When it comes to songwriting, a great chord progression or melody is obviously at the top of your priority list but if you want elevate your songs from ones with a solid melody to those magical songs people just can't get out of their heads then you're probably going to need a "hook."
In this Super Neat Beat Cheet Sheet episode, Ryan introduces us to the concept of hooks, clears up some common misconceptions, and walks us through some techniques we can use to add hooks to our own music.

I like how you explain electronic music production with punk rock examples. I hate how every fucking song on the radio has the stupid "hey" all over it. I kinda appreciate the fact that I know why that is happening now.

Marc Laflamme hahahahahhahahaha that really made me laugh cause i can relate. Keep experimenting and most importantly listen to a LOT of music. All sorts of genres but make sure you enjoy it. Melody writing will become natural.

i feel like the balance between predictability and unpredictability that we prefer is different for everyone. i feel that this is why some people enjoy catchy music and others just can't stand it.

Good observation. It's interesting to note how the mainstream appreciates repetitive predictable radio pop music while 'refined' tastes prefer the likes of classical music - which is much less predictable and more of an ever-changing and evolving flow.

Reason Essentials is 1/4th the price of Reason's full version but has very many of the same features. The rack and cabling power is all there. The Rack Extension instruments are available, too. And there's a cross-grade version available to the full Reason version when you're ready to move up to the full feature set. It's worth checking out if you're interested in getting into Reason in the easiest way possible. /ryan

Hey Ryan, great tutorial, its going to give me some help in the studio! I have a question or a request rather. In like the first 10 seconds of the video, where the opening song comes in, can you make a tutorial on how to create that lead synth? It sounds like a sawtooth but I'm not sure, it sounds super clean. If anyone else has any idea or knows how to do it as well, it would be really helpful! Thanks!
