Today I'm working on my Serissa foetida, styling it to look like an African Acacia tree and while I'm waiting for the rain to stop, I show some updates to trees that have been worked on recently.
I'm also Zooming with the Midland Bonsai Society in Birmingham England, Joining them for their June meeting!
To check out their club, see the link below....

When you put them in hot water inside the thermos I automatically thought that will just kill the embryos. When I put them in cold water the next day the shell was soft and easy pealable off

I haven't grown Baobabs before but with my experience in applying heat to seeds, I poured boiling water on my Acacia seeds without scratching the seed and left the water to cool for 24 hours and they germinated. I think if you scratch the coating, you don't need to pour hot water as the point of the boiling water I believe is to damage to coating so that the seed can germinate.

The Serissa is just looking better and better :) I am sad about the Baobab seeds and I think your assumption is right that they virtually got cooked either because too long exposure of the hot water or that the hot water got in direct contact. Take care.

Try to just scratch the Baobab pod and then plant them. I did that and it took about a month but they came up.

What soil mix are you using for your serissa Nigel? I need to do a repot without touching the roots because the soil that came with my serissa retains too much water
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Davis, I use a 50/50 mix of perlite and Safetysorb (Fullers earth). I screen out the fine particles to get a particle size of 3 to 4 mm (1/8"). This soil requires fertilizer to keep the tree healthy!

After about min 21:28 you say, "if you wire, you don't get a lot taper and movement" Would you be so kind and make a video about it, where you explain, what you want to say with that, because it does not make any sense and sounds not right.
@dk2614
@dk2614 3 жыл бұрын
Nigel sticks to a fairly rigid philosophy of clip and grow. Where all the branches have movement that is developed over many seasons of clipping and branch selection and reselection. So the movement that you achieve is a more subtle and less contrived since it is the tree growing the way it wants to with cooperation with Nigel. Likewise the taper and root structure are of a higher quality since it has been many seasons of growth and clipping. Many of Nigels trees don't necessarily look much like anything right now but take a look at some of his mature trees and the quality is clear to see. It's my understanding that the Japanese prefer clip and grow as the mature bonsai created are not easily achieved otherwise. Nigel might chime in but that's what I have learned from him. I do both clip and grow and wire but I use very little wire outside of setting the main structure. To each their own...
