For me a big grimderp moment is when the AdMech were fighting Tyranids and a Skitarii Alpha came up with a plan to release highly flammable toxic chemicals into the air then ignite it with neutron lasers. The FLAMING SKY resulted in any nid reinforcements burning up in the atmosphere setting the ground forces on fire. The Grey Knights derpiness reminds me of how they fought alongside the Tallarn Desert Raiders against a massive demon incursion. After the Tallarn guardsmen and Grey Knights successfully stopped the incursion, the Grey Knights slaughtered all the remaining Guardsmen because "HURR DURR YOU WITNESSED US AND DEMONS LOL". If you really wanted to keep it secret then why not induct the guardsmen as a support army for the Grey Knights/Ordo Maleus considering they are now probably pretty good at fighting demons. From what I can tell, I think the Grey Knights prefer to try to get the Guardsmen killed in battle. Enough Guardsmen _will_ turn the tide against a Daemonic horde, but leaves a lot of loose ends to deal with, so I think the Grey Knights plan their strategies so that by the end of a major battle or a campaign, _most_ of the cooperating Guardsmen have already been slain, if not _all_ of them. They _deliberately_ plan their campaigns so that any witnesses are likely to die when and where they can be the most useful, meaning that there may only be a dozen Guardsmen left to put down by the end.

I am impressed that nobody talks about the grimderp way the Inquisition handled the rightful protest of the Celestial Lions. The Lore paints Space Marines as an extremely rare and powerful resource for any general or admiral in pretty much every theater of war. Like a single company of around 100 Marines tipping the scales of entire sector spanning wars. So nobody in his or her right mind would go around and make it their life goal to wipe out an entire chapter of highly loyal Marines, especially in a war like the one for Armageddon. "Ork Snipers" are a meme for a reason. When the Celestial Lions left Armageddon with less then 95 Marines, without any Apothecaries, all Gene Seed of their fallen brothers lost and damned to rebuild their strength for generations before becoming a fraction of the force they once were, the Inquisition had to kick them further by denying them the means to create Primaris Marines, denying them reinforcements, when their homeworld was destroyed by a warband of Chaos Space Marines and send out a Callidus assassin to kill their Chapter Master. At one point in that story the Inquisition could have left it as a message send loud and clear, but they had to go even further out of pure spite. That nobody in said Inquisition tried to intervene in that kind of destruction of allied forces, or any other authority of the empire for that matter, is also highly grimderp.

I've heard a few stories from city kids who had a little freakout when they went camping for the first time, and if people can live under train tracks and get a full night's sleep living in a baneblade would be fine and could definitely lead to sleep dependence. Just think of it in terms of the kinds of sounds. They wouldn't be random, it would be the same engine, beeps, and servo sounds repeated regularly. That's exactly the kind of stimulus that can become subconscious, it's the same mechanism in your brain that lets you hear when the engine of your car sounds wrong

Another big Grimderp moment was what happened in the story, "Death of Integrity". To give context, Archmagos Plosk meets an AI from the DAOT about 15,000 years before the current setting of Warhammer. In that story, the AI tells the Archmagos how the ship warp traveled in time thousands of years into the future. The crew saw the future of the galaxy, that it will slowly be consumed by chaos. When the captain went to the nearest planet to warn humanity, he and his crew were called heretics and brutally tortured to death. The Grimderpness in this situation is the length that the Imperium goes whenever they hear about stuff from the DAOT. Yet, when people from the that very timeline, with working technology to back up their claims, come to your doorstep to warn you, no one, not even an Inquisitor, someone from the Mechanicus, or a Noble decided to do a thorough investigation on their claims. Not even the threats involving chaos, which anyone in a position of power that is loyal to the Imperium would take seriously. They just simply label them heretics just to show how much humans have fallen from their prime.

First off it's the DAOT, an event where events like the the men of iron eventually occurred and humanity became superstitious about a.i, and those who don't worship the emperor must die. It's not that hard to understand, while they did saw the future, the inquisitor wouldn't be able to find any evidence to see If their even telling the truth to begin with. It's like if someone told me the big bang will happen next month, there's no literal evidence to back it up. So why should I believe some random crazy person.

They are put in the Sarcophagus because it rapidly ages them to adulthood and grows all of their organs except for the Black Carapace. Dante goes from small, malnourished, lightly mutated boy to sexy Neophyte in just a few months, same for his friends that made it. What actually makes them go insane during that coma are the Visions of Sanguinius that come with the Gene-Seed, so they would've gone mad anyway sooner than later.

Then you remember that the Space Wolves were basically designed by the Emperor to put the hurt on _other_ Astartes, when necessary. No matter how busted the Grey Knights are, they are still, first and foremost, Astartes. That makes them _prey_ to the Space Wolves; _dangerous_ prey, but prey nonetheless. The Space Wolves are too independent for the High Lords, however, so they ended up needing to create the Minotaurs to bash whichever Chapter was bothering them at any given time instead.

About the Baneblade crews: I live in a sparsely populated country in Europe. A friend-of-a-friend who lives in the dead-silent countryside had a Japanese girl over once, from some densely populated city like Tokyo or Osaka i think. She was stressed out AF because of the ROARING silence. This phenomenon was unknown to us at the time so we didn't understand what happened to her. But her mental health was quickly deteriorating and couldn't take it so she had to go back in less than week. I know an old woman who runs a farm in the countryside who welcomes volunteers, to work for food and education, who had a Hong Kong girl over once. She also had to be sent home within a week. She was also stressed out by the silence and lack of people. So the family of course helped her to the airport.

The whole conceit of "Grey Knights have to kill loyalists when they see them" was a lame attempt to justify why the Grey Knights would fight certain factions in spite of being incorruptible. So, having written himself into a corner, Matt Ward decided that the best way to reconcile it would be to make the Grey Knights incredibly stupid... y'know, instead of just... not resolving it at all. Grey Knights infighting other Imperial armies with your buddies around a gaming table (and various other lore-breaking encounters, like Tyranids and Necrons, or Sisters of Battle and Tau) is one of those things probably best written off by the MST3K mantra, rather than trying to justify it in universe... poorly. For a similarly-themed palette cleanser, there used to be a section in the old 3.5th "Daemonhunters" codex that was devoted to the reasons that Grey Knights would fight that faction. And the Chaos entry read something to the effect of "...seriously?" That was admittedly pretty funny.

I realized the grimderp when I read about two creatures and couldn't think of a reason they would exist outside of being grimdark. The first is basically a sugar glider, it starts off nice and friendly but after a couple generations it turns hostile and becomes a carnivore, literally it does this to gain trust before turning into meat eaters and attacking. The second is literally called a face eater, so you can probably guess where this is going, it looks like a piece of cloth and it's strategy is to wrap itself around the victim's head, forming a airtight seal, secrete acid to melt the flesh, and dig barbed spikes into the victim's face so it can't be pried off without tearing flesh, there is no reason why a creature would evolve to become that.
@anthonylamonica8301
@anthonylamonica8301 2 жыл бұрын
The Face Eater is native to Catachan, a Jungle Death World. Catachan is explicitly mentioned to be the end result of an ancient Tyranid invasion that managed to mutate and warp the biosphere and ecology of the entire planet in preparation for getting devoured by their Hive Fleet... except that the Hive Fleet never showed up to eat everything, and the Tyranids eventually lost their connection to the Hive Mind and devolved into these horrible, degenerate lifeforms that make up the entirety of the food-chain on Catachan. These creatures are unnecessarily terrible and grimdark because they are ultimately still Tyranids, and _Tyranids_ are a faction that exists _exclusively_ to be unnecessarily terrible and grimdark.

This reminds me of the Warhammer 40k vs, lore searching and lore contradictions. Aka.. 1,) The Guardsman being painted as useless piece of shits, who can't do anything, and are only there to blow up, but in other lore they are described as well equipped, well geared, with power armor support, anti tank, and superior tactics. As in proper soldiers. In other lore you can use them even against Chaos Space Marines in defense or whatever. Bit of a stretch. It's just very contradictory at very many points. I also think that transporting, feeding, training, and arming, millions of Guardsman, just to throw them in the grinder and kill them off for "grimdark" is stupid. 2,) The second is the equipment grimdark. Aka having 10 Terminator suit left in the Whole of Imperium, Such Rarity, Such Devastating Pain of Losing a Holy Sacred Relic, and than they lose a 100 of it in every battle. But also, the logic of recovering them. If that Terminator suit was lost, 99%, whatever killed it, just destroyed it. It's also piloted by an Astarte. Limbs lost, getting cut in half, organs lost, still fighting. But somehow that Terminator suit is "whole enough" to be recovered, repainted and it works again. Logic. Leman Russ. In one lore all of them are made so well, that they can shrug off heavy weaponry, and like they are so durable they bounce when a knights cannon fire hits them. BS. Really? BS. If that so, what stops them? Well Orcs are so much stronger with their shitty scrap shoota, or they cut it up with knifes. Yeah, also a guardsman or anyone can blow them up with wh40k RPG-s. BS. All the way. This is "fixed", by other lore saying, that most forge worlds just can't make them well! They run 60-80% less than what they would be capable, and the crew pretty much dies of smoke or noise pollution. ~Grimdark. Or simply, the Leman Russ is a modular OP tank, like T-90-ies were, but they are also cheap and mass produced. 3,) The last one is the gear problem. Aka, how strong a lasgun is? Base it on the lore. One lore says, that it's heat based, and so it blows up water. It's really dangerous to humans, but, not really at anything else that's water and meat based. Orcs are fungus, so it doesn't work. It just leaves a small hole. Why? They have blood. They have plenty of water. Well, they are stronk! Get used to it. Okay. Tyranids. They have even more fluid? Nope. Also doesn't do anything. It's just dumb. Doesn't make a sense. They are also horde type of enemies. In other lore, it does make sense. Unless you hit a part of the Tyranid carapace, the strongest point, you can pretty much decapitate them. Same with Orcs. No scrap? Dead Orc. Pretty much just cuts it up. Blows his chest open, blows head off, blows arms off. Fungus soup. There are a lot of contradictions in the lore.

Actually I find that whole loss of technology a bit grimderp. Like you are telling me that imperium lost the technology to built different rounds for autocannons, but still can built gellar fields, warp drives, plasma and grav weaponry and far more? I see how they could lose some kind of hardcore tech, but often its just something that could be easily reinvented back from other, still available, pieces of technology (which is something that admechs do a lot). The Gellar Field retcon is especially stupid because it's so easy to rework to give whatever brainlet that thought of the idea a pat on the head without throwing away the idea entirely (because I assume they're high-ranking enough that that's not an option). Basically, if you want to keep the comatose-psyker idea and also be grim _dark_ without being grim _derp,_ then just make it that there was a 'discovery' in some distant sector of the Imperium where a sufficiently-damaged vessel required a truly deep dive into its otherwise sacred inner workings...only to discover a comatose psyker as the source of the Field. Then there could be some genuine investigation and debate among the Inquisition (you know, Eisenhorn stuff, where it's actually pleasant to read and not insane garbage) about whether they should make this information known to the necessary parties or if it should be suppressed because it's understood that obviously not _all_ ships work this way. Hell, throw in Inquisition-connected representatives from the AdMec that are similarly torn by the idea of either A) torturing loyal machines in trying to see if they contain heretical tech or B ) wanting to do _just_ _that_ and peel apart presumably-faithful machine spirits and their vessels to ensure their purity. And it could end with them just collectively realizing that it's far better to just let things be. Whatever arch-traitor that started the practice is probably long dead, and there's more harm to be done than good by grinding the Imperium's infrastructure to a halt in the name of potentially turning one of its biggest internal allies (the AdMec) against it. It could even be distinctly bittersweet, as the fanatical purists among the AdMec representatives are put down and the more humane Inquisitors are given a choice to fall in line or suffer a similar fate (with the dilemma not only being for the pysker, but presumably also anyone on a ship that thinks it's a machine protecting them only for human weakness to condemn them to a fate worse than death). See? It adds to the misery of the setting without pulling the rug out from under the basic principles of how the universe works. Easy.

That much grimdark, is just too much. It makes the setting unloveable and psychotic. Aka there are transport ships, small ships with 10-100 people. Those too have a tortured psycher? And the small to big ferry ships transporting food and resources? It's very close to grimdirt. I think this could still fit to be in the grimdark category, maybe. The climax of Devastation of Baal was a double dose of grimderp ex machina. A Daemon Prince was able to overcome a binding from Mephisto (psykers should have been rendered to gibbering schizoids from the shadow by this point), manifest through the shadow in the warp, completely shatter the Hive Mind causing well over 50% of Leviathan's net losses, then the Swarmlord skewers Dante like a summer BBQ only for Robot Girlyman to show up at the last possible moment to clean up the mess and somehow able to miraculously heal a dude who, by all rights should have been split clean in half. Girlyman saving the day I can let slide. Effectively ignoring what the Shadow in the Warp does to progress the plot, fuck no.

For me it is the Space Marine trials for new recruits. And the related art work. It looks great, it sounds though ass and the art depicts it as two huge Arnolds duking it out or wrestling some monstrous alien. And then we’re told those are pre puberty boys of like 10 years old. I now it’s the 40k world, but even Cadian kids only just have learned to snipe at that age. And we’re to believe 10 year olds are supposed to pass current day special forces recruitment tests and then hunt for their own breakfast that must consist of a facehugger, two Predators, Chtulu and a T-Rex.

the Banebladepart isnt grimderp. Ive been in naval deployment for almost 3 years straight due to me jumping from ship to ship just to keep going on operations. by the time i was done with that, and my government finaly noticved that i shouldnt do that i was unable to sleep for days without serious medication. you see, on a Military ship, you have a vent blowing air into your face nonstop while you sleep. the first thing, the Techies do when there is a Fire on the ship is turn that off. so that you dont accidently suffocate or poison the whole crew just ebcause theres a fire in one room. that happens even before the alarm is rung. my hotelroom didnt have the constant noise of 50.000 Horsepower gasturbine engine humming in the background nor the vent constantly blowing in my face. the lack of noise and the alarm of "the vent is off, there is fire!" kept me from sleeping. you might not lose your shit right away, but if you are depraved of sleep for days because your body is in nonstop alarm-mode due tot he lack of noise and ratteling around you: you will go nuts.

Yeah, a few of these moments and memes have always stuck with me. I remember when I got into the hobby, back in '03. I was sad that things like the Emperor's Custodes weren't going to get model ranges, nor the Primarchs of each Chapter/Legion, and then I found out about the Grey Knights. I think they had been there before; I remember seeing an even older, more baroque, pewter mini, and think they occupied a space similar to the Inquisitors, where they could just be added to certain lists. When they got their Daemonhunters list, I was excited; they were like Custodes-lite, with their fancier armor, their NF halbreds, integrated storm bolters, and a "roll to hit me" rule almost akin to invul saves, all for the price of 25pt/unit. They've been my favorite chapter of snowflake Space Marines ever since...and then they pulled stuff like other people can't be allowed to see them and live, or the incorruptible Grey Knights couldn't be exposed to this taint, but then they found these Sisters, and... and it wad just really dumb; not "I carry but don't invite a Daemon sword" dumb, or whatever Draigo trying to best portray Constantine Valdor is, but dumb. Still my favorite Space Marines, though. 😆

I would say the penitent engine and mortifiers, I get the idea for harsh punishments for cowardice can lend into the grimdark but these vehicles just sound like they were written by edgy 13 year olds who main Dark Eldar, what a lot of GW writers need to understand torture needs to be grounded in reality and be actually believable in order to have an impact on the reader. Just read any Joe Abercrombie torture scene and compare that to 40k grimderp. Also Dead Sky Dark Sun. If you know then you know.

I've heard it said that the ships use humans because their "cheaper", but when you need to feed them 2,000-2,500 calories a day, plus a couple of litres of water, as well as air, sleeping quarters, ect. they end up becoming quiet expensive in cost, logistics and combat effectiveness.

Think they could lower that number abit or give a good reason why so many people have to die like it gives the Grey knights some kind of power boost as they watch their friends die or something....not just like lul many peple die, dis darkkk

The baneblade thing reminds me of this hilarious movie called My Cousin Vinny. Basic gist is that this Bronx lawyer comes to rural Alabama to defend his cousin in a murder trial, and three nights in a row he can’t sleep: he’s woken up by a factory whistle, then a train going by, and then a screech owl. But then he’s held in contempt of court and taken to jail: cut to him sleeping like a baby as a prison riot rages in the background.
