Making a Steering Wheel From Scratch (DIY time-lapse) [BMW e28]

I design and make a steering wheel from scratch for my BMW e28.
I've seen a handful of videos in which people make their own steering wheels, but they often are for prewar cars and involve re-using most of the old steering wheel. I haven't seen anyone make a contemporary motorsport-style steering wheel similar to MOMO, Nardi, etc. That's what I do here.

For those who don't have 40 minutes:
00:35 - CAD modeling
04:06 - testing the hub and horn button
05:37 - woodworking - dimensioning stock for the wood grips
12:26 - cutting the steering wheel on a waterjet
16:05 - milling the wood grips on a CNC router
18:04 - preparing the aluminum steering wheel for finish
20:42 - adhering the wood grips to the steering wheel
24:08 - adding a center inlay
26:33 - steam bending walnut strips to fill the gap between the grips
28:51 - finish sanding the grips
30:00 - applying finish to the grips
31:55 - installing the steering wheel
34:28 - test drive

@@olsenautofix the car is already in pristine condition as is. While DIY is cool, especially when done this good- some things shouldn't be messed with. While shifter is often done to match the wheel, thought didnt cross my mind when watching the video but know what did?- wow, thats a clean sexy shift knob. P.S. i doubt you will put your money where your mouth is but ill be surprised if $20 reaches him.

@@FOURfabrication ive just watched the video. You did a good job once again. Again, im not sure shift knob needed changing but indeed it matches tastefully and im assuming key is next on the list lol. Perhaps if i were you i would've made custom steel "dogleg shifting diagram" to match the wheel vibe rather than to match center cap for the horn. P.S. i drive a w124 ce with only 70k km on the clock and its quite an attention grabber despite being nothing special. Despite the low mileage however its in significantly worse condition than yours. Even if you wont show flaws on video and are aware car is not museum quality you should take great pride in both machine itself and your work (DIY and maintenance) over it. Cheers

This was absolutely worth dedicating almost 40 minutes to. There's something about hand crafted parts in an old Bavarian car that just cant be replicated in modern cars, even though that wheel is now the most "modern" thing on your E28, as well as the satisfaction of looking at something like that and getting to say "I made this." Beautiful work, dude.

Seeing this video reminds me that we all should do in life what makes us happy. There is more than just working your 9 to 5 job and other repetitive things. This guy has a fabulous vintage car and spend a lot of time and passion to create a unique steeringwheel with his own hands for one of the things he loves most....

Great job. You used the same techniques I did about 15 years ago. I made a steering wheel for my brothers mahogany speed boat. Really brought back memories. I even clamped the boards with pipe clamps like you did. I built one more recently and basically made an octagon with the wood and tenoned the sections together. I also rabbited the inside so the split rim halves wood hide the outer section of the aluminum rim.
