Hi friends, happy Thursday!
Welcome to the Dark History podcast. So, literally a hundred years ago, America got a huge facelift. I’m talking about new water systems, roads, the whole fabric of the country basically. And, SHOCKER, it has not been updated since!!! That’s a long time without a little revamping, and today, I’m shedding some light on the nasty consequences of all that neglect.
I appreciate you for coming by, and tune in next week for more Dark History.

I live in Austintown, Ohio (just over 25 miles outside of East Palestine. After the train derailment in febuary, anyone within a 30 mile radius of East Palestine was told to avoid their water due to the spill caused by the accident. Even from all the way out here, many people, including my mom, experienced adverse health affects in the following days (headaches, nausea, etc.) and the people we know in East Palestine and close to the train tracks were told it was better to evacuate their homes after the derailment for the coming days/weeks. To this day, the community is still dealing with the aftermath of what happened. It didn’t get nearly enough media coverage, and caused a lot of issues within the community. Thank you for sharing the story!!

It's really frustrating that things like this are going on in America in 2023!!! It's such a shame. I'm sorry that you and your community has had to deal with this disaster. The news reporting has been very bad at best. What has the local or federal government done to fix this? Anything?

My friend lives 10 min away from the derailment site, the police were being very weird about the people trying to prove the local water was still polluted after it was deemed safe :( a group of his friends went to take pictures/document the dead fish in the river and were followed by the police most of the time. He went on the news when it first happened to talk about his animals getting sick from the chemicals.

Speaking of infrastructure failures, I think it would be interesting to hear a dark history episode about the failing water delivery system specifically. For example, it's been over a decade, and Flint, MI is still suffering from their poisoned water crisis

Great job Bailey. Just one little correction. The train in East Palestine did not explode upon derailment. It was set ablaze on purpose because the government officials thought that was a better way to dispose of the deadly chemicals rather than risk moving them. If that sounds like it doesn't make sense, that's because it doesn't. Look into the government's ability to steal land once it's been poisoned, then look into 15 minute or Smart cities. Then it will make sense.

I’m a plumber for the union and I can say from personal experience a lot of us are over worked and under paid so people don’t always care as much as they should. But the contractors are also inlove with cutting as many corners as possible! I see things daily that should be done differently! I recently finished an apartment complex that was already bowing on the first floor, before drywall even went up, because the weight wasn’t properly supported. Just too many people running these companies who don’t care because “I don’t have to live here.” Also Bailey I love you!! You make my break at work enjoyable and I’ve learned so much!

I work in infrastructure IT doing various things for a lot of different clients, I can’t say much about because I love my Job and don’t want to get fired, but I just want to say, thank you for doing this Bailey. This is 100% an issue that needs to be addressed heavily to get fixed. Maybe someone in charge will see this and realize it’s a huge issue. The state where I live had a sinkhole open up on or extremely close to the interstate which obviously needed emergency repairs causing both of the interstate lanes going that direction to be shut down. The DOT had to reroute people through a different road and from what I understand it was super unsafe causing a multi vehicle crash in which people died. People lost their lives because someone didn’t intervene before it got that bad. No one should lose their life because they were traveling. My condolences to the families and people affected by these problems in our nation’s infrastructure.

I live in Southwestern Wisconsin. We had a train derailment in April of this year, and there was also one in 2016. Everything deemed "safe" from these derailments flows south down the Mississippi River. I wonder how many other small towns have things like this happening with more frequency that national news shares. We knew weeks in advance of the most recent derailment that the area was flooded. The railroad makes choices to keep running trains when it's not safe. The cost is our health, the environment, and excessive clean up expenses.

I don't know how government and taxes work over there, but here in the states we pay taxes to keep all this stuff up and safely running but instead our government buys themselves expensive furniture they don't need, takes expensive trips, sends money to other countries before helping our own, and the list just keeps going but what they don't do is what they're supposed to do with our tax money. Like another comment said big companies dump toxic stuff where it shouldn't be dumped and it gets into our soil and water. What happens to them???? Usually nothing more than a slap and the wrist and a little fine. It's disgusting but of course our government loves looking the other way when people hand them "free money"

I'm in NC too and the twon I grew up in has a major used railway. I can't remember for sure but it had to have been 2011 or 2012 we had a derailment. The older side of the mill town had to evacuate due to toxic chemical spills. They left the fallen cars there for over a year. It looked post apocalyptic. Legit one of the scariest things I've seen. The train ran on a hill and I lived 3 streets in front. The sound was horrifying

@@ichimarutetsuboth of these events are awful! and i’ve never even heard of them before. I live in Ohio, luckily quite the distance away from where the train derailed, but it was still a very scary experience

I LOVE the new set! One critique: The audio was a little muffled for me. I’m watching on my TV blasting the volume because the audio makes you sound far away. Perhaps a lapel mic would help? (Idk if those are expensive or not.) Love watching you!

Thinking heavy on the train derailment that happened in my village in like, the 1850s called The Angola Horror. John Rockefeller was supposed to be on that train but missed it. Wild how things happen 😭

Would love to see the cheerleading episode! There are a couple of companies that sell the equipment, run the competitions, etc and it would be interesting to know just how much they've completely taken it over (or began it?).

I know, sometimes I can't remember if I listened to or watched a story, so I'll start it. I'll realize I've heard it. If I know that I've seen or listened to it many times I'll move onto a new one. But if I've only heard it once or maybe 3 times, I'll listen again. I pick up things I missed the first few times.

I love your dark history series Bailey you do such a great job and I learn a lot. It’s funny because I live in New Zealand so you kind of cement all the reasons why I wouldn’t live in America but that’s 😅 I used to listen to MM&M Monday series but since having a baby I don’t have the stomach for it so this is a great way to get my podcast fix ! PS the theme song and your set is so polished you’re truly crushing it 🌹 ❤️ 🖤 🤍 🌹
