You know a great way to get the dragonscale pattern with a bit less work, would be to use an "English point" strap punch. It's got a rounded 'v' shaped head, as long as you don't punch all the way through, it let's you get a great scale pattern. It's what I used for the bracers I made. Also, a stitching pony would really help with some of the leather sewing, and I've found it also helps when stitching the signatures together in book binding. Your book making videos got me into book binding which also led into leather working, so thank you very much. I'd love to see more of both the bookbinding, and leatherwork videos.

So, i finally gave in & watched one of your videos. After noticing a thumbnail a while back i've been avoiding the ones that keep getting recommended. I haven't done much crafting for a long time & presently am financially unable to do much of anything. So i knew i'd be super envious watching you make what i was seeing. Well, i was right. Sadly, i can only wish to be doing something like this, but that's OK. Your creation is stupendous. The addition of the black really did the trick, it's gorgeous. I think i'm going to be suffering future craft studio envy since i'll be checking out more of your projects. I'm sure it will be well worth it.

Tips for an even dye on leather. 1. Make sure the leather is fully dry. 2 use a wood block (sanding block can be used) and wrap it with a paper towel. Apply the dye to the paper towel when on the block. Then use that to apply the dye to the leather. Don't spray or use a paintbrush or it won't come out even. On something that is supposed to look organic, I would use all three methods. Start with the block, then spray on where you want slightly darker, while the dye is still wet used a brush to feather out the edges around the sprayed areas. This can give a more organic look to the dye wothout having areas that are too dark. Hope this helps for future projects.

How do you think a foam craft roller would do? Or even a (new) kitchen sponge? Dyeing isn't something I've had a lot of experience with, as I usually just oil the piece and that's it. What do you reckon?
@seangere9698
@seangere9698 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheMurlocKeeper the problem with sponges is they absorb a lot of dye, so you would end up with way more dye in the sponge then needed to dye your leather and end up wasting it as you wouldn't want to ring it out and put it back in with your clean dye. I'm not sure about the craft roller as I haven't used them before. You could run into the same problem as the sponge but as I said I haven't used them before so I don't know what they are made out of. The one thing that I found that works great is using a rubber sanding block and folding a paper towel a couple times and placing the ends into the groves on the block. This holds the towel in place and gives you plenty of room so you have less chance to get the dye on your hands, also I recommend using rubber gloves whenever you use dye or you will have coloured hands for days. Hope this helps.

To get in the grooves, one thing leather people use is called antique. It gets in the grooves and dents to give the piece more dimension. However, antique doesn't stain but does color the overall piece as well so be careful when using it with certain colors.

this looks quite amazing. The choice of adding the black to the silver was worth it.

This looks amazing! I could watch the finished product footage for hours! I wish I could make this, but I have no clue how to sew or find leather. So I'll just glue some old fake leather handbags together😂

There's a lot of tutorials on how to sew leather, I'm not going to mention channel names on here, but you can do some searching. Also depending on your country, finding leather suppliers isn't massively difficult.

@@luminariel3765 - so...like 2-3 days? lol! Because that's generally how long it takes to make anything like this....and that's if you really push it. (because you can't speed up drying times) Usually though, while having a life in between, it takes much longer, like maybe a week..if you're keen. :P As a maker of things myself over the years, I know how long it can take to make the simplest of things. Even sewing up a pillowcase takes a crazy amount of time. People have no idea! Hardcore leatherworking of this magnitude? This'd personally take me a full month...on and off.

I absolutely love this! If I might make a suggestion, you should use some sort of protective finish to protect the dye job on your leather if you're going to use that everyday, Keep up the great work!

It looks amazing and really professional! I wonder, for leather pouches like the ones on the front, can you mix up the type of leather and use a soft leather for the sides of the ‘box’ to make the space soft and foldable? The outside panel could still be hard for a armory/metal look. Then they would have that pocket look? Idk anything about leather working to be honest. Just thinking about the aesthetics.
@TheMurlocKeeper
@TheMurlocKeeper 4 жыл бұрын
Technically, yes, you can mix up different leather types. There's no hard and fast rule here, lol! The "soft" leather you refer to is called chrome leather, because of the way it is tanned. It makes for a very soft, supple leather. However, it usually comes pre-coloured, and cannot be shaped or stamped in any way like what was shown in this vid. (unless it is done in the factory first, then it can have other fancy textures and colours applied to it) That stuff is made from something called veg-tanned leather. It comes quite stiff, but as you can see, it can be wet moulded, and will readily take a dye well, as it hasn't really been finished with anything, so it's very porous. Does this info help? I'm such a crafting nerd sometimes...sorry. :P

Hey Martina, Hansi, I have 2 questions and 2 suggestions. Questions: 1) Can I base 2 OCs (Original Characters) off of the 2 of you? 2) If so what do you want them to be? I was thinking you, Martina be a elf, witch hybrid or something like that. Hansi could be a human with clear sight that let's him see the supernatural clearly. Suggestions: I noticed you don't upload as often anymore. I'm not sure why but I thought it might be having no ideas. So here's my 1st suggestion: Look back at your past projects. You've made multiple designs for each project. Yet you only make 1 of them and never revisit the project to make another. So you could go back and make another design. You could make new designs too. You've learned a lot since most of your projects. So maybe go back and do another with the new skills you've learned. Your magic wand and magic staff for example. Here's my 2nd suggestion: Mix the things you've done. I've never seen you make a figure for your Dioramas. You've printed or bought them. I understand they're small so many make their tools or something. Like a magic staff or large shield from resin or something. Or maybe make a magical Diorama that has a figure trapped or sealed in a resin crystal. Or make a set. A Diorama, a painting, and maybe tools. Tools: Weapons, armor, jewelry, clothes, and a book. Life sized armor for a male, a female, and maybe a pet. Same with weapons, jewelry, and clothes. An the book could have info about creatures or something. An I don't mean just make the book. I mean draw and write the information. Make a world of your own.
