Brilliant... This is exactly what I'm looking for. My elderly neighbour sadly died last week and his daughter asked me if I wanted this very engine. It's not been run for years, it was dirty and the piston was seized. It's all cleaned up and freed off now so I want to have it running, and this video has answered all my questions on how to do it. Great stuff.

I have this same engine and have a question please.... the funnel on mine when i look down into it has what appears to be a hole into the tank - although when I fire the engine up no steam omits from the hole, just lots of steam omits from the piston area - so I assume the hole is ceased up or something. I don't want to prod it with a tool in case I damage it but I've applied some penetrating spray into the funnel and left it for a couple of days to see if that helps but so far nothing has changed, Any suggestions would be appreciated. Should steam omit from the 'what appears to be a hole' ? Also, is it OK to use 3 in 1 oil or wd40 as a lubricant to the moving piston parts or should I buy special steam oil ? Thanks so much....

Only just found this comment, sorry. What you describe in the funnel is a self sealing rivet. It's just there to hold the chimney in place, and seal the noiler of course. If it leaks a new rivet is required with very careful drilling out of the original first. Re lub rication, 3 in 1 is not good enough as a lubricant in this application, and can turn to a sort of grinding paste when it gets mixed with water, steam and heat. WD40 is not a lubricant for anything. It's a penetrating fluid and water dispersal. If you can't get steam oil use bog standard 20/50 motor oil.

Hi thanks for the film, l have one of these,but it is an old one and does not have the overflow plug,any idea how old it could b?brought of ebay,and l ran it yesterday for the first time and not sure the burner is working ok,have you a film on how to sort out the meths burner's to strip em down and rebuild?,many thanks,Bob

Hello. Try Manor models for spares www.manormodels.co.uk/. Re the burner, no I haven't done a video on that. To be honest I've seen some rather grotty looking burners, but none that bad that they haven't been able to perfom well enough to do the job.

Nothing special, however, filling with water is awkward. Rest it on the end of the burner and fill boiler until water overflows from the safety valve hole. Replace safety valve. Oil, light meth's, and when ready, flick flywheel. Stand back a bit because it will prime for a bit (squirt hot water from the exhaust hole). Once the excess has been squirted out it she should run well.

some of the modern illogical sizes for things were logical at the time. Im making a guess the boiler fills 141.5 ml as thats 5 floz

This engine dates from c1972-75. Don't know where you get your dates from. :0

I fired mine up today for the first time, looking at the patina prob in many years and she's a goer although the filling of the boiler is a little bit pain in the piston, well chuffed and that lovely smell of burning meths and steam mixed with oil just was one of them manly moments hehe

I measured the amount of water in the boiler using the rest on burner fill procedure as a start point, found that they primed like a dog marking its territory, then reduced the amount of water by 10ml, then ran the engine again, checking the amount of water left in the boiler after a run. I think I got the water level to start with down to 135ml, which stopped the priming and gave a good run, but with plenty left in the boiler, but I'm working from memory, so don't take that as gospel.

you using a rubber `O` ring???
@PLAYINGAROUND10 жыл бұрын
Yes. The only fibre washers I've found are of poor quality, so I usually use "O" rings.

I have a wobbly chimney on mine! Dont know the best way to fix it!
@PLAYINGAROUND4 жыл бұрын
Never done one myself, but it would need drilling out and a new rivet fitting. You will need to get the endcap off the boiler to remove the remains of the old one. As long as the river doesn't leak, leave it.

@@PLAYINGAROUND Thanks! I think I'll do that. I was thinking if soft solderinf around the base to se if that steadies it a bit..
