Mahalia almost broke down during the singing of this. A few years previously, Dr King asked Mahalia to sing for his funeral...he knew his time was drawing to an end.

After I watched this for only a few seconds I was sobbing uncontrollably, a ton of memories hit me all at once. I thought about how this young man was shot dead in cold blood for no apparent reason and how Mahalia was literally trying to keep it together crying out unto the most high in this video, pouring out her emotions and frustrations, and disappointments , and still trying to keep her composure as the whole world stood in awe of this amazing woman , i was just a young five year old girl when all this occurred i do recall my beloved mother crying and weeping and suddenly I began crying and weeping and sobbing i could go on and on about this but I guess I better stop here enjoy your day and have a peaceful night

Mlk jr and Mahalia Jackson were great friends who truly loved one another - : Mahalia would often accompany him to his rallies. It was during one of those rallies where she heard him talk abt a dream he had abt black and white children playing together. Later that same year, she was standing over to the side of MLK at the march on Washington while he was speaking from a prepared speech. Toward the end of the speech he hesitated a little and that's when Mahalia yelled over to him saying, " tell them about your dream Martin, tell them abt your dream". At that point, he glanced over in her direction, placed his prepared notes to one side and began improvising the I Have a Dream portion of his speech. There's an interesting article by Emily Crockett abt this magical moment entitled " The woman who inspired MLK jr.'s I Have a Dream speech.

Not to mention she loved Dr. King like a baby brother, or almost like a son (she was 18 years his senior). It is commonly said that Precious Lord was MLK's favorite song and legend has it that he asked Mahalia, his friend and favorite singer to sing it if he should pass on before she does, at his funeral. So she granted his request. Bless her heart.

Here I am at the sound check & they say, “they’ll call you up during the funeral scene.” I prepare as if Nykole was going to sing then the actress says, “...singing Dr. Kings’s favorite hymn Precious Lord, Sis. MAHALIA JACKSON,” I instantly had to get my emotions together because this will be my 5th time having the honor of portraying you. Just look at the outpouring of support I never, ever in all my life seen so many black people together in unity in a peaceful setting . I am sure this was truly challenging and truly difficult for Miss Jackson too bear she was very close to Dr King according to what I read about their relationship and documentaries I witnessed with my own eyes on television their bond was unbreakable but death came knocking and Dr King answered I was just a little girl back then I remembered seeing my mom broken from the tears and I recall balling and crying my little eyes out with my little five year old self me and my beloved Momma weeping and moaning just like Mary and Martha. I didn't know any better I was just hugging my Momma crying and weeping. but god knows I truly didn't understand what was truly happening but by his grace and tender mercy Jesus knows I know right now lord have mercy Jesus take my hand.

The one she sung at the church she was wearing black, with a black and white hat (many of us have seen the picture online). Mahalia only did one verse. As soon as she sings the 2 words, "Precious Lord," you can hear a lady scream in the audience. I think this was the second day, before he was entombed.
