Hi friends, happy Thursday!
Welcome to the Dark History podcast. Today, we have part 2 of our Josephine Baker story, and we’re learning how this badass performer-turned-Parisian icon became a lowkey secret agent leading up to WW2. She really did it ALL… We’re talking singing, flying airplanes, working against Hitler, and fighting for racial justice in the USA. You see why I had to make this a two parter!? Josephine used her fame to help others. SO LET’S ALL BE LIKE JOSEPHINE, OKAY?! Be a spy. F*** around. Figure it out.
I appreciate you for coming by, and tune in next week for more Dark History.

The dark in this history was that this woman gave and gave, she spied for allied powers, she supplied relief during the war and gave back to her communities and the US Government destroyed her career for a decade because she had the audacity to stand up for herself and her people.

I visited the Pantheon in Paris this year and saw Josephine Baker’s tomb. There were fresh cut red roses on top someone had recently left. She is still very much remembered and beloved by the French.

There's an awesome story about that last performance in London, she was outside for an hour signing autographs, tlaking to people, a little boy was there with his grandparents, she was asking the little boy if his mother knew he was out so late because he should be at home and he shouldn't be there so late and the grandmother by Josephine know that they were taken care of him because his mother was in hospice so she told them to wait while she ran back inside and came back out with a stagehand holding a huge basket full of roses and she gave them to the little boy and told him "tomorrow, give these to your mommy and tell her they're from Josephine".

Edit: I had no idea that Chiquita existed. But suddenly it made me realize that Chiquita and Josephine had a cameo in Anastasia! The Paris song. 🥺 Tia or Tamera Mowry could totally play her in a movie!! It's so sad to hear about her losing her home. 😕

Lynn Whitfield played Josephine Baker in 1990, and it is one of my favorite movies. The twelve children were given up for adoption due to her financial issues, and her animals were sold off to pay debts. Information is based on the 1990 Josephine Baker film. Bravo to Grace Kelly ❤❤❤ Thank you for another fun video 😍
