Sliding Mitre saws seldom have sufficient dust collection systems so various means of attachments and add-ons have been developed to make them more efficient. My fabrication is a prototype dust collector version to test the efficiency and to discover any shortfalls in modifying the dust collection of a compact hood close to the blade to help improve the dust collection capabilities. What I learned was very enlightening, read the full article to see detail that could not be covered in the video in detail.

Collecting the dust as close to the blade as possible is the key. This is a good job of doing exactly that. Nice job. You've inspired me! I'm going to give it another try. Thank you.

Similar to a work in progress i began just this afternoon, with the same problems. Yours is simpler. I like that you use whatever you have rather than new sheets of plywood and expensive stuff from the hardware. I live faraway from towns without a car, so resources are hard to come by. I come from a family culture of make do, keep it simple and repurpose old junk. I had to use what i had, which was some scrap bracing ply and the galv. backing of an old flat plate solar hot water collector that I pulled apart. (Very useful those things - glass, copper pipe, brass fittings, aluminium strips, glass wool insulation and a huge sheet of stainless steel.) I cut the ply into two large half disks, one for the base that sits beneath the back of the saw under the dust chute and one for the top that I jigsawed a radius into (like half a donut) to allow for the hinge section of the saw to rotate so I can use the angle adjustments. Some ply cleats glued and nailed to the outer curved edge of each disk allowed me to screw a 200mm wide length of the galv sheet to the cleats connecting both disks together. It looks like a huge round backed dustpan. It doesnt block out the sun either and I can still see the crows stealing my peas out the door. It works a whole lot better than just using the dust collection bag at the back (I took that off so the saw can rotate inside the 'dustpan' enclosure), but I'll use a shroud of some sort to stop the dust from rising out of the donut hole, maybe some pond liner scrap fashioned into a funnel and attached somehow. Magnets, double sided tape, hot glue???. Now all I need is a vacuum cleaner and two buckets.... hmm.

I made a box that surrounded the saw with curtains in front to close off the space and allow me to make angle cuts by adjusting the curtains. At the bottom of the box I connected my dust collections 4 inch hose to collect all the dust. Works wonderful. Doug Guadalajara mx

Just a few days I started to make a kind of dust collection for my sliding mitre saw. But I didn't do it so sofisticated as you did. I mainly tried to attach a hose as close as possible to the saw blade. It helps a little. But I was sawing wood, which does not give so much saw dust. The times before testing any kind of dc I also sawed particleboard/melamine and there the saw dust "production" is incomparable more. Thanks for sharing your approach and also for the link to the forum. I never looked there. I'll do that for sure. When I watched this video for the first time for some reason the screen went black. The video continued and for a moment I thought I was at the dentist's.

I suspect some of your (minute) particles are coming from the saw kerf in your miter table. I had something similar on my older Craftsman cutoff miter saw and that was the one place I couldn't totally control. (I did eventually have a smaller hose under there, too, but the particles still collected in the nooks and crannies). Super video and a great concept, Colin

Really like this idea, great idea. I've looked up plenty of dust collection idea's, but first time I saw this kind of set up. One big thing is, that this kind of thing should be better suited for smaller dust collection systems. Not every one have 4" and bigger systems, with massive motors. Mine is 2-1/2", with a shop vac, so it is kind of limited. I have to wonder, if you took this idea and made it smaller in height and even width. Seems that might make for better suction with a more concentrated area? Not like you really need a huge area. And like you mentioned, getting a better seal on the bottom. The "tent" ones are similar to this, but looks like this would be so much more efficient. Seems like it just needs some tweaks. And so many of the other set ups I've seen, not many are that usable for sliding saws. Love the idea :)

218/5000 The problem is that the speed at which the disc rotates produces wind, and that causes the dust to fly away. The dust collector sucks well, but a lot spreads due to the wind produced by the speed of the saw.

Nice video, I'm planning on going the cumbersome cabinet route, with a down draft floor directly under the saw. I would like to point out that much of the dust that you found behind your collector, and under the saw, got there by going through the blade slot(kerf) in the saw's table, and probably not through the very small openings/gaps that you suspected. Most saw's have this problem, and do nothing to collect the dust that goes through the kerf. The best solution that I can think of is a down draft table below the saw, and taking some steps to seal off the gaps between the outer edges of the saw's table, and the surface that it sits on. Good luck! I'm looking forward to updates!

Maybe a larger hose. More airflow. Miter saws are tough. I haven't figured out a good way to collect dust on mine, but anything that reduces the amount you have to vacuum by hand is a good thing. Good video!

Hi Colin, Great video about chop saw dust collection. My attempt has been to start from both ends of the stick. First I built a triangular plywood box to try to reduce the dust cloud escaping into the workshop and I vacuum this out each time clean the floor. The second method is the Festool type of rubber shroud around the back of the blade that helps the dust to follow the path to the built in dust extraction port. This rubber sheet is tacked onto the chassis with duck tape - not pretty. This rubber dust cute gets chewed by the blade in certain thicker board cuts. The Festool rubber chute metal clip comes off too in the cutting action. Apart from using an air tight room for the chop saw I have not seen a method that gets nearer than about 75% - 80% efficient. Regards Colin in Northern Ireland

I agree with your sentiment about keeping it compact and not having some huge hood thing, but it reduces your compound sliding mitre saw to a plain old chop saw. It's still better than nothing though. While these saws are great, they do create an enormous dust-cloud.

Hi Colin: Great video. We all know how important dust collection is. Besides lowering the suction port, I would suggest having 3 areas of removal. One in the middle (like you have already) and one at each end, all of which can be spliced into one hose adapter. That way the dust is being "caught" by 3 suction areas. Hope that makes sense..... Hi Colin, very intersting an a very good idea. I also got the idea of building such a dust hood. the main problems I see, is that the top of the hood is the way the blade goes up. On my metabo miter saw there ist a thin piece of rubber. this has the function to collect the dust. So if this rubber would be longer and in an wider angle and will then be collected, maye this is worth a try.

I think that I saw dust bouncing off the bowl wall and flying out. Perhaps this is the dust ending up to the sides of the saw. If you made the angle of the walls steeper towards the dust shoot (which would mean further bowl modification) it would keep bouncing the particles more within the vacuum's pull. Maybe...

Good idea. But I think you are going to be in for a big shocking crack up when the saw blade catches unexpectedly on that wood attached to plastic shroud. I would suggest to widen the blade opening some. Better yet, a piece of flexible rubber would be better across the top to be more forgiving in case of a catch by the saw blade. At least a flexible rubber insert. Or make the whole thing out of rubber, like some go- cart tire. Which might be about the right diameter size and width. I just don't like the sound of shattering plastic and splintering wood.

Suction through those small pipes on a high volume vac isn't the most efficient or actually very inefficient with little suction power. Would be great to see if you hook that up to a normal shopvac on the same small vac pipes. Even better take the big pipe and squeeze it down (oval) and make a hole in the $1 bucket that is as big as the pushed down pipe. This will give you the high volume suction using the whole pipe diameter... Would love to the the difference in all of those...

The blade throws much of the dust under the saw turntable where it cannot be picked up by any dust collector above the turntable, at least with a miter that does not slide. I have tried enclosures around the entire saw as well as dust collectors much like yours. Nothing really works well. Try adding a 2nd dust collector below the turntable. If you don't need a portable saw, the best solution for dust collection is an old style radial arm saw where all the dust can travel unimpeded into a collector directly behind the blade. Nothing can get below the saw table and nothing is in the way of the dust. Radial arm saws easily collect 90%+. Wish I had kept mine instead of trading it for a miter saw.
