This is the first maintenance pruning for this Snow Rose Serissa bonsai since it was potted in October 2021. The new shoots were starting to harden off which is a sign that you can safely prune the new shoots back.

It's interesting how unevenly distributed were those tall shoots. It's like half of the tree is growing more vigorously. Loved the little flowers. I don't think I've seen serissa flowers as big/full as these.You're clearly doing a good job with caring for this tree.

Thanks, yeah it is interesting 🤔. I try to rotate my trees on the bench so that they don't grow in the same direction throughout the seasons. I just love the flowers on Serissas. Their like tiny little roses 😊

@@KleinBonsai Yes, it could be the exposure to light.. Who knows? They have a mind of their own. 😋

Definitely a combination of multiple factors, but I think light and heat is the biggest factors here. But, yeah they do have a mind of their own 😄

Good job Matthew! I’ve been holding off on getting a serissa as every seems to kill them (except Nigel and now you). Love the little flowers.

Thanks! Yeah, they are a finicky species. Not too dry and not too wet, not too hot and not too cold 😅 Even with our mild winters I had to bring it in at night during our coldest month. It won't handle temps below 7°C. BUT if you can give it the right conditions, you should try one! 😁

Nice videos man i would suggest you to do the following to this tree: cut the right branch of your front then rotate the tree and make the back the front. Don't worry about the bulge it gives character to the tree. Also i would incline the tree to the left after this front change. Try to visualize it and see if you like it otherwise keep the 2 branches coming from the same spot but its considered a fault 🙁

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll go and have a look 🤔. Looking back at videos even while editing, I always see more things to do to the tree to make it better 😄

Awesome video! I like the bulge on the trunk. It makes the tree look like it has an interesting backstory. PS: Glad you like the turntable ;)

Do you use special bonsai soil or is is just stock standard potting soil?
@KleinBonsai
@KleinBonsai 2 жыл бұрын
I use bonsai soil, but I am not sure what it consists of. It is a mix that I get from a bonsai nursery. The bag doesn't have branding on it

What do you do if none of your branches have leaves on them?
@KleinBonsai
@KleinBonsai Жыл бұрын
Serissas are evergreen trees but do drop their leaves if they get too much water or if the temperatures changes drastically. Mine has never dropped all of its leaves. Keep taking care of it like normal and see if new leaves will grow. Also you can scratch the bark a little bit to see if it is still green underneath

Recently bought a snow rose without knowing how difficult it would be to maintain it😅 really worried about winter any tips for a beginner?🙏
@KleinBonsai

I bring mine inside during the nights when temperatures drop below 7°C (44.6F). But it gets warm enough during the day that I can take it outside again for the day. It needs LOTS of light. So, wherever you overwinter it, make sure it gets enough light. It doesn't need a lot of water in when it is dormant, but don't let it dry out completely. Hope this helps 😅

Hi! I now have my Serissa since 2,5weeks. Always watered daily. It was on the window shelf. Now wheather is colder. Still, I dont know why: Almost all leaves are suddenly dried out. PLS help how I can safe it? I think it is still alive as when cutting branches theres still green underneath. Kindest regards from Vienna!

Is it getting enough light/sun? My guess would be that the air is too dry on the window shelf. Did you mist it? That will bring up the humidity around it. But also be careful now not to over compensate by over watering it. It requires a lot less water when it starts getting cooler

Also, it is hard to tell exactly what to do without a photo. I'd suggest make a post on www.bonsainut.com/. Everyone there is very kind and helpful 😊
