If you’ve been a carpenter for at least 20 years you know that MAKITA’s lineage is with the carpenter and woodworker. To prove this just think back to your first miter saw, table saw or slide pack drill and I’d bet it was a MAKITA for most of you.
Who would’ve guessed, back then, that cordless tools would be as powerful as their corded brethren. Lately, MAKITA’s goal is to only launch new, cordless tools of they were equal to or better than their corded version.
Makita Compact Router XTR01Z
We recently took the MAKITA 18V LXT brushless cordless compact router XTR01Z to the jobsite and for some testing in our shop. This router is geared toward the Pro contractor. These days, so many people are using compact routers do the lion share of their routing applications.

Dang, that is a huge benefit to fix the same accessories as their existing corded version. Kudos to Makita for that!

I added this router to my Makita line, I've only used it for hinge mortising so far, but I've already added multiple projects to the list just because of this tool. It is perfect for hanging doors, so I can't wait to trim a full house. Thanks for another outstanding review!

The compatibility of the accessories is a really refreshing approach. Who isn’t sick of having to dump perfectly good stuff just because of compatibility issues? Well done Makita. I’m buying one for sure and use the corded one in a router table.

I saw this router on-line and instantly became interested but I like to be able to get my hands on a tool before I buy it whenever possible. Finally saw one in Home Depot and knew right away that this thing was going to be so much nicer to use than the Bosch Colt I've had for years. I was so impressed with it that I've decided to switch my cordless platform from the M18, which I was pretty well invested in for work, to the Makita for woodworking.

Great review and video as usual Rob. I have a lot of Makita cordless tools, in fact we're trying to go completely cordless, so this was a welcome addition. what a great little router this is. I just hope Makita release a Rip/Tables saw very soon, as it's one of the last corded tools I still use. Anyway the router is as good as you say. Many thanks

The fact that this is just cordless Makita RT0700 sold me from day one. I'm just waiting for it to hit the market in a month or two. Another tool is the XPS01 which is the cordless version of the SP6000. Makita did very well on these corded tools that getting a cordless ones are no brainer for any one with a set of two LXT batteries and a charger. Thanks for confirming that Rob. Your opinion matters.

💥👊🏼 As always a really great review. 5:33 in my 30 plus years as a finish carpenter I’ve never once went backwards with a router, only forward. You’re a braver man than me. 🤟🏼 So great to cut free of a cord pulling at you but that big vacuum hose instead...??
@Jerryonemillion
@Jerryonemillion Жыл бұрын
? Was a journeymen way back in the day...'Back cutting' was pretty popular technique for getting cleaner results in tough materials. The thinking was that the bit pushes away from the work when you back cut and will always leave a bit to be cut off when you come back at it the right way 'round. Obviously you need to maintain control of the tool, which will try to 'run' away which is not a big deal, you want the router to go quite quickly as you're just removing waste, not making a finished cut. Did you let the router tip back and forth when you made a pass with a router?
@Jimmy_Cavallo
@Jimmy_Cavallo Жыл бұрын
@@Jerryonemillion I have always been able to hold it nice and flat regardless of what direction I go in but I recall going backwards a couple of times and as you said the bit really wanted to run away and pull from the work.

This is a really great router. I'm seeing increased productivity and time saved with "cordless" on a router. It's perfectly balanced, has good power and I get good run time out of it. I'm looking to replace my 15 yr old LS1013, too bad they really dropped the ball with their LS1019 and miter saws in general...yeah yeah the XSL06 may have fixed the dishing problem...but why do I need cordless in a miter saw ??? Anyway, this is an awesome little router, worth every penny in saved time and increased accuracy from not dragging a cord behind you. Only con, and it's not really even a con is that it's 1/4" only so all my 1/2" bits dont work ...but hey, it's a compact so no fault there.

After watching this review all my doubt about going cordless with my router was removed. I'm already on the Makita 18v battery line so this was very inexpensive for me. Buying the tool only was very affordable. I have the same corded Makita tools I've owned for 20 plus years, so I know they are well made. I was just waiting for battery technology to get up to speed. I have officially cut the cord on most of my tools (circular saw, reciprocating saw, impact driver, hammer drill, and now router ) all Makita. Next step is going to be the 36v compound miter saw! Great review... cheers!

The funny thing to me, is when you add the vacuum hose, it may as well be corded, defeating the cordless feature when having a vacuum hose connected to it. Yeah, funny. The quality is nice as I saw this at home depot today.

I thought this as well, however, I reflected that if the cordless router is at least as effective as the corded router it twins, it would still be preferable to have only one 'tether' (dust collection hose) to manage. And a trim router might often be used without dust collection, no?

A Concord Carpenter / ToolBoxBuzz I like your unbiased approach to most reviews, but when you take the position that "everyone's a winner" it becomes really annoying. Saw this review the other day, which was very useful. I confess - I'm a cordless makita guy. Still though, after JUST watching the review on the older review of the rigid router, it looked as if you were try to find reasons to praise it and be excited. You've done "best in class" & "head to heads" before and there were products that came out on top. Back to my previous point. If you say everyone wins, then nobody does. To take an unbiased approach on something means your have a responsibility to have a final opinion on something. If that pull-out switch on the rigid was made of cheese would you have really told the guy, "what work best for you works best"? IMHO

Tim - that's great feedback. This was not a tool comparison, just a tool review, and runtime test. Doing a head to head on the two cordless routers would look, sound and be a different animal.... and actually fun to do. Great idea! I love tools and report on them, offering constructive feedback when I feel necessary. If the Ridgid sucked I would have either told you folks, or chosen NOT to review it and waste your time. Additionally many of these tool companies are competing for 2%, meaning that they are ALL great tools and they're looking to eak past the rest by a small percentage. At the end of the day I'm speaking to Pros who need to know will this tool do the work , be efficient and make them money.

Tightening the collet nut is a bit of a PITA with the wrenches in the box. Had to use something a bit more conventional out of the tool box. Other than that great tool and great review.

A Concord Carpenter / ToolBoxBuzz thanks for the reply, disappointed but maybe I’ll pick it up for the finish work I do, do you know of a cordless router that would be able to cut out the plywood?

A Concord Carpenter / ToolBoxBuzz would you be able to test it and post your results? I love your channel and all the reviews you do. I’m a makita guy and I just picked up the cordless 10 inch miter saw . I love it so far, can’t wait to push its limits and see what it really has
