This video shows how I made wooden wall panels for my DIY Sprinter camper van. Walls will be covered in tweed fabric in a later video series.

People who do good, or average work, use the measure twice cut once method. A perfectionist will measure and cut as many times as it takes to get the job absolutely perfect.

It's usually far easier to take more off than it is to make up for mis-cuts, either in waste or the fit and finish due to compromise measures.

Love the videos. They are helping me immensely as I embark on my own DIY sprinter conversion. Really looking forward to seeing your process for upholstery and also curious to see more about glueing the fabric on the metal framing around the sliding and rear doors. This looks super clean and professional. I would love to recreate that clean of a look in my van. Thanks for taking time to make videos and share with the community.

Great stuff... I’ve just finished my 80/20 overhead cabinets, and they turned out awesome! I think I watched your video 20 times because no matter how many times I read something on sprinter source, seeing a video makes it click for me. I am so thankful that you are doing this series! You were a major reason for me choosing to go the 80/20 route and I’m so glad I did, because that stuff is bombproof! I wish I could take you out for a beer and show you them! If you ever find yourself in BC let me know.

For the areas you cut short on your template you can mark with a "scribe", this will make your final panel fit perfect.

Very good work and video as usual. Curious as to why you didn't just cut the factory panel and then cover it with foam and vinyl/upholstery?

In some peoples opinion the upholstery looks like a professional RV finish and not the inside of a tiny log cabin. It also sounds way better and has a warmer feel.

Save time and apply a thin bead of grease or Vaseline along the perimeter of where you want to panel. Place and press cardboard sheet or construction paper against area and voila, instant accurate template.

You're videos have been immensely helpful as I build out my van. Not to mention your attention to detail is spot on. I don't think you covered this: how did you attach the trim rings to the van body?
@ourkaravan
@ourkaravan 5 жыл бұрын
@Suzanne Garcia - Thank you Suzanne, much appreciated! The trim rings are screwed to the wall panel itself. Most builders would wrap the trim ring in upholstery first, then upholster the wall, then screw the trim ring to the wooden wall panel. Problem is you end up with exposed screws. I wanted to avoid exposed screws so you'll see in the upholstery video an alternate way that I did it to avoid visible screws. Either way works though!

@@ourkaravan Can I follow up with a question as I am working on my Sprinter 144 panels now: Are you saying that the trim rings "float" or are they fitted so tightly around the metal window frame itself that they stay in place? In other words, how do you ensure that the frame doesn't pull away from the window - is it attached somehow? glued? or does your panel just hold it into place? With the bowing of the wall panels due to the curvature of the van wall near the window, I am finding this difficult to imagine. Thanks for your super helpful videos! -Russ

It depends highly on your van’s layout. For example, if you have cabinetry or bed rails pushing the wall panels in, that’s all you need. I have cabinetry on the driver side that keeps mine contoured to the wall perfectly. I don’t have that on the passenger side and that side could use some way to keep it better conformed to the curved wall. A curved brace glued to the inside could do it.

Hi, exactly what you said plus three sheet metal screws-one centered right behind the sliding door and two more vertically near the back of the wall panel at the D pillar.

Thank you for the kind words! I used a polyurethane caulk. Be sure not to use anything silicone based as the acids intended to prevent bathroom mold can etch paint and cause rust down the road.

So do you only use one sheet and trim/ adjust or cut another until you get it right? If the latter that is expensive. End result looks great. Well done so much more satisfying when you do it yourself to a high standard.

I get it close with cardboard then make the final adjustments on the wood panels. You can always plane a little off but you sure can't add it back on later!

Awesome video great ideas for my panels. Was wondering if instead of cardboard could you use newspapers instead to some OnThe budgets?
@ourkaravan
@ourkaravan 2 жыл бұрын
Anything is possible but I think you'd want the rigidity of the cardboard to more accurately represent the dimensions. The cardboard will bend to conform to the wall in a similar fashion as the wood wall panel.

Do you recall roughly what the depth your bunk window trim ring was? Also does it seat over the window or just rent on the window?

Not sure but I bought it from rbcomponents.com, they may have dimensions on their website. It does not attach to the van.

On both the driver and passenger sides the upper portions of the wall panel are held in place by the factory headliner. On the driver's side the wall panel is pushed into place by the cabinetry and on the passenger side it is resting in the flange of the L-track at the bottom. Both the driver and passenger side wall panels use two sheetmetal screws placed vertically along the rear D-pillar to help the wall panel conform to the curve of the wall. The passenger side has one additional sheetmetal screw right behind the sliding door. So five screws total, that's it!
