I think something important to mention is the massive change in tone by the end. At the start of the movie everything is incredibly serious and dark with spousal abuse and brutal references to miscarriages. There is no humour in the first half of the movie. But after the twist at the end, the movie completely becomes self aware, in addition to the ridiculous fight scenes there are some genuinely good jokes made "Wait, why am I calling the police?". By the end scene even the acting and dialogue feels kinda off, Madison's line about being able to move the bed sounds like it came straight out of a 80s B movie. I think that maybe this is James Wan's middle finger to the people that have demanded that he return to horror for the past few years. Basically what 'Misery' was for Stephen King. Tbh I think this is better than Insidious and the Conjuring. Horror movies have basically become creative jump scare compilations in the past decade and I think this movie makes the perfect circuit breaker.

There was comedy sprinkled in thoughtout the whole thing though, the woman detective joked about the killer looking like sloth, and the line where she mocked the idea that the killer is here imaginary friend. The people that talk smack about this movie are the same ones that think Twilight deserves an oscar. This was something different and cinematically there isn't a film that comes to mind that took me for quite the ride. I mean the overshot scene in the house, the transitional environment, and the police dept. scene where the body contorts yet the camera follows those same contortions as we progress through the film. That was a hell of a ride. It's a fucking slasher movie. Don't think too hard about it. Be thankful someone did something unique in the film industry instead of rehashing what we expect. This was a good movie. If you have any problem with any of it, well then, 9:23 .

The way this is told throughout the movie without us actually knowing what is going on is fantastic. I and I'm sure many others at the start assumed this was one of those cliches where the main character is the one actually responsible for the shit, and in a way that's kinda true, but this movie took super natural movie cliches and gave them more of a "logical" explanation (I know a parasitic twin isn't actually a thing obviously) but in the movie it is an actual disease, so technically speaking it's not supernatural. Another example of that is at the beginning where her boyfriend died, it was one of those cliches where something happened in a dream but it actually did happen, the difference is with this movie is she really was never dreaming in the first place, it was just Gabriel doing his thing. So my point is, this movie was hella unique in a way, and the twists were actually good, genuinely a really good movie.

The movie was pretty good. However filmmakers should learn if they want to make an ending where the Mc is also the villain with an alternate personality, or parasite, than don't use the song Where Is My Mind or in the case of this movie the first few tones. Everyone who saw a certain movie with Brad Pitt will know what the ending will be.

I really enjoyed it. I thought I had the twist figured out early on but the chase scene with Shaw poked a big hole in it. I always thought it was Madison committing the murders and that she had some kind of malignant brain tumor that created a split personality but the Madison part of her was still conscious enough to witness the murders. The parasitic twin element threw me for a loop but I loved it. On a second viewing, I'm skeptical about whether the ending is what it appears, though. It all seems a bit too tidy? Madison literally had a hole in her but she seemed fine. The ward imploded and a police detective attacked but no one comes to investigate? Also how in the hell are they going to let Madison get away with an actual massacre? I'm not 100% convinced Maddie won. But I would also accept the suspension of belief.

This film done something so clever and it went over peoples heads . Malignant has a blend of 3 horror Genres paranormal , Pyschological , Survival /Slasher , I truly love how absurb the film was , I urge people to not take the camp moments for face Value , don't let your mind fall asleep at the wheel , when it comes to art their are no coincidences , Madison & Gabriel share the same mind and when Gabriel was mutilated and tortured by the doctors he was 9 years old , those " Camp " intense close ups were used when people were realising who Gabriel was this is not Madison this is the perspective of Gabriel Realising " Oh shit they are on to me " that's why those moments come across so childlike , obviously the more people that know Gabriel it apprehends him from completing his mission . It's funny to see this film hailed as chessy & camp when the style and themes have gone completely over peoples heads , that's what happens when you over indulge on big dumb blockbusters that have no thought behind them , I urge film fans to broaden their horizons and watch indie films & original concept films because their is so much that gets lost in translation amongst audiences , kudos to James wan , he created something so different from the rest of his filmography , It's a Really good film depending on how good your film IQ is .

It wasn’t that campy. It had its campy moments but it always goes back to Generic horror right after. I wish Wan went all out with it, at least in the last half of the movie it just goes full throttle campy. I enjoyed the crazy absurd moments, the movie needed more of that

The first part of this movie baffled me. But after realizing the whole context and theme that James Wan wants to tackle on this movie, I got fully on board. Pro tip is not to watch any trailers for this if you haven't seen it yet,. The marketing for this movie is so misleading that it may bring wrong expectations from viewers.

I love this movie... It was outside the box and not your regular zombies, mask killer, ghost, etc. It was explained that the reason he was able to control electricity because he was using 100% of his brain versus the normal 10% like they say humans only use. Not sure how true that is... but I'll take it especially since I seen the movies Lucy and Limitless before this movie came out. Anyway, they did a good job. Hope there will be a part 2.

It ('we only use 10%') isn't true, there is a certain level of synaptic activity, blood flow etc across your brain all the time. It just pops up as a trope, like in Lucy etc. If someone genuinely was only using 10% of your brain you'd be in a coma. 👍🏼

This was a great movie clearly inspired by the legend of Edward Mordrake. But! I do have one criticism. I figured the whole thing out as soon as Gabriel was shown in full view. It was the way he ran. It looked like someone walking backwards. I think that could've been handled a little better but that's just me. James wan is a goddamn genius and I do not question the King of Modern Horror very often. Love his movies. I just hate it when I figure things out too early in the movie. But the size of Gabriel when he was shown was a Holy Shit moment. And by better I think limiting the movement was an option. Pull the famous vanishing and reappearing act. Show Gabriel less. Also you gotta love the JoJo reference. There's a character in JoJo with a split personality and the two communicate via "telephones" But I do wonder how Gabriel suddenly manifested electrical powers.

Here's my batshi* take: I felt like it was a so very self-conscious meta, meta, meta…”the records room is in the basement! Of course!” If I had to make a list of all the films and genres this is playing with it would take me awhile. As for the soundtrack- 80’s giallo. I was really surprised when this became so self-conscious and fun, using diagetic and non-diagetic sound design, lighting, staging and turning it on its head. A Freudian analysis of this is sure to be - Mom is always “upstairs” in the attic (Psycho). And of course, adopted Mom is in a wheelchair (The Changeling too). The weapon is the scary phallic doctor's symbol which would make sense since none of their intervention has done anything but maim Madison. How bout the grindhouse exploitation prison scene? Another universe (Terminator too when Arnie takes out the police station). I think it's really funny and intentionally sexist (like so many indictments of films like Saw or giallo which were made by female French directors -- High Tension) it's only when Maddy consumes her masculine side she finds her strength. It's parody of his own work. The Cronenberg body horror stuff (and Basket Case), Nightmare on Elm Street, Tenebre, Suspiria (obviously), The Ring, The Tenant…don’t make me go on. Lol Yeah, I think Wan’s other films are crap (just my opinion) but this one really, really surprised me. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who wouldn’t get the joke. And OF COURSE Wan and everyone who made this knew what they were doing. I don’t think Hollywood would allow a solely psychotic subconscious to make a film with this kind of breaking-the-4th wall labyrinth plot. Lots of fun. Oh! And I forgot Dead Alive. When I was a kid it was so hard to get on VHS because it had an X rating. My God, one of the best gore-fest-comedies EVER made. Peter Jackson’s genius. Actually saw the house in NZ where a lot of it was shot. Obviously, Wan’s giving a little shout out to it too. 🤓 Does this mean I have to watch Saw? Shit. Oh! And thank YOU for coming to my TED Talk. You're a riot. Like AHS next week in Ptown. Thanks for your videos! I've been watching them for years and you only get more insightful and funny!

Although it wasn't scary, some of the fight scenes were awesome. The design of Gabrielle I liked, especially in the lab video. Did anybody else notice how Gabriel's voice was the same as Mary Shaw as James Wan's 2007 "Dead Silence"?? Also, the way the red light flashes from the red light flashing on the window on the apartment of the 2nd doctor Gabriel killed was also used to the same effect in Dead Silence when the main character Jamie was staying at that creepy hotel 🏨 & the dummy 🧒 was sitting by the 🪟?? Also, the loud blaring soundtrack music 🎶 that sounded like a creepy, death metal 🎸 🥁 music box lullaby throughout the movie is the same kind of music Wan also used in "Dead 😵 Silence🤫"??

All I can say, I enjoyed it.. it was refreshing; I like the approach he took with this- but, some of the execution just left me confused still. So the father is the devil, or a demon? I like how the ham fisted how Gabriel/Madison had super strength.. lol And, how the sister went to the ole psych ward or whatever by herself, and just popped back at the house with VHS tapes.. lol that was so jarring with the flow, and pace.. but, when Gabriel went full KickAss/Hit Girl? That was awesome.. I loved the body movement too.. crazy insane movie, but refreshing- like the movie Upgrade.
