Making A Leather Coin Wallet THREE Different Ways !!!
Making a leather coin wallet is a simple and easy project to learn leather craft or just use up smaller pieces of scrap. We decided to show three different ways to make a leather coin wallet by hand, as we think it's important to show just how many different ways a strong handmade leather product can be made!
The first leather coin wallet we made was using a pattern we designed. This coin wallet is a bit more complicated as we had a pattern to follow - we cut the pattern by hand, cut the leather, then used a saddle stitch to put it all together and finished with a nice hand burnish.
The second leather coin wallet was made freehand, we just looked at what we had for scrap leather and and cut out shapes that worked well. Then we did a simple squeeze flap style coin wallet that was again saddle stitched by hand with waxed poly threads. This time we used our burnishing machine as the edges were nice and straight, and we polished up the edge to a nice sealed finish.
The last leather coin wallet is a good example of the type of production work you can achieve with some simple design and a few bigger tools. We used a cutting die to punch out the piece, and the leather coin case was designed to be held together with just the hardware - so once the snaps were installed we were done! This is a good method for adding low-cost, high quality small goods to your line if you are selling your leather projects, and it's also a good method to produce many pieces fairly quickly if you've got lots of gifts to make (or make the same silhouette often!)
A big huge thanks to our sponsor Weaver Leather for supporting us in this video!

I've been watching your videos for a short while now, and I am in love with what you do. Plus your generosity is wonderful. Thank you for that. The handmade leather market is so huge, it makes sense to share knowledge and designs because no two hands will ever work leather the same. We're all doing our best and are in this life together even if we don't know one another personally. Heading over to your website to see if I can find these patterns, or at least one of them. You spark such a fabulous sense of creativity, as well as make it seem that even I can do this. It's GREAT! ❤

Just an idea: Your first design might also work with a magnetic bill fold incorporated on the back of the coin section. Bills and coins in a leather package. I may try it myself.

i have a question..... when you burn the threads, is there a knot below? or do you just thread through a couple times to keep it from unraveling? i love these videos but have never done leatherwork.
@Corter
@Corter 5 жыл бұрын
no knot :) backstitch 3 just like a sewing machine, then melt the thread ends. We use synthetic thread so it melts down and creates a seal on the stitch that won't unravel

Looks like you used two different weights in the patterned version. Was that about 2.5mm on the outside and 1mm inside? (Metric sorry, I'm English! 😄) I've cut a similar design myself, but I don't have as nice leather as you used. Great video as always. 😊👍

First up, love the vids! Second, I’ve never done any leather craft before and I’m curious as to what the tools was on the “offside” of the sander is? At a guess it looks like a piece of timber with grooves in it that you put bees wax on? I liked the first and third designs in this vid. Second seems too bulky. All very simplistic designs and look great nonetheless.
@Corter
@Corter 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! That's a burnishing wheel, burnishing raw edges of leather seals and protects it from moisture over time by slicking down the fibers and bringing up waxes and oils from the core of the hide. You can use different types of wood or bone or canvas to create the friction needed to burnish, and then we seal the edges of that piece with bee's wax for extra protection :)
