in commander, but cascade is a great way around the suspend.

If your deck wants a tabernacle effect, that magus is incredibly close to the actual card. Tabernacle is a land that doesn’t tap for mana, a creature that costs 1 each upkeep also costs you a land. If I’m playing tabernacle my deck probably has 5 or less creatures and this one can still block

The problem with Magus of the Library is that you gotta cut more efficient cards to include it. More efficient mana generating cards, more efficient draw spells. And that sacrifice will turn into a mediocre card at borh things that can only accomplish one of them CONDITIONALLY Also, you gotta tap it to draw, so you're NOT ramping in the early game. Most likely you will discard stuff to hand size. Maybe it's good in a heavy recursion deck?

I used to use magus of the bazaar in my Moldrotha deck. Worked wonders. Basically you use it any deck you'd want to mill your self. Of course Seth would be down on this card. it doesn't derp and give you card advantage. The way to look at this card is, you milling 2 cards and discarding 1 BUUUT you get to choose what gets milled and whats stays to a limited extent. The bigger you hand size the better this card becomes. It is NOT a card advantage engine. Even in Muldrotha its still bringing you down a card except for the fact your graveyard is your 2nd hand to a lesser degree but there are times where you see things you don't necessarily want to discard/mill but that comes down to proper deck construction and discipline on when you use this cards activated ability. If you can't stand to let go of cards in your hand then this is not the card for you. You have to be able to look at your current hand say I am willing to lose one of these cards to dig into my deck.

Take it from someone who has been cussed out by multiple different people at Commander nights. It is not an internet problem. If you counter or play blood moon. People will cuss you out.

Magus if Library is soooo good in my Kogla the Titan Ape deck. Being a human is clutch. And in monogreen, tapping for colorless is about as useful as tapping fir green, especially considering I have GG to cast magus in the first place

Magus of the Wheel is definitely my favorite one. I can't afford a Wheel of Fortune so it's nice to have something like it on a body

I would argue that there is a difference between destroying lands and playing blood moon. If the blood moon gets destroyed, all your lands are fine. It's much harder to reverse an Armageddon. You can also play more basics. It does hit 4/5 color decks harder, but if you want to play those decks, you are signing up for having some problems with your mana base. They print a lot of ways to punish non basics just like they print ways to get rid of graveyards.

In defense of the bridge, if it worked from the graveyard it'd be even better than the actual bridge from below right? Being exactly the same with a more relevant card type

Hot take on Magus of the Bazaar: It's deceptive, bc you're comparing it to Bazaar of Bagdad. It's not that! It's a spellshaper, that turns any card in your hand into a 0 mana Faithless Looting, except you even get to draw the cards before playing the spell!

Vineyard is actually pog in my Yurlok deck, as mana burn exists. So the people who can't use green mana struggle. And it just helps me :)

I’ve been brainstorming a modern deck to take fnm that uses magus of the bridge. Mono black devotion with Gravecrawler, voidwalker, magus, phyrexian obliterator, and grey merchant

With Memory Jar you don't always want to crack the turn you play it- most effectively it would be the turn after anyways when you have that 5 mana it costs to cast it untapped (when the Magus wouldn't have summoning sickness anymore anyway). Any deck that wants Memory Jar (for non-artifact reasons) wants Magus of the Jar- it's the same argument for Magus of the Bazaar, so I think it deserves a B And Magus of the Candelabra does mana fix before you get your spicy land, which is a much more decent floor than "does nothing"

Totally Fair: Dropping blood moon on a group of people aware of, and under the understanding they need to be able to handle, a blood moon Dick Move: Dropping blood moon on a group of people entirely unused to commonly playing against blood moon.

People don't play magus of the order because of all the reasons you guys said. It's a flashing kill me sign in most cases lol. Also Magus of the wheel is the goat. I have a rakdos wheel deck with new Chainer at the helm, and magus is the best wheel in the deck. Wheel every turn!
