Making a 16mm movie film developing tank from a PVC sewage pipe, using a CNC mini- lathe, a band saw, dress press, router etc...
This could be made pretty easily with just a saw, a drill and a file, and is sort of a copy of the Lomo UPB-1A tank.
The 3D models and STL's are from here...

What an unexpected career for that length of pipe. To imagine when it was little it was told it was going to be buried in dirt and faithfully carry sewage until it broke. But not even that opportunity became reality as it was left behind at the building site and then spent years uselessly clogging some garage together with all the other stuff that "may become useful some day" but only ever does two weeks after it was finally thrown out. And now it can it can shine. Well, figuratively. It will still be working in the dark. But it did make it into the movie industry!

Nice job, machining plastic presents it's own set of unique problems. Heating and forming PVC now has me thinking! Side note: When I was a kid, I had some infected cuts on my foot, the doctor sent me home with six little potassium permanganate tables with instructions to dissolve one in a gallon of water and soak my foot in it twice a day until the tablets were gone. Three days later the infection was gone and the cuts were almost completely gone as well. It's been fine for 48 years since, so must be some good stuff lol.

You make it look so easy! Pro tip - for clamping squirrelly parts with the C-clamp, put the swivel end on the stable side of the work and use the fixed end of the clamp on the squirrelly bit. Although clamping the squirrelly bit on the swivel end works, as you tighten it you your clamping mechanism also introduces a radial toque which is limited in the opposite orientation.

This is a really cool project. Recycling a drainpipe is inspired! I once tried to design and 3D print a 50ft reel and tank for 8mm film - I found the PETG reel too floppy and rough to load reliably, and the water and chemistry in between the print layers of the tank and it leaked. 😂 then I bought the 50ft Lomo…. For 16mm 100ft film I’ve used a Morse rewind tank… not ideal, but ok for black and white. The new Filmomat manual tank looks promising and well designed - crazy expensive, not not excessive to the asking price for the old 100ft Lomo tanks. Shooting and developing cine film these days is a bit crazy, anyway! 😊
@RotarySMP
@RotarySMP Жыл бұрын
Hi Jason. That is a good summary. A bit crazy :) The new filmomat tanks hadn't released when I started this, but I am too cheap to purchase on anyway. I have also had poor experience with spaghetti printer parts being water tight, so I didn't bother going that route. That GNAL design is worth a look. The base spiral is quite thick, and nice and rigid. Seeing as this was my first ever load of 16mm film, it was pretty easy to use. I am lucky that Jörg is a real master of 3D print, so the reel came out very smooth. I think he used a big nozzle, and it was still a 30H print.

I've seen some people go all in and make a PVC version of a a continuous processing machine. What they essentially do is take a couple PVC pipes and stand them on end, fill them with the chemicals and run the film over rollers in and out of the tanks in a snake. in the old days, I had two different styles of film developing tanks. (three, if you count see-sawing through a bath tray!) The first was a Patterson-tank, which wound the film in by twisting the clear reel at the top. two ball bearings allowed the film through but not back. The Second one was the "Nikkor Reels" which were wound from the inside out, by bowing the film in your hand "width-wise" while you rotated the stainless steel concentric reels with the other. Pretty neat system!
@RotarySMP
@RotarySMP Жыл бұрын
I've also used both over the years. I think the Patterson style is a bit easier for beginners, but the reel has to be bone dry to use it. The metal spiral one which load from the middle are not so critical for moisture. These Lomo spirals are sort of a one side spiral version of the latter.

PETG is really easy to print (almost as easy as PLA), so you could easily print the part that broke yourself if you don't end up wanting to turn it. Just don't print it directly on glass and turn down the parts cooling fan and you're good to go!

1:07 resistant to most chemicals except anything basic in long term or strongly basic in short term (it's an ester, turns into a terephtalate salt and an alcohol), anything that can leech the additives which means most strong solvents like acetone, it's hygroscopic and on that note who knows what other material it loves to cling onto, so... Yeah it's lightly better than PLA but that's it. The only filament that's actually brutally inert is PP (or PE, almost the same thing)

Chemical resistance surely is going to be always a problem. I got an ultrasonic cleaner with the tank full of brake cleaner for cleaning guns, and I already replaced the feet of the metal basket inside with short sections of silicone hose multiple times, but even the usually completely inert silicone soaks up the brake cleaner like a sponge and gets turned into a gelatinous mass.

Hi Alexander. Photo chemistry is a mix of acidic and alkaline baths, mostly not too strong. I expect the most effected will be the paint, and then there will be some chemicals which get into the crevices of the 3D printed parts. Then again, the other option was russian plastic from the 1970's.

Instead of a water wash between develping & fixing, shouldn't you be using a stop bath? Generally just 3% acetic acid in water. That also helps stop your fix getting too contaminated with dev. Regarding silver recovery from the fix - I was an RNZAF photog (in the 1980s) and we had an electrolisys machine for recovering the silver from fix.
