Description:
In all of my videos it’s my goal to help you Maximize Your Shop!
In this video I demonstrate the effectiveness of my simple dust collection modification for a DeWalt 12" Compound Miter Saw. The Dust collection improvements can be made within 30 minutes and for under $10. This modification consists of a two-piece dust hood and conical shroud that better enclose the blade and allow shop-vac dust collection air flow to better collect the chips as they're generated. I also detail how I made the upgrade and show the drastic improvement in dust collection 90 degree cuts (which this modification is optimized for).The materials used in this project were:
1. Rubber Drawer Liner
2. Small rare earth magnets
3. Copper Wire
4. Utility knife

This video is part of improving and building my bench-top micro shop where I maximize what I can do with a small wood-shop and bench-top machines.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with dust collection hacks. Alas, I have a sliding mitre saw and am worried about the potential of the shroud method snagging on the blade. I will, however, have a go at extending the existing dust collection shroud to see how it performs. Again, I can't thank you enough for sharing your experience. Most of the other dust collection hacks seem to involve restricting the tool's ability to perform anything other than straight cuts, as the full enclosure solutions make mitres or bevels impossible. Of course, the Festool is an excellent 'off the peg' solution to dust collection. But, as you say, it's a question of available funds.

Chris- thank you so much for an extraordinarily clear set of videos. Your whiteboard explanation in a previous video as well as this one are very clear. I have the same miter saw, and thought the collection shroud must be broken because it is so far from the blade. Crazy that they don't offer a better solution stock. I had the same experience as you, where connecting my 4" dust collection system reduced the amount of sawdust (and eliminated most of the big pieces) I still had cloud of dust to deal with. I will seek out the material you used and fashion a similar guard for my setup based on your video. Thanks again!!

Always working in a confined space and exhausted for dust cleaning from time to time. I have a 10 inch miter saw which is enough in capacity but the dust collector is terrible. Looking for a miter saw with the best dust collector for long time and never had any satisfied answer. This method is so great that I don't have to spend big money to buy a new saw but to spend only some 20 dollars with a result better than all miter saws in the market! Many thanks Chris!

Chris, watched both videos about your miter dust collection, great idea! I have been looking for a better solution, never thought about something like this. I will be getting this built in the next couple of days. Also, FYI, I just upgraded from my shop vac to a small WEN dust collector, it really "sucks". It was $100 online so not much more than a shop vac and it works very well. Only thing is its for dust only. I can not longer suck up small scraps/chunks because it has a built in screen to protect the fan blade. Buts its much stronger than my shopvac and I don't need to use blast gates on each line.

Agree with your emphasis on dust collection. thank you for sharing your efforts with the dust collection on your miter saw. I am setting up my shop and looking for various opportunities to improve dust collection in general, but more specifically for my sliding compound miter saw. I currently have a Kobalt 12 inch dual bevel sliding saw and thinking about changing to the Bosch 12 in saw - so I am looking for various options that could apply to each. I observed how Dan Pattison built his dust collection for the Bosch.

Great video. Why the big manufacturers haven’t figured out that dust collection is a major factor for any work indoors. I’m a General Contractor and have mainly Festool tools based on the sole reason of their dust collection capabilities...I can easily justify the cost over a couple of jobs based on less mess at the customer site especially when doing work on occupied premises. I also have Dewalt chop saws but only use them outside.

I’ve tried several methods to collect the loads of sawdust that my mitre saw puts out. These were sold structures of wood with various sliding gates to restrict scatter; none worked really well and in addition were bulky . Your adaptation makes sense and while I’m sure that no design will allow 100% collection, it looks like it does the best confining of the scatter. I like also that it allows angle movement of the saw in any plane with no restrictions. I’m going to use pond liner rubber of which I have quite a bit and it’s thick and won’t collapse easily. If the installation and any mods help I’ll send you a video. Thanks for the idea.

I made something similar the other day out of thin cardboard, covered with silver gaffer tape, with a tape skirt where it comes into contact with the fence, all held in place with bolts already on the saw. Not perfect but much better than the standard collection. I've got some old roofing rubber sheet offcuts & will have a go at refining the design, following this idea even more closely. I think the current card & tape design works but a thick rubber version should be more hard wearing. Thanks for the inspiration.

I’ve been fiddling with this, and I just about have something that works, but it wasn’t easy. I think my Dewalt saw is older than yours, and it has an angle stop that sits in front of the dust port, and it pushes the lower cone into the air stream when you lower the saw. It also interferes with placement of the support wire, so it’s all a bit wonky. I think I might try the needle and fishing line to fix the wire to the hood so it doesn’t get displaced when I lower the saw. Thanks for sharing this, though, it was a great starting point for me.

Andrew, I'm glad it helped as a concept and starting point. I've talked to a lot of people about this problem over the years, we've come to some better alternatives along the way. If there are other more rigid ways you might make a frame to support the drawer liner (3D printed material, plastic bottle, etc may work) best with your modification. Thank you for watching, I'm glad you found some value in it and that it was a jumping off point for you.

The miter saw is a great tool that will probably kill all of us from the fine dust we don't see until it's all over the shop the next day. My miter saw is mounted on a mobile cabinet in my garage/shop. I have made several different hoods and scoop/funnels but there is always that fine dust that escapes. I suggest that if your shop is in a garage, use the miter saw so the back faces the open garage door. Mine is hooked up to a central vac. I place a patio fan which is about 3 feet high behind me on the highest speed when I use the saw. I've found this is the best thing for that fine dust. Between the funnel collector, the central vac and the fan behind me almost no dust is in the garage the next day. I still want to try an enclosed hood I try your type of funnel. Thanks for the good video. Guys - try a fan behind you and an open door!

I just bought the Dewalt DWS 799 Miter Saw, and the dust chute/guide is different. The problem I was having is when I attached my dust collection the suction was too strong and collapse the thin rubber chute/guide closed. My solution was to take the dust port and tube out and wrap the thin rubber chute with Gorilla black tape. This really reinforce it and when hooked up to the 2HP Dust collection the chute did not collapse shut anymore. In addition I added a chute extension like you did with rubber liner and that made it perfect. Thanks for the idea.

Awesome jcherb, glad to help! It pumps me up to see how motivated you are. You should've seen me the day I made it...I was very thrilled! I told my wife, "I think I just revolutionized miter saw dust collection!" She's not a woodworker and was less than amused at my excitement. I do think the best option for those with high-flow collectors are the shrouds with tight clearances around the saw.... but they are complicated little builds and you need to have the space to do it.

A very useful addition is an automatic switch that turns the dust collector on the moment you start the saw and turns it off a few seconds after the saw is off. If you are making a lot of cuts, chances are you will forget to turn the vac on more than once. There are commercial automatic switches available but it is easy to build one from parts off eBay or Amazon.

Seeing how flexible the material is and where it is mounted, do you see any issue with this technique working on a sliding bevel compound miter saw? It seems that nothing would get in the way unless the angles pinch the material and put it into the blade path.

Allen, I think it would work well. I've used my setup with compound cuts. My shroud has some blade nicks from blade contact due with fence and it pushing material into the blade over the past few years. Really no risk and material is cheap enough to replace if nicked.

Hi Bill, glad to hear of the dust collection success. I used some leftover 10 or 12 Gauge solid wire and bent it into a long "U" shape that has somewhat of an "L" profile to it that holds the bottom of the cone down. I'm away from my saw/home currently and unable to measure. I bent outward hooks on the end of the wire and "hooked" it on the corregations of the shop vac hose beyond the stock port. There is one picture of it here: instagram.com/p/BsGi6i9gBYe/?igshid=ye4tfbryxxae If i did it over, and I may at some point as a demonstration...I might use the same wire, but make an external frame on the outside of the cone. I would attach it with gorilla tape or use a needle and fishing line to thread it to the outer edge of the cone. I hope that helps! Thanks for watching, and following up. I added a free template download to my website for the cone if you would like to use it.

Chris, I successfully completed the dust “corral” for my saw. But I ended up going in a completely different and originally unthought of direction. The 715 is made up mostly of aluminum components which does not provide any or enough points to attach anything magnetically. I ended up using 3 parts fabricated from aluminum baking sheets ($3.00) that I adhered to the saw with double stick tape and Gorilla tape. Captures all but the tiniest amount of the dust. Let me know where to send pics if you’re interested. Thank you for the initial motivation to improve the dust capture for one of the two dustiest machines in my shop

@benchtopwoodworks
@benchtopwoodworks 3 жыл бұрын
No, it moves with the head/ blade for miter cuts. The shape of the inner boot/outer shroud prevents them from interfering through the range of my saws miter angles. For beveled cuts it it flexes when it contacts the fence. Mine has some blade nicks after 3 years of use from being pushed into the blade / flexing, but nothing unsafe or catastrophic. From my perspective the drawer liner is cheap enough and safe enough to have around the blade I could replace it every once in awhile if needed.

Worked out even better than I thought it would to be honest. Hooks straight up to the shop vac now and the connection is snug to the point where I don't even need a hose clamp between the two. After this experiment I guess I can go ahead and hook it up to the rest of the 2" pvc system with the cyclone and add the hood from your video to make it 'perfect'. Could probably heat the plastic bottle up around your choice of adult beverage to make a tapered end so you'd end up with a male and female side, if the thin plastic can handle it without buckling or collapsing when you slip on the shop vac that is. i.gyazo.com/d810c91078d4b6d1133a242415b303f1.png
