MakeHuman is a free and open source character creation package that started life as a Blender plugin but was eventually turned into a stand alone software package. We also briefly cover the bad news of Manuel Bastioni Labs shutting down.

Nearly 40 years as a Product Designer for the Offshore Oil Industry, and this may be among the best software intro's I've ever seen. Many of my designs needed either a human for scale or for interaction, and something like this would have been WONDERFUL ! Having retired due to health reasons (10 years in remission !) , I now help folks turn that "great idea" into the next world-changing invention ;=) ! This will be a great help going forward . Thanks for your simple, clear and honest look at what may turn out to be a really useful tool to add to my kit ! All the VERY BEST going forward from Texas !! - Chuck.

IIRC Manuel Bastioni was part of makehuman team from the start, think he was making the base mesh at some point. Then he split off and made his Lab addon. This after the makehuman one changed it so the results of the program was BY-CC (or variant) instead of CC0. In fact, since the upgrade didn't add much in the way of useful changes I hung on to the earlier release where the output was CC0. Now though I would recommend looking into UMA2 for anyone working with Unity. It has the much more permissive MIT license for all it's parts making it a good choice for basing a character creator on.

Wasn't Manuel Bastioni an original member of the Make Human team? Lab really looks like Make Human did when it started as a plug in for Blender 2.25( pre open source). I would like to see a "where are they now" style history of Make Human. They seem to have overcome a lot of obstacles to keep it going. I wonder why they branched into two separate projects.

You don't need to double-click for the geometry, a single click works fine. The muscular topology you selected doesn't make the character more muscular, it just makes what's there more defined. It would have been mote noticeable had the character been topless.

I have been using MakeHuman V 0.9.0 since 2007. I have tried later "upgraded" versions but the original software produced the most accurate human body models of any software I've used since. The topology of the mesh in the 0.9.0 version is based on underlying musculature and this gives the designer absolute fine detail adjustments of every physical aspect of the character. It can make generalized, automatic adjustments to the mesh, but it's real power is the super-fine detail adjustments you can make to individual muscle and other body features. Accurate portrait characters are possible (although a bit laborious) with 0.9.0. I have yet to find any character generator, including later versions of MakeHuman with the level of detail modeling as in this first stand alone version. It's draw backs are that it includes no clothing, no hair, no rigging, and only exports in obj format. Rigging and animation must be done in external software and the exported texture is a fairly simple light and material map. I will try this new version, but ....
@micemincer

It's great to be see programs like MakeHuman being created. Now I'm really hoping for a 3D character generator that focuses on creating animal 3D models & fantasy creatures. I know that a program like this would be a lot harder to create than one focusing entirely on human models but it would be so useful. I would personally want to utilize it as drawing reference. Getting the right reference for animals as well as fantasy creatures can be difficult, if not impossible. 3D seems like the best option to use for this purpose due to the ability to show the models from any angle. However, modelling these characters from scratch can be difficult and time-consuming and not everyone is interested in the process of creating 3D models this way. I would much rather use a 3D character generator for this and place my attention on setting up the scenes to tell the story I have in mind. So, if a 3D character generator for animals & fantasy creatures ever gets created, please feel free to let us know. It would be exciting news.

Is the hair a polygon mesh as well or is it like particles? And can it be exported to multiple file formats? If so how? Also in the Manuel Lab you were able to fine tune ALOT of the small details on the human model like the lip corners, nose bridges, brow etc. Can this do that too? Sorry for the load of questions.
@MrFrostCA
@MrFrostCA 5 жыл бұрын
It depends on which "hairstyle" you give to your character, it can be polygon mesh or particles. Makehuman does not offer a native solution to make hair within the program, it only comes with a few prefabs to add them (and you can add more from the contributions of the community). The good thing is that you can export to many files (it has a great implementation with blender) to be able to model your own hair, even the MHX 2 file when importing to blender, gives you the option to implement a basic hair based on particles. For example, you can export to MHX 2 and import it into blender to have many more functions than an fbx model would have. You can export to .dae, .fbx, .obj, Ogre3D, .stl and MHX (MHX is a separate format that you have to install as a plugin) I'm not sure, but Manuel Bastioni was a project that came from Makehuman (I'm not really sure about it, I repeat). For a long time (even before manuel bastioni had his own page) the page of MakeHuman promoted the work of Manuel bastioni. For this reason, they are almost copies of each other, only that Manuel bastioni works in Blender, and MakeHuman is a Standalone program. At least I have not found differences, although I must say that the models within ManuelBastioni, has a more complex topology, with more vertices, which gives an extra touch of detail.

Great video! Do you know if MakeHuman has a tool for adjusting facial features? NOT to add or subtract geometry, just to move it around. Pinch lips, grow ears, widen nose. And then, hopefully, try to get available extensions to add expressions. I am using DAZ with ZBrush to try to do the same thing, but you have to use "Base Resolution" before going over to ZBrush, via GoZ. My experience was that the mesh would deform in a truly deformed way, no matter how careful I was. ;)

I'm not much of a fan of character creation software, just because I like to have more stylized character models in my games than they generally allow. However, I've been following MakeHuman for a while as it can be a really useful utility when I need a generic human model and I need it fast, for example crowds in the background of a scene.
@simongunkel7457
@simongunkel7457 5 жыл бұрын
With MakeTarget and using MakeCLothes to create alternative geometries you can make MH pull its weight even if you are using very stylized models. Basically if you do a base geometry you can use it as the foundation for MH and if you need additional deformations you can import them to MH as well. What I'd like to see is make armature and support for alternate geometries for MakeClothes and MakeTarget, at that point you can really go crazy with a wide range of creature types, each of which can be morphed in various ways. If you want to do that now, you will have to edit code to make the armatures work.

It's an incredible undertaking to try to make a tool as powerful as manuelbastioni. The community wasn't supportive enough of it and the creator decided if his work wasn't appreciated he wasn't going to continue. His wife even made tutorials on their youtube channel for it. The new guy taking over it is working really hard and now that there's more support behind it I'm hoping it gets even better.

Others are just dark mess and can't do anyrhing with them. Also when I click "save" it didn't save. My version is Makehuman 1.1.1 that I just downloaded. I have seen many videos about this software and they work properly on the videos on youtube. I have no clue what to do. I just want some software (or Blender addon) to use, that uses files that can be used with Blender too. And would have premade bodies to start with. Had i caught the news as it happened, I would have certainly made a video at the time. It went so far under by radar (and almost everyone else's) because the author was so quite and quick about shutting things down. Had he publicly announced a Patreon or fund raising campaign I would have certainly spread that news as well. The entire affair just happened so oddly and at the point I knew, it was a few weeks later and technically old, if mostly unknown, news.

@@gamefromscratch Yes, it was a bit of a miscalculation on his part. I think if only he opened up to the community a bit more (forum or anything) things would have worked out much better, just asking community how they would like to fund the project would crash the servers, but there was no way to get in touch with the developer. And not everyone even heard of it, I had to show it to my friends and others during a gamejam because they only heard about MakeHuman but never about Bastioni Lab or how the two products are related. And I would probably have bought it back then if there was a way to support it (add to my collection of HairTool, SceneCity, etc) and since I was out of the gamedev for a while I was chocked to hear the sad news.

No, it doesn't. The software is a capable 3d modelling software, not a "character creator".

@@BlazertronGames MakeHuman was a plugin INSIDE Blender, There is a Tree, Architect etc.. ways for easy start point, so why not a Realistic Character like in DAZ3D Photorealistic Genesis 8 generation? I don't want to compare it specificly to Daz3D but it's a good example, Render in DAZ3D with iRay is slow, animation in DAZ3D is almost impossible with their limited timeline, even their "plugins" are ancient and not that good. but their Base Models for Genesis 8 is the most Realistic and dynamic one. (I'm talking about the free base-model you can morph and tweak, not the purchase that are even more crazy realistic). Blender 2.8 is now splited to tabs, like different workflows, one of them could be a Character Creation Tab for a good starting point, it will be a great addition for beginners or people who want to manipulate a quick character and rig it using the upcoming new and improved Rigify (which is INSANLY POWERFUL now with the separate limbs option). I don't say it's a MUST, but I think it can help encourage people to try Blender, it will be very inviting to have a dedicated character creation tab instead of moving from Daz3D or MakeHuman or Reallusion CharacterCreator or Adobe's Fusion etc.. just inside Blender 2.8x as a future option, I believe it can be VERY USEFUL for so many people: Create a base (photorealistic or cartoony) Character > Manipulate / Morph / Change it, Apply, start rig using Rigify and animate all inside Blender... and with EEVEE OMG! the fast workflow now is even more attractive! If any Blender Dev would read this, it may spark some ideas and inspiration... I don't think any Blender User won't be curious to try out such feature inside Blender! Sorry about my bad English.

@@MrDanINSANE Well it should stay as a plugin, I'd rather the software be simpler, than having a ton of things built in.

Autodesk have free Character Generator (online tool), only low poly are free though.

You couldnt see the topology applied because it is the mesh... There is a very well made low poly mesh (to help with lod)... Also, and this is really unusual for you, you mentioned nothing on the licenses of the exported models...

Those are muscular topologies not responsible for builds ....for builds you have to add more muscle along with weight....to see the topology to work

"MakeHuman is a free and open source character creation package that started life as a Blender plugin but was eventually turned into a stand alone software package." Wrong, Manuel Bastioni was an fork from make human, that turned into a plugin instead of an stand alone. unfortunately MB was discontinued so the main branch now is make human again
