I just picked up a DB 200 yesterday, so of course I've spent all my free time since playing with it, and cleaning up and restoring it as necessary. Neat to see it in action with someone more skilled than myself, thanks for posting this!

Enjoy, I learnt how to use a Lathe from YT vids . All the expert tuition needed is out there. - Post some project vids when you are up and running - it adds another dimension to the hobby.

I have this lathe and there is something still in it from an old project but I can't seem to loosen the 3 jaws to take out the old thing. I have the two metal rods that it looks like youre supposed to use to tighten and loosen the jaws, but its super tight. idk what to do.
@SteamerEdge

Hi, I suggest a penetrating lubricant in an aerosol spray can, spraying will force the lubricant into the moving parts of the chuck under pressure. Wait for a good while for the lubricant to penetrate, then try to loosen the chuck using the short steel pins provided. Be careful NOT to use longer pins for better leverage, I have seen many UNIMAT 3 JAW chucks damaged by use of excessive force when loosening or tightening the chuck. You could also first try to remove the chuck from the headstock spindle by unscrewing it form the headstock spindle using the chuck pins Once the chuck is removed you can remove the back of the chuck by unscrewing the 3 screws at the back of the chuck. You will then have better access to lubricate the 3 chuck jaw splines.

friend one last question, excuse me, when you use the drill column, you can lock the depth?, or it is necessary to hold the hand lever, it would be interesting milling, thank you
@SteamerEdge
@SteamerEdge 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, the drill column can be locked at any depth - there are two locking bolts next to the base of the lever.

Hi buddy, I'm the proud owner of an Emco Unimat 3 small lathe, and I've noticed that recently, when I try to machine long parts, they slip out of the jaws, no matter how much I fit the jaws, the part slips anyway. I've fully disassembled the chuck, cleaned and oiled, but nothing changed. Do you have any idea of what can be happening to the chuck?
@SteamerEdge
@SteamerEdge 7 жыл бұрын
Hi, I've never had this problem. I am not an expert but here are some suggestions : Remove the chuck jaws and carefully check that the splines located on the headstock side of each chuck jaw are not damaged in any way - look for excessive wear and cracks. These splines are brittle and delicate on the Unimat lathes and will crack, wear or break easily if the chuck is used in a way it was not designed for. This spline damage may cause that particular jaw to slip when tightened under load. I've had this problem before which requires complete chuck replacement because, as far as I am aware , the set of chuck jaws are no longer available anywhere. Check that there is no lubricant on the part of the chuck jaw that is clamped against the work and use of the steady rest, if you are not already using one, will help to take some of the load off the chuck when machining longer bars. :-)

Great job, being a new sl owner I’ve been having issues cutting brass on mine, can I ask what speeds your turning and the ground on the tool it is a hollow grind? I’ve tried all speeds available with a brand new hss set but my finish is rough. Any advice would be appreciated
@SteamerEdge
@SteamerEdge 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, I grind my Lathe tools in the conventional way. Do a YT search for the video on my SteamerEdge channel entitled all "All about the Emco Unimat SL Lathe" At 1:10 in this video I discuss turning speeds and I show a diagram which shows pulley belt settings for the different speeds. As a general rule :- As the diameter of your work goes up the Turning speed RPM must come down, and, if there is chattering or you hear any higher pitch noise while Turning then the Turning speed it is too fast and you must use a slower Turning speed. I almost always use 850 RPM ( Belt Setting #3) or 685 RPM ( Belt Setting #2) for Turning and 365 RPM ( Belt Setting #1) for Drilling.

Hi, I'm building the engine and I have a doubt on the valve. Are the 2 grooves A and B offset by 90 °? Thanks and greetings from an Italian in the Canary Islands
@SteamerEdge
@SteamerEdge 5 жыл бұрын
Greetings from Cape Town :-)) No, I made that mistake at my first attempt. The exact positioning of the grooves is difficult to understand from the plan. When viewing the valve cylinder from the one end, or, side view :- The length of each groove is exactly half the circumference of the cylinder. The 2nd groove is positioned to start exactly half way along the length of the first groove. To check that you have it correct, the portion of each groove that is adjacent to the other groove should be exactly half the length of the groove. Hope this helps.

Hi, thanks, the drill chuck shown in the video is the standard Unimat Lathe drill chuck, It is very good quality and accurate and it is now over 45 years old. I do also have a Unimat collett chuck , not shown in this video. Cheers Paul

hello friend, great job, you've earned a subscriber, a question, I'm thinking about buying this same unimat lathe, you recommend?, As advances graduation roulette? this has no numbers, what kind of metal is able to work with 90W power?, regards from spain
@SteamerEdge
@SteamerEdge 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Greetings from Cape Town. Yes, my lathe is over 40 years old and it is the EMCO UNIMAT SL. It has a 90w motor - very capable little lathe for turning work up to about 30mm diameter and maximum turning diameter is about 58 mm .( You reverse the chuck jaws to hold the larger work.) For larger diameter work you have to be patient, keep the lathe tools sharp and take fine cuts as the lathe motor is very small. The precision Drill press and Milling capability is easy to set up and works well. The EMCO UNIMAT 3 has a more powerful motor as well as other improvements. I have successfully turned brass, aluminium, cast iron and mild steel on my UNIMAT SL - these lathes were made in Germany so they have metric graduation on the handwheels

Hi, great video! Would you mind adding a list of parts for people to buy if they fancy trying this please? I’ve tracked down the old instructions online but it has no complete materials list and as a novice/absolute beginner knowing what to get is a good start 😉 thanks very much!
@SteamerEdge
@SteamerEdge 6 жыл бұрын
Hi, type the words "River Queen Open Column launch engine kit plans" on the GOOGLE search bar. This will lead you to a link where you can download the plan and building instructions for this steam engine. When reading the building instructions the materials needed are clearly detailed. Part of the fun of building model steam engines is first spending a considerable time studying the pan and building instructions to make sure you understand them and then constructing your own material requirements list. Here is a tip : - when the building instructions call for machining a piece of brass round bar to a certain diameter it makes sense to start off with a piece of material ( round brass bar ) which is slightly larger in diameter than the machined diameter in the plan. This will eliminate machining waste and cut down on machining time :-) Small diameter brass tubing by K & S engineering is available at most hobby shops worldwide.

@@AHTiraq - Maximum diameter I have turned is 70mm. You need to raise the head lathe head stock centre height using the intermediate piece. I demonstrate this process turning a 70mm diameter Flywheel in my video entitled "All about the Emco Unimat SL Lathe " on my steamerEdge channel. cheers Paul.

Yes, I have done some machining on Mild Steel and Cast Iron. Good quality Lathe Tools are essential. The Lathe motor is very small so all machining is very slow and you need to be patient.
