I see you use a saw on the lathe here, and I know it's done in woodworking, but I never see it done in metalworking: is it a matter of chip buildup, or wrong speeds?

The pairing operation is one of the more demanding ones so I often saw and and not use a pairing tool. Sawing also let's me keep the rpm lower which can feel more safe, mostly before I had my safety gaurd. Check out my newer video on turning brass on the wood lathe, my technics have changed a lot

what is the Dia of the brass you used 2" or 1"

Awesome work! Just curious ... what kind of turning chisels were you using to turn the brass? HSS? Carbide?

It’s just a cheap chisel. So carbon steel I would assume? Probably not hss. And not a good carbon steel either aha. The most important part is the geometry of the chisel. It’s basically the same type of geometry that machinist use. Im thinking of buying long hss blanks but I don’t have a welder so they need to be like, 10” so I’ll see if I can find that.

@ I know this is late, but you can hold a piece of HSS in a tube using set screws so you don't need a huge piece. Look at Rex Krueger's bowl gouge video

Nice job! You inspired me to make some aluminium tool handles! With a gouge and a skew chisel you can really shape the piece easier than using a metal lathe! How would you shape on that? Probably using a custom made pattern the cutter would follow🤔 many thanks

cylindrical eye profiles are not safe maybe cross pinning is an easy solution, but oblong and reverse tapered are safe, why? otherwise it will spin and eventually it will fly off and hit you in the head., 8 out of 10 YT creators don't get this right!

This is an old video, my newer hammers have a taper and something that stops the spinning. Then again, at this size a head flying off is frustrating more than it is dangerous
