Making Drive Belts for Model Engines

A demonstration of how I make small drive belts for my Stirling Engines using Duct / Gaffer tape which is easier to obtain than the Book Binding tape shown on my previous video.
Using this method you end up with the layers exactly on top of each other whereas my previous method was OK for larger belts when you get to smaller sizes it becomes more critical.

For really small belts (think Wilesco sized-ish models) drive belts for ancient floppy drives work wonders. There are quite a few sellers on Ebay offering newly made replacement belts for such drives. Though I bought them for a drive of mine, a lot of them ended up being amazing for model engines. Great video, will definitely try this!

you know sometimes old tvs have this braided metal grounding strap in them about an eighth inch wide, these might work well if they were impregnated with a silicone or other rubber for grip...

Simon, the problem with using that material would be joining it, if you soldered it there would a hard lump also it would stretch, I was a radio/ TV engineer for fifty three years before retirement and am familiar with the material you mentioned. I don't think using silicone would help as it is slippery.

Hi, i can see the tape is 3M but can you supply the actual ordering name ie gaffer tape or such please. I am guessing you wind the first tape on sticky side out, and the second winding dticky side in?

Sorry I can find no order name or number, I think any of the so-called duct tapes will do the job OK. You are right in assuming the first layer is sticky side out.

From the video 3M Gaffer/duct tape, if that was a bit of a challenge for you, I don't think you'll be knocking up a Stirling Cycle Engine and generator any time soon.
