I'm so sick of the mindset of "family is family, look at what they've done for you, you're just ungrateful/selfish, etc." NO. Family doesn't always mean blood relatives. Being biologically related to someone or being related through adoption or marriage DOES NOT make someone family. How people treats you is what counts, not just what they did for you but how they treated you overall. You can do a lot for someone and still be toxic and still create trauma or pain towards others. Just doing something for someone else doesn't excuse a person's actions, people still have to be held accountable for their actions. Setting boundaries and telling someone what is acceptable vs unacceptable to you doesn't make a person selfish or entitled. You don't throw what you've done for others back into their face if you were truly trying to give them a gift or help them out- that's called a guilt trip, and it's toxic AF.

The old adage, "no good deed goes unpunished" applies here. The defendant adopted the plaintiff at eight years old. She wasn't family or anything. The defendant did it out of the goodness of her heart. The plaintiff, along with her girlfriend (who wouldn't leave) were adults and capable of moving anywhere they wanted. At the first sign of a problem they could have moved. Bleach, a little elbow grease and a sealer, along with ventilation, could have solved the ptoblem. The defendant was aware of the mold long before the planttiff started living in the apartment. Every time she painted over it, she was doing nothing to remediate it. She was covering it up. She knew damn well that there was not only mold but TOXIC MOLD in the house, and still let the planttiff live there. She'll be lucky if they don't suffer any long-term effects from it. You don't have to live in a toxic mold environment for very long to do permanent damage to the body that may take years to show up. The last person that lived there could already be very sick, painting it does not stop the mold, it actually makes it worse. It spreads the mold around, and the spores are already in the house. The entire house has to be inspected, and the mold removed by a specialist that is trained in toxic mold removal. This defendant was extremely negligent by letting the first person stay in the house, knowing that it's an unsafe habitat, and then letting the planttiff live there afterward without so much as telling her about it. I can't believe that no one told the planttiff not to remove the mattress and box spring from the house. Mold spores are air borne and the bed is undoubtedly filled with spores that will continue to grow and cause damage, nothing porous should have been removed from the house and everything else should have been professionally cleaned prior to moving. She knew exactly what she was doing and didn't care. It was all about the money to her. Now she (the show) gets to pay out money for her negligence and she can live with the fact that she could have made the people "she loves" deathly ill, only time will tell, I hope she's proud of what she's done.

Mother or not, she was still the landlord. The landlord has a legal responsibility to take care of mold and other health hazards in the place. She should have put her daughter and her g/f somewhere while the problem was being solved. You can't just say "move" and not give them assistance. Even if it was a month to month, she's still a tenant and has certain legal rights in place that mom seemed to just ignore. Telling your child "if you want any $$ for your ruined stuff you'll have to take me to court" just goes to show that the mother still takes no accountability in the whole thing. None of it would have happened if they took care of the mold when the last tenant complained. Instead she just had it painted over and then put her child in there. Imagine intentionally putting your child into a place that you KNOW has mold already. It's sad that it took the health dept being called to get anything done in that place.

Exactly... get out... Just like they should have reported her to the city to get her contemned, to get her fined thousands of dollars, sued for being a slum lord, plus more. Her duties as mother ended, so both women should have went all the way in taking her down for being a slum lord who didn't give a dmn about their health and well being. 😂😂 You sound like a joke. She wasn't giving them a home for free. They were her tenants, meaning she owed THEM an obligation to make sure their home was safe. That is what is required when you accept someone as a tenant. Imagine being 22 years old and trying to live an adult life. Then imagine your stuff is infested with mold. You cannot afford to pay for another bedroom set, clothes or anything else that you lost due to the mold infestation. Your landlord doesn't want to make a payment plan with you and basically tells you to move out and figure it out. How do you recover from that? Mother or not? I would give my children the opportunity to move in with me without their partner. Let their partner figure it out with her family. If my children decide that they want to stay with their partner while I try to work on getting them their stuff back then that's their problem. The other tenants in the home complained and went to the building department. The proof is in the pictures. IT WAS INFESTED WITH MOLD. THEY LOST SOME OF THEIR VALUABLES. That's the main issue. Pay the ladies.

Which I believe she implied that a little bit in the beginning . And the only thing I heard the daughter complain about that was damaged was the bed set but the girlfriend complained about her own clothes. No one should live in mold but I really think we're missing a piece in the story that neither party is talking about.

I understood early on how to discover & deal with black mold with simple bleach water & we never lost anything to mold damage, except a few tomatoes from the garden.😉🍅🍅🍅 The problem here is that these ungrateful, disrespectful children, don't even have the proper skills to live on their own & regularly clean up their own place. The fact they kept any furniture at all & moved it into a new place tells me their mold issues aren't over & if they sued this woman who took them into her life & home & raised them with love, imagine how easy it will be for them to sue their new landlord when the mold eventually takes over their new place. It's time to grow up and take responsibility for your own filth girls.

She and other judges always do this thing about family or close friends or whatever that you shouldn't sue but the fact is if they did you wrong and they were in the wrong then they are no different from any other normal person. I would sue my mom or my kid or my sister or my best friend if they did me dirty. What the horrible thing is is for those people to actually do you dirty in the first place. not saying the mom is entirely in the wrong in the situation although she did not take appropriate steps to remediate but I think the girls are at least partially responsible, but that's not the point. My point is more directed toward the judges attitude about suing family.
