Hey I am actually planning a project for a laptop casing I need something resistant like this bullet proof, heat proof,anti static, shock proof and that is about it.I also intend to use nanotech coatings to increase water proofing and I also need a way to make it as shiny as possible meaning clear as water is that possible to accomplish. What would you recommend!.

I would think you want fmj, solid copper, or steel core rounds to test "barrier" penetration. Hollow points are designed to spread not penetrate. Optical epoxy or bonding films are used to bond plastic and glass layers.
@Techthisoutmeow
@Techthisoutmeow 6 жыл бұрын
Your right about that, I would have used fmj's if I had them, at the time of the testing all I had was hallow points, but i'll be updating this glass as I progress my armor builds. I was worried about using epoxy as a binding agent because I've seen some videos where they ended up cloudy and hazy, But bonding films that need heat might work well, either way version 2.0 will be higher tech for sure, thanks for the comment!

IIR they do make make special epoxies for applications where optical transparancy is a must. I have seen cross cuts of thick polycarbonate only ballistic "glass" with 2 1/4"' plates as the outer layers and a thick middle layer of polycarbonate ( exact thickness depends on what the testing limit of those see through panels was, IIRC 1/2" ). With special shatter proof plastic film between the polycarbonate layers ). Epoxied together ofcourse.

I've expanded my experiments since this first test plate. I've found lexel (clear urethane resin found at hardware stores) to be one of the best binding agents that wouldn't haze the polycarbonate or yellow over time. It's some tough glue. I also experimented with acrylic instead of glass, and that has shown great results ( I have that video up on my channel if you're interested). Anyway, I still like glass plys with polycarbonate between them, but with a bit more refinement and better adhesives, I'll be uploading a new video on this topic soon.

Thanks so much ... I've got five 3'x6' bay windows on the back of my house. I could get 4x8 plexiglass sheets and cut them down to size. Will that work? Or is polycarbonate better?
@Techthisoutmeow
@Techthisoutmeow 4 жыл бұрын
Polycarbonate is way more energy absorbent, however plexiglass is acrylic, and that is used in some bulletproof glass. I do know it has a tendency to shatter rather than lightly crack, but i've never tested it for armor. when it is used I know the glass ends up thicker and heaver, but plexiglass is cheaper. I'll have to grab some and do some tests, see how they compare. thanks for the comment.

@siuolsretlaw8166
@siuolsretlaw8166 4 жыл бұрын
I suggest you perform all these tests without using hollow points. It seems that almost any barrier, object, type of armor or shielding stops them easily as they start expand, deform or break apart upon impact. I mean they are doing what they are supposed to but wouldn't these tests be more useful or impressive if using FMJ or ammo that is intended to penetrate more than expand to make a bigger wound cavity? Great video by the way! Very informative!
@Techthisoutmeow
@Techthisoutmeow 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah, FMJ's would have been better, however hollow points was all I had at the time of testing. Interestingly enough though, the UL rating system and the NIJ use hollow points and gas checked wad cutters for the grading of glass when magnums are used. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h7anmKR107TWe4k.html this is my newest video on ballistic glass, I cover that in the video!

freckleface.com is my favorite place to get polycarbonate sheets, they run specials and stuff like scraps and cut offs. Most of my plastic however was sourced locally from bus manufactures because if the sheets are damaged at all, (like scrapes and scratches) they wont use them, so they throw them out. Polycarbonate is quite costly, so freckleface is a real nice place to go. As for the glass well, I got that at lowes home improvement, they'll cut it there for you as well, and glass is cheap. I payed about $30 bucks for quite a few sheets for various tests I conducted.

Let me make some critiques. 1) hollow points do not penetrate well and are for use on SOFT targets. Use FMJ when testing armored targets. But I'm about to contradict that in a sec. 2) armor has a rating system to tell what the material(s) can handle. While you are well on your way to making nij lvl iiia (3a) armor but using a .357 magnum does not even push the limits of lvl iiia armor. iiia armor is tested with .44 magnum semi-jacketed hollowpoint @ 240gr moving 1430ft/s +/- 30ft/s. that is the nij testing standard for iiia armor. What I'm saying is while you may have a .357 magnum you need to get or find someone to lend you a .44 to test materials like this. I could go into the differences of the two magnums but that's just a long list of nopes when posting it in a KZfaq comment.

Fair point, that's all I had on hand when testing. I"ll make sure to add FMJ in future builds when testing.

I would argue that hollow points are more likely to be what you would be facing if someone was trying to do you harm.

The first shot ruins visibility, so he should compartmentalize the glass or use all plastic.

Didn't I say 1/4 polycarbonate? I guess I said 1/8, my bad, I'll put a note saying the correct thickness. I'm currently doing this project again, using thicker plates of polycarbonate and acryilc and boy, it looks good.

You said 1/4 at first but corrected yourself and said 1/8”. Lol. Yeah would be interested in seeing the process again gl.

Lol yeah, not the first time i've done that. The new stuff I'm working on uses a few different transparent adhesive rather than the oven press method. I also dropped normal glass almost entirely, that way I can thermoform both materials into different shapes like shields and domed face covers. The next video on this will be nuts.

Tech this out meow yeah I think the point of using actual glass in the layers is to keep price down and energy transfer. Thick lexan/plexiglass is crazy expensive!!!! The military and most companies use glass in between layers for a reason.... I think it transfers energy outwards better. Let’s the fragments move between the layers and the shockwave to move outwards. Instead of just forward, cracking the plexi. Most definitely glue/laminate the layers instead of trying to melt them together... unless you couple press and melt at the same time but that’s gonna be speedy and slow to developer. Thin layer of silicone and then press the layer together. Like ultra thin layer. Just enough to get it stuck. Like squeegee the clear silicone ultra thin.
