If you have ever wondered how to go about creating a pen blank with polymer clay, then this is the video for you.
In this video I will show you how I created one of my pen blanks, a a selection of flower canes, resulting in a lovely garden scene.
I have filmed the whole process (for one of the 2 blanks required per pen), but I know it can seem to drag on a bit, so please feel free to skip through any of the boring parts, and all the way to the end to see the finished product.
If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to leave them below or contact me, and I will do my best to answer you.
Thank you for watching and if there are any other polymer clay related content that you would like to see, let me know!

Easy to see why the bushings are necessary to having a professional finish, first time I have heard of them. Thanks for sharing.

When woodturning a pen blank..or a sewing ripper etc. The bushings have to fit the brass inserts.

Have you tried nail transfer foil rolls!! ~ To stop the dents use two acrylic blocks to roll between!!
@ArtbyAnnaCL
@ArtbyAnnaCL Жыл бұрын
Thanks Lisa. I don't like acrylic, but I know it can be useful. You might have noticed that I am messy and my space tends to be super cluttered. When you leave raw clay on acrylic, it melts and makes a huge mess, I know because I have done it - more than once. Glass coasters work really well for this, but again, trying to find it when I need it in my chaos tends to be problematic. 😅

Polymer clay is baked in an oven or toaster oven. The baking instructions are on the clay packet
@ArtbyAnnaCL
@ArtbyAnnaCL 5 ай бұрын
@michelle is correct. Most polymer clay brands bake at around 130 C, but it's always best to follow the instructions provided. A home oven works well for this, but most of us have a dedicated toaster oven for clay projects.

Where do you buy your pen supplies? I’ve found PSI & Rockler. Rockler seems to be a little less expensive, but wondering if you experienced both companies & the quality of their kits.

I have not bought or made any pens for a few years now, but in my experience PSI was wonderful. The kits were always high quality but the shipping to AUS was quite expensive...

Great video, nice detail! With regard to finishing, do you polish the pens or use any finishes?
@ArtbyAnnaCL
@ArtbyAnnaCL 3 жыл бұрын
The finish is really up to you. Polishing it generally leaves a soft satin like finish, which i love, but you van also add a few coats of CA and that gives a beautiful glassy finish.

Do you sand it and seal it with anything?
@ArtbyAnnaCL
@ArtbyAnnaCL 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, after the blank is baked and cooled, I sand it with 400 and 600 wet dry sand paper. You can go up to 12000 if you want to keep the bare clay, which has a lovely satin texture. Be careful not to sand too much though, as the cane slices are so thin, they can be sanded off... The next part is optional, but I like to make my pens super glossy, and for that I use CA. 5 - 10 evenly applied coats followed by more sanding and polishing.

Why not apply pressure to your bushings or knitting needle to get a more even result? No finger indentations. Just a suggestion and to add great job! Pen looks amazing and very useful information for my pen projects.

I guess its one of those things that you have to find what works best for you and your artistic rhythm. This way works for me, but it is by no means the only or even the right way to do this. I will try on my next pen to follow your suggestions, thanks!
