This summer I met with MLB Players Kevin Pillar (CF, Red Sox), Kevin Palwecki (C, Red Sox) and Ryon Healy (3B, Brewers) at Superstition Mountain for a Player Lesson series with Rapsodo Golf. It's amazing to watch what these athletes can do when they're given the right task.
One of the first questions that came up was about setting your body up and finding the correct target line. If you get your eyes, your shoulders and your hips lined up correctly, you can let your athleticism take over.
Train your eyes. The start line is visually deceiving.
Don't just play golf. Understand it.

After my round yesterday, after 5 years of watching his videos, after trying so hard to do what this man has been saying, it all finally clicked for me. I was blown away by how everything Mike has said came true. EVERY SINGLE THING. Although Mike has tons of videos, I decided to truly focus on just a few things, 1) really working on pivoting the club in the downswing. This is hard to learn after years of pulling but once you get it, it makes complete sense, 2) directing and redirecting momentum. Once you understand how this works, you suddenly realize how distance is created effortlessly, and 3) don’t worry about your body. Before yesterday’s round, I was playing terribly. Yesterday, it was like a miracle. I felt confident on every shot. I was launching great drives and fairway woods. My iron play, which usually is poor, was getting more solid as the round progressed. I finished with 7 pars and 2 birdies (which is phenomenal for me... and yes, I had a few double bogies but that was because there were holes where I didn’t trust what I was doing and reverted to pulling). If you can understand what is meant by tipping the club out (and it is a very subtle move), and directing momentum, I am confident that you can utterly change your swing. Mike, Thank you.

Mike IS AWESOME. I also think the "D" Plane has a lot to do with where the ball starts out. The face of the club is moving on an arc relative to the target line. The bottom of the swing normally occurs opposite the sternum but with a driver, the face doesn't contact the ball until it's past the bottom and moving back to the inside somewhat. So, essentially the face will be pointing to the left of the target line by the time it reaches the ball. Without getting too technical, once you understand the face rotation vs. the path, you can then start to dial in your direction. Of course, grip, setup, stance, ball position and your particular swing has a lot to do with it also. Understand "D" Plane and keep watch Malaska videos and you will get a whole lot better.

Thanks again Mike! Discovered my eye line was to the right and couldn't get consistent contact. Got my eyes back parallel to target line and now every shot solid and feels like my natural swing.

The single best, without a doubt, instructional lesson Malaska has ever given is this explanation of why and how he sets up the target lines. At address the eyes are so far inside the target line, to make a correlation between vision at setup vs how they relate to the target is so misleading, it can only result in an intuitive and improper swing path that will lead players to instinctively make incorrect movements the body and mind will never correlate into making proper movements to send the ball consistently down the target line, which leads to GIGO. Our brains instinctively look and react to a perceived target only as well as our mind perceives it. A true target line vs. the linear eye position to the target seems impossible to correlate. Stick a vertical alignment stick 5-10 yds down the ball- target line, it’ll look 20-30 yards right. Imagine the breakdown of the correct body rotation and path with that deviation and then ask how a ball could ever be hit on line consistently. This may be Mike’s greatest lesson and contribution to golf. I only hope to see more clarification. If you can train the eyes for putting to consistently see a hole-width path to my target spot, I’ll give you a percentage of my winnings. Those rare occasions I see it, I’m literally putting out of my mind.

Malaska's teachings haven't been the most applicable to what my issues are, but I have to say that this is one of the most impressive lessons I've seen. He is able to actually COMMUNICATE the adjustments in the precise way that lands home.

That old Jack Nicklaus feel of keeping his shoulders turned at the top for as long is he could and having his shirt buttons facing the ball or even behind it at impact would definitely help this guy not be so late/stuck. Personally I love that feel.

Thanks Mike. So when you're lined up "square" to the target line, HOW, do you hit it right of the start line stick? Do you come more from the inside? Do you chase the arms "out to first base"? can you comment on some ways to feel this? It stunning how much each player thought the flag was to the left of the actual target line!!!

Hey Kevin ... after many years of watching you I've always thought that if you applied "less is more" to your baseball swing you had a better chance of replicating your 58(?) game streak than the approach you had in TO... a little more Ichiro and Wee Willie (" hit'em where they ain't" ) Keeler less Jose/Edwin ... HR's may win $$$, OB% wins games ... also, you should have at least 3 Gold Gloves on your shelf ... thanks for your hustle and heart in Toronto

I could visualize what you were teaching. I can diagram this from the top view, like from a drone. Hitting the ball left of center makes counter clockwise spin, thus fade or straight - not slice. Also when ball hits the ground it will roll straight or spin to left. Left foot may need to be back to make swing path correct for this to happen. Still have to hit the ball at near center of club face. I will still slice if I hit the ball from the toe.

Love your insight on the golf swing. Great information on something that I had no clue about. I’m not sure I understand why one person will perceive the target line left of the correct line and another will perceive it right of. Also, if I were to determine that my perceived target line is say left of the actual target line, how do I carry that on to the course when I have no props?

Great teaching videos. Thank you so much. Dropped about 10 strokes off my score. Question... can you address the concept of hitting the inside of the golf ball? Is it a mind set or a mechanical adjustment? Thanks again.

Like you pointed out on the putting green Mike (thank you very much), our eyes don't necessarily agree with the path while we're standing over the ball, and on the green you suggested we stand over the ball till it agrees. Is that what you're suggesting here? I heard, "turn more or take a full swing." Using the putting example, it was stated our subconscious would compensate -- wouldn't are swing compensate in this case too and cause them/us to hit the ball to the left. How do we train our eyes in the fairway? Thanks!

Great vid with the boys. I have a question you see the pros taking divots often pretty meaty ones including with fairway metals is that due to the surfaces they hit off, so if they were to play off hard fairways would they change their swings in anyway, most fairways I play off are relatively hard with tight lies. Many thanks
@Spaxcore
@Spaxcore 3 жыл бұрын
I think that with their club head speed and how thin their irons are they'd hit divots in anything. I've seen some tournaments where the ground is pretty hard and they're still taking chunks. But ultimately, do what works for you. You're not a PGA pro. Even if something was going to hurt them in the long run they'd do it to win because millions of dollars are on the line, often decided by one or two shots. If you're just trying to get a decent handicap then find your own path there.

Hello Mike. A question for you about a comment from this video. I found a couple of the essential elements from your swing ideas myself a few years back. And when I played a lot my chipping was the best ever. I go up and down 90%. But I felt that I was trapping the ball in my wedge and felt I was hitting it either directly behind or slightly outside. With your idea of dropping or tipping the club out I also feel my best contact feels as though I’m hitting center or out to in with a closed club face. But, in this video you said you should feel like you’re hitting the inside of the ball. I’d love to hear your thoughts?

most pros are not hitting the ball straight ... they work the ball typically on a path they naturally can reproduce under pressure not saying they cant move the ball both ways ... also it depends on the distance you are hitting the ball also

This is the monkey wrench of Golf! Without knowing this concept, yes you are screwed! it’s an easy fix too. I usually don’t even look at my final target. I only look at my intermediate targets when I set up and shoot I look at my final target maybe once.
