Making your own jewellery making tools is always fun. It also is a lot cheaper plus sometimes there is nothing out there that will do the job as good as a tool you make yourself.
In this film Andrew shows you just how quick and cheap you can make your own mini burnishers, ideal for setting your gemstones when you flush set.

love your videos and I find them so useful. I would like to see how jewellers make their own nice customised tools out of metal rod or old tools such as different shape of burnishers to going into awkward tiny places to set stones or burnish bezel etc. or not only burnishers but useful and customised own tools would be great. I guess you don't really want to reveal all your trade secret but would be brilliant if you could share homemade tools to make your life easier. Thank you for sharing your knowledge through videos!

Having learnt so much on the first watch through of your films, It now feels like the bench is coming together slowly here, so I am re watching pertinent films with a little understanding from the first watch, if that makes sense. Anyhow, cheers Andrew, catch you soon on a Q&A.

Glad you posted this Andrew, I have also seen the conversations (and taken part) and was surprised that fellow metalsmiths were not realising that these are easy to make. I have used beading tools for mine though - as I didn't have any old burrs to hand but was putting in an order to the supplier an extra quid for a beading tool was an easy way to get the steel.

I enjoy listening to you carry on, it's always helpful information, then laugh when you try to cut yourself off & make yourself stop talking! You are entertaining & informative, so thank you! Along with Gabby in the comments, I would also like to see these tiny burnishers in use. Any plan for a video on that in the near future? Thank you much Sir!

Why do some people say to heat first before reshaping? And some say doesn't matter. When does it matter??

For setting 2.5mm round stones, how large should the tip of the burnisher be? I have an old scratch awl that has a 1mm tip that I was thinking about using, because it already has a handle and is a good length. Also, does the material of the burnisher matter? I will be setting cubic zirconia, moissanite, and diamond. I'm mostly concerned about damaging the CZ.
@Atthebench
@Atthebench 3 жыл бұрын
It has to fine tipped. Not sharp. Gently rounded at the top. Steel best. Polished. The tip ideally should not touch the stone

Gabby, I just watched some videos of other jewelry makers using these tiny burnishers. Look for videos on flush mounting stones. Apparently they're used to press around the tiny stones used in flush mounting. Hope that helps!

Good evening. I had ment to inform you last week but you were challenged by Rio Grand on your video DOING Rings All Wrong. The fellow that did the video conceded that you were correct of all points mentioned. It is on Rio Grande's site and not very old. Should be easy to find. Thank you for all your hard work in posting these great videos.

I cannot find anything to drill a hole in my stones for the dremel or flex shaft. I can’t find any tutorial to help me. And what’s a burr’s?
@jeanined9060
@jeanined9060 6 жыл бұрын
Hi A Shand! ( Andrew, hope you don't mind me answering this first!) A Shand, you need a diamond coated drill bit to drill holes in stone. I'm assuming you mean stones like agates, jasper, other semi-precious stones. That technique falls more into the lapidary category & there are several stone/lapidary workers you can find on KZfaq. I'll tell you what I know for now. I've cut holes in stone & glass by using diamond coated drill bits (they come in all different sizes, from tiny to pretty large. I've purchased them for my Dremel tools from Ace Hardware, Home depot, Amazon, Rio Grande, etc. They're easy to find). Cutting stone or glass must be done under water though, because of all the heat built up while cutting. Your stone will crack if not kept cool. I place the stone in a shallow dish of water so just the tip of the drill is submerged (can't submerge the actual drill because you'll ruin it &/or get electrocuted!). There's quite a few steps to get started, such as having a way to keep your stone stabilized if it's too small to hold with your fingers, starting the hole with a tiny pilot ding, moving your drill up & down while drilling so particulate matter can be released into the water while you're drilling through the stone, etc. Really, find a lapidarist on here to see full instructions on that. If you really can't find one, try glass working sites. I've put 4mm holes in fused glass pieces using a table grinder made for stained glass work. Always using diamond coated grinding heads. They're crucial. Burrs are drill bits that have heads of different shapes & sizes & are made specifically for different tasks. Andrew can answer this question better than I! Hope this helps!

Andrew, what happened to the mini burnishers you used to stock in your shop for £4.50? I don't have any spent burrs or drills that I can repurpose and wanted to buy one so I went to your shop, found exactly what I was looking for but it's out of stock . . . aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarggghhhhhhhhhhh!
