Making Sense of Gundam's (IMPOSSIBLE) Canon | Gundam Canon Explained... sort of

MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM is a franchise that has been going on for more than 40 years with many series bearing its name. The main storyline's setting is called Universal Century and has been moving forward uninterrupted since 1979... sort of. In reality, Gundam's chronology and canonical stories are somewhat vague, at least to the eyes of the people of the west. So, what is the gundam canonical chronology?
My name is Absa, and in this video I'll try to explain where our obession for canon came from and how, if viewed as comic book writer Grant Morrison says, everything is cannon to a certain extent.

This channel is criminally underrated. I consider myself pretty versed in almost everything Gundam, but I always get something new from these videos. Try putting something sexy in the thumbnails and I’ll bet that brings in views. 😅

For me Gundam canon is the same as most western media. I have been on a forum called Mahq for years. I have read and discussed the topic of canon or “official works”. Bandai like you mentioned in your video. Views anything animated as official and; video games, novels, and manga as “black label”. They are weird with choosing what’s part of the official timeline in any give universe like U.C. , F.C. , A.C. , C.E. , A.D. and so on. The other universe don’t fit well together because, of the different technologies. So for me, Turn A Gundam being the end point of every universe, just doesn’t sit well with contradictions of each ending of the separate timelines. Well to me at least. The Universal Century, for me has a different interpretation than for others. I choose the first Gundam series over the movies. I choose Zeta and Double Zeta as continuations. I choose Char’s Counterattack as the end of Amuro and Char’s rivalry; As well as the Federation and Zeon’s final major conflict. I choose Gundam Unicorn as a self contained love letter to the Universal Century. I choose Gundam F91 as a new beginning for the next generation. I choose Victory Gundam as a sorrowful and hopefully end for the tragic Universal Century. I also like War in the Pocket, 08th MS team, Stardust Memory. I also like Gundam NT and Gundam Hathaway. I choose what fits to my view and liking of the Universal Century. I like most of series, OVAs, and Movies set in the Universal Century. I like to choose what fits where for myself that does not mean. That what others like, I will say “you are wrong with how the timeline works”. Choose what you like. I will choose what I like and, somewhere in the middle. We all will find something to enjoy together. P.S I just hope Bandai adapts Mobile Suit Gundam Crossbone.

You have a very interesting posture towards UC Canon. I very much agree with your thoughts... except Crossbone hahaha. While it was a very entertaining manga, I found the mecha design to be super weird... and I'm a fan of weird designs like the Xi.

As a fan of Tokusatsu like Kamen Rider & Super Sentai your comparison to it is 100% spot on.

Putting together the timeline of each kamen rider stories is, frankly, almost impossible, especially with how some of them ended up altering universe/timeline (Den-O, Decade, Build, Zi-O to name a few). With time/universe altered, comes the question whether the event of the previous series still stay true or not. Even without the alteration stuff, many events that happened before the story proper most of the times don't line up well with the events in the previous entry. For example, a huge meteor filled with Worms landed in Japan when Kuuga was around, if the events in Kabuto is to be considered as canon; Humagear already existed back in Ryuki/Faiz era, according to Zero-One timeline; Smartbrain never made any upgrade to Delta (or a stronger belt), despite how many years has passed between Faiz and Zero-One; human technology somehow made a jump from G3 to Faiz and Blade within a span of just a few years; and many more.

@@spearsage Or how the world basically got reset in Build, it'd be a really big stretch to try and put together all of the Rider shows. or even Sentai. The most clear one is Ultraman's, where despite all these events happening and Ultraman appearing in different places they should be, they have lots of things to explain them. Tiga appearing in the Trigger series? That's not quite the Tiga everyone knows, he's an accumulation of the light of hope in Shizuma. Or Dyna appearing in Ultra Galaxy legends? He's the same one you know, but when he was sucked into a black hole at the end of his series, he survived and now travels through the multiverse to help people. There's less to no explanation in Rider, they just kinda show up sometimes. It makes it unclear how they got there, but it's all in good fun.

Thank you very much. I was hesitant to bring up the timelines of Tokusatsu series since I know very little of their stories but it just felt right to include that type of chronologies and canon.

To me, Gundam is all in one timeline, with Turn A Gundam resetting civilization as an attempt to force humanity to do it all over again. The various versions of events in the animes are like different perspectives being told by different people, and we take that multitude of perspectives and try to find the truth of what happened. It's like a historiography.

So basically Gundam Canon is like 40K Canon, Almost Anything is Canon unless said other wise and any and all discrepancies can be chalked up to In Universe Propaganda, Confused Folk memory or Inaccurate reporting.

@@comradefreedom8275 as an example in 40K, the Legion of te Damned (a Group of Supernatural Superhuman Space Marines) and Alpharius (a Leader Called a Primarch) have conflicting supposed Origins that are all considred canon but weather they are true to the setting or not is never explained. I guess Gundam is that too especially UC Gundam, Thunderbolts and Origin don't neatly line up with Later parts of Canon in the UC Timeline, and its up to the Audience to figure out why that is as it doesn't relate to the stories the authors wanted to talk about, perhaps Parts of it are accurate, perhaps much of it is an outside interperation, perhaps only a fraction of it was true to begin with who knows. P.S the only difference is that Sunrise didn't explain their stance on it as apparently Fluid Timeline is common in Japan

Saying Tomino's novelization and anime is different is kinda weird since he wrote the novelization DURING the Gundam production and killed Amuro at the end cause he wasn't sure if the anime was going to continue or not, and has said he probably wouldn't have done it if he knew.

I don't consider Turn A Gundam canon, as the end all of the Gundam Universe. I feel like the Gundam time line is ever expanding and its true ending is the one Full Frontal mentioned, basically the end of time. Nor do I consider Victory Gundam or Reco G to be a true connection to the Amuro and Char timeline. Those are loosely connected in the same way, when one super sentai show ends, they show the main hero pass the baton to the next hero. Yes, sometimes a series will reference past sentai shows, but there is no influence or direct impact on the currently airing show. It's basically boils down to this, there is the Amuro and Char main saga then there is everything else. Part of the Amuro and Char saga is events they have influenced in the UC timeline (Zeta, Thunderbolt, Unicorn, etc). Anything else shoehorned (Video games, OVAs, collabs) into the main saga is canon as long as it doesn't change the true history of the timeline.
@absa
@absa Жыл бұрын
I also believe that the main (and best if I'm being biased) saga of the UC is the Amuro/Char conflict and I'm very curious as to how will the Hathaway Flash trilogy (with Hathaway being a somewhat direct succesor to both of them) include and/or aknowledge the Unicorn Saga.

I find this kinda ironic because Sherlock Holmes was the beginning of secular canon, and Sherlock Holmes is pretty popular in Japan as far as imports go.

Consider after war gundam x after turn a, always found the 2 to be kinda companion pieces. Turn a trying to end franchise wise and x trying to end the UC timeline. I'm in the minority in this but I think x accomplished it better than turn a

So..., no real look at the actual timeline. Very disappointed. That is why I click on the link. Though I did find what was being talked about interesting, I thought you were going to talk about the actual timeline after that "beginning talk" as it were. Again, disappointed. Will still give it a thumbs up, but please make sure you use better wording for your title next time.
